Vienna Teng - Passage Lyrics

I died in a car crash two days ago
Was unrecognizable
When they pulled me from the gears
No one's fault, no one's bottle
No one's teenage pride or throttle
Our innocence is all the worse for fears
The other walked away alive
Arms wrapped now around his wife

My lover sits, the silent eye
In a hurricane of warmth and word
My mother trembles with the sobs
Whose absence seems absurd
My sister shouts to let her see
Through the cloud of crowd surrounding me
My colleagues call for silence in my name

I died in a car crash three months ago
They burned me until I glowed
And crumbled to a fine gray sand
Now I am nothing, everywhere
Several breaths of strangers' air
And all thoughts ever written in my hand
They plant my tree out in the yard
It grows but takes the winter hard

My lover holds a knife to wrist
Says tomorrow comes, hold on a while
My mother tosses in the sheets
And dreams me holding my own child
My sister plays our homemade tapes
Laughs as tears run down her face
My office door now wears a different name

I died in a car crash four years ago
My tree drinks melted snow
Just eight feet tall a pale and fragile thing
Bee stings beaches bright vacations
Sunburnt high-school graduations
A sparrow healing from a broken wing
This year a glimpse of second chances
Tiny apples on my tree's branches

My lover hears the open wind
And crawls blinking into the sun
My mother leafs through photographs
And thinks "yes she was a lovely one"
My sister can't decide her truth
Asks aloud what I might do
In a conference hall my brief efforts engraved

I died in a car crash
A lifetime ago it seems
Been a decade or two or three
They've just release a new design
Bars and bags front and behind
My fate now an impossibility
Safely packaged hurtling down
The highway hardly make a sound

My lover very much alive
Arms wrapped now around his wife

  21. E.... M....

This song gives me the deepest chills.

  22. A.... H....

This song chills me to the bone because it has a beautiful yet chilling ambiance. The lyrics are those of a reminiscent ghost reflecting upon what she observes over the course of the time she's been dead.

  23. L.... B....

I don't know if you'll ever see this. This song has been a part of my life for the last 5 years. I sing it, and it means so much to me. sometimes it means more to the people who listen. Thank you for your work. it is beautiful and strong. Much love. <3

    L.... B....

    awe very sweet!

  24. K.... C....

  29. R.... G....

I listened to this song whenever I miss my lovely brother who died in a car crash...I burst into tears every time listening to this music and imagining how much he was in pain in the last hours...I miss him every single day....People keep saying time heals this pain, they just don't know this is getting more real...You miss the person and can't do anything but remembering the memories...

    R.... G....

+Roxanna Gholami I felt sad to read your words. This song has amazing lyrics but I think that in your situation they could just serve to reinforce the sadness. I would think it best to find a joyful, uptempo song - maybe one that your brother liked - and use that as something to listen to in his memory instead. When loved ones leave us, I think that it is best in the mind to celebrate their life and not dwell on their death.

  30. E.... B....

me aunt died in a crash 8 months after my mom was kill

    E.... B....

    She's in heaven singing

    E.... B....

  32. L.... ....

My brother Hunter died from a truck falling on his car when he was in it they say it was 10 weeks before he was found I miss u Hunter he was only 19 when he pasted away 😭 I am going to cut my self I hope u all have a good life I want to be with my brother

    L.... ....

What do you mean cut yourself?? Look after your self; you are a previous being; harming your self will only bring sorrow to you and your family.
    Take care precious girl.

    L.... ....

    Paris amour ok thank u

    L.... ....

thats suicide please dont do take care

    L.... ....

+LPSChloeGirl I'm sorry you lost your brother, sweetheart. But if your brother loved you, and I'm sure he did, he wouldn't have wanted you to hurt yourself, even if you may feel it's the only way to express or escape the pain on the inside - which I know can feel impossible, sometimes. I lost my mother when I was just 16, she was my best friend, and I tried to kill myself twice in the 3 years after that -- but it didn't help, it really didn't. Not in the long term. I know this post was a year ago, so I hope that you're still with us. Ask for help, please. It takes a lot of shaking off one's pride to do it, but you're likely to find that more people care about your well-being than you can probably imagine right now. I promise.

  33. E.... F....

    wow awesome song and amazing

  34. p.... a....

I miss u fay u died in car crash 😘😭😤😔😭😭

    p.... a....

+SBcookieswirl I'm so sorry for your lost

Thank you hats means a lot to me

+DorkDiariesFan You really shouldn't pile verbal abuse on vulnerable people like that. "Psycho" is such an ignorant pejorative. For a start, it's ableist, and cruel. Do you even know what psychosis *is*? I do, first-hand. You shouldn't use a word you don't fully understand, especially not as an insult. Also, cutting doesn't necessarily mean someone's suicidal or that they would attempt suicide. A lot of the time it's a release valve to take someone's mind *off* the idea of doing that, because it expresses mental pain in a physical way, even if it's not the healthiest method.

You need to stop talking about stuff you don't understand in such an ignorant way - go away and educate yourself before you make casual comments like this. They're not fair at all, and they're certainly not kind or helpful. Learn some compassion for your fellow human beings, for goodness' sake. Given the rate of mental illness in the general population, you might struggle with depression or anxiety yourself someday. Be kind.

  35. K.... S....

    😭😭😭😭😭😢😢

  36. M.... B....

    amazing

  37. 1.... b....

This song is so beautiful and sad it feels like a knife going through me.

  38. S.... P....

    SO GOOD

  39. M.... K....

This made me have some full body reaction, I had goosebumps and was shivering and my eyes stung with tears. I definitely took it to mean she watched over as her 'lover' and her sister got married to each other in the end, at first neither could get over her death but in the end they turned to each other and decades on they'd moved on with their lives.
It's heartbreaking because even these very brief lyrics do show the loved ones behaving typically over her death, eg her sister questioning aloud whether it would be ok for her to be with the victim's ex boyfriend - 4 years later - but it struck me a lot to realise that things like that do happen... Any one of us could die tomorrow and at first our family, friends, spouses would be in pieces, but 4 years later... A decade later... 2, 3 decades later... We'd be ancient history, an occasional anecdote after a few drinks, a vague topic people avoid so as not to upset our remaining relatives... 'My daughter who I lost years ago, oh she was lovely...' 'My sister passed away when I was young; oh no, it's ok, I don't really remember her...'

  40. C.... C....

    This is charles is dauter

  41. C.... C....

You are cool can't wait to here more🌞⛄️❄️😎☀️🌕

  42. C.... C....

Make it long I will dance to it

  43. M.... ....

to me, this song is a like a more mature version of when she loved me from toy story 2, like when she loved me grew up and became passage

  44. e.... ....

Omg if my family read my diary they would hate me forever

  45. K.... A....

Wow. I accidentally opened the video in a second window, 1:15 after the the first window began playing. It created the most eerie, haunting, beautiful duet.

  46. M.... S....

Whenever I feel sad and need to cry, I come here. It works every time.

  47. M.... ....

really gives a new meaning after totaling your car. I could have died, and I only got a scratch.

  48. J.... M....

    Put me in tears

  49. p.... e....

Does anyone find it weird that there is a car ad rite before this????

  50. G.... J....

I played this in the car with my friends. Everyone loved it, but no one felt like talking anymore afterwards.

  51. F.... ....

I'm pretty sure "the other" simply refers to the owner of the other car in the crash. She was the only one who died, so the "other" driver was free to go on with life and his wife.

  52. L.... ....

Is that with sarcasm or no?

  53. R.... M....

    underrated post ^^^

  54. A.... ....

I think that the woman was with her lover in the car, not with her husband (she says 'the OTHER walked away alive arms wrapped now around his wife').

    A.... ....

late reply, but I always took the meaning as the other being a stranger in another car that collided with the woman's.

  55. K.... ....

You seriously just blew my mind. I'm just always going to listen to this song like that. Thank you.

  56. L.... ....

    1. Restart the song.
    2. Google search "rainy mood" and select the first option.
    3. Enjoy!

  57. g.... d....

This is the most terrifying and the saddest song i've ever heard... really...

  58. T.... M....

    Tf ? Kay..

  59. E.... M....

I don't think the lover killed himself because yeah he did cut but he decided to hold on and push through the pain, "tomorrow comes, hold on a while". I think the song is about how even though people die, we are eventually forgotten and life keeps going on, new things are invented and the world doesn't stop for you. Your family and friends move on and although they don't forget, you are eventually just a memory.

  60. R.... K....

so emotional..love it absolutelly...beautiful...someone is chopping an onion here...i don´t cry normally so much:)

  61. s.... h....

This is a great song sung by a great songstress. It operates on more than the superficial level of sadness, becoming a compelling observation of both the permanence and impermanence of life and death. In due course Vienna may rank with Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez as a woman of huge stature. Bravo...

  62. N.... ....

oh god you just made the song worse

  63. T.... B....

I disagree with the second one. I mean, each has their own interpretation, I'm not saying yours is wrong. In the song, she dies young, she had a lot to be experienced yet, but it's all gone because of a sudden accident. It shows how fragile life is. But I think the sad thing about this song is realizing how little we are, forgettable. Even though her loved ones mourned over her death, they eventually moved on with their lives and she became nothing but a vague memory.

  64. M.... G....

He doesn't commit suicide, he gets re-married :) he was suicidal (cutting and stuff) but he moved on

  65. U.... ....

Stupid me having to ask this, But in the end, does the lover commit suicide, or doesnt he, and then is married? XD

  66. L.... W....

I know it's probably inappropriate to laugh, but the commercial before the video was for Allstate and I've been laughing for 35 years

  67. L.... T....

Wow, I didn't even think of it that way. I really like the second way.

  68. L.... T....

I can't believe how sad this song is. I've never heard a song so sad.

  69. m.... ....

    This is so depressing!!

  70. T.... C....

The first time I heard this I cryed :( that's when I had to dance to it -_-)

  71. E.... D....

im dancing to this song with my sister!

  72. K.... K....

    The beauty of Vienna Teng.

  73. K.... E....

i love dancing to this song!

  74. K.... V....

One could take this song two ways. The first way being the husband moved on, and is now married to another woman, hence the 'Arms wrapped now around his wife'. The second way is a bit more complicated. The husband cannot take it, and so he commits suicide in all his pain. The phrase 'Very much alive' could mean A; He is living, or B; he is joyful. When comitting suicide, he is joyful to be reunited with his wife. 'Arms wrapped now around his wife' could mean they are both in the afterlife now.

    K.... V....

+Kankri "The other" isn't her lover, it's the other driver from the crash. Different person entirely... Your interpretation is interesting, though.

  75. Q.... L....

I love your idea :) the feelings of seeing all the future, like that, right before you're dead is such an unbearable thing

  76. M.... ....

Cannot change, hauntingly transfixing... Again proof of the beauty of the human voice.... Again proof of the sadness of the human voice....

  77. E.... H....

As much as this song doesn't affect me, I find it to be one of the most beautiful and meaningful songs that you will ever find unlike some songs these days. It is so ah-mazing and deserves credit because you won't find another song like this. <3 <3

  78. K.... S....

Fucking depressing. go listen to some suicide silence. that will give u more joy than this

    K.... S....

Are you really that ignorant? It's not supposed to be a joyful song.

  79. J.... L....

    Beautifully haunting.

  80. H.... T....

    /watch?v=t5axCuytp9U

  81. j.... ....

    This line really affects me:
Now I am nothing everywhere - several breaths of strangers' air.

    It's hauntingly beautiful.

  82. T.... C....

    Beautiful song :) so sad

  83. L.... P....

    it it beautiful

  84. M.... C....

    lmfao anyone else?

  85. d.... f....

I Love This Song. The First Time I Heard It I Started To Cry . This Song Is Meaningful Because She's Seeing Everything Happen At One TIme.

  86. p.... p....

    It is very depressing

  87. M.... L....

    love this song its beautiful:)

  88. S.... ....

To me this is about how everything happens at the same time. Now she's dead she can see it. How her mother is grief stricken, how her sister cries at the videos and how her lover has a new woman in his life. She already knows what will happen when she dies. How overwhelming this feeling must be! Teng packs it into such sweet, soft sounds that the impact is even harder...

  89. R.... H....

It's a great song. but its kinda disturbing

  90. C.... ....

This song has just memorized me. It's beautiful, sad, and haunting. I can't help but love it.

  91. R.... W....

    This song gives me chills....

  92. V.... ....

Saddest Song I´ve ever heard D:

  93. r.... ....

this song is about an acid trip.

  94. S.... A....

i find this difficult to masturbate to.

  95. K.... R....

    the creeps ...

  96. s.... ....

    Wow... just wow.

It's very rare for a music video to bring me to tears, and even rarer for a song alone. Yet this one managed to do it.

  97. B.... B....

wait....they cremated her...i just got tthat

  98. M.... ....

this is the next song in my favourites list, after "every snowflake is different" form MCR, quite a difference XD

  99. a.... ....

    can't stop listening!

  100. a.... ....

@shinnako95 you are wonderful for this
