Vienna Teng - City Hall Lyrics

Me and my baby on a february holiday
'cause we got the news
Yeah, we got the news
500 miles and we're gonna make it all the way
We've got nothing to lose
We've got nothing to lose

It's been 10 years waiting
But it's better late than the never
We've been told before
We can't wait one minute more

Oh, me and my baby driving down
To a hilly seaside town in the rainfall
Oh, me and my baby stand in line
You've never seen a sight so fine
As the love that's gonna shine
At city hall

Me and my baby've been through
A lot of good and bad
Learned to kiss the sky
Made our momma's cry
I've seen a lot of friends
After giving it all they had
Lay down and die
Lay down and die

10 years into it
Here's our window
At the vegas drive-thru chapel
It ain't too much
For 'em all to handle

Oh, me and my baby driving down
To a hilly seaside town in the rainfall
Oh, me and my baby stand in line
You've never seen a sight so fine
As the love that's gonna shine
At city hall

Outside, they're handing out
Donuts and pizza pies
For the folks in pairs in the folding chairs
My baby's lookin' so damned pretty
With those anxious eyes
Rain-speckled hair
And my ring to wear

10 years waiting for this moment of fate
When we say the words and sign our names
If they take it away again someday
This beautiful thing won't change

Oh, me and my baby driving down
To a hilly seaside town in the rainfall
Oh, me and my baby stand in line
You've never seen a sight so fine
As the love that's gonna shine

Oh, me and my baby driving down
To a hilly seaside town in the rainfall
Oh, me and my baby stand in line
You've never seen a sight so fine
As the love that's gonna shine
At city hall

Vienna Teng City Hall Comments
  1. Y.... ....

Honestly though this is such an earnest account of a historical event from a personal perspective and that's really neat. Idk if Vienna is an ally or part of the community herself but either way she really said rights

  2. C.... D....

    Congratulations Vienna and Jacob

  3. R.... K....

Does anybody know how I could get a hold of the singer songwriter to see if I could use this video as an exercise video very slow exercise for people who are in abusive relationships? It is very short time out, take care of yourself video.

  4. W.... Y....

The Girl of Taipei bring me here.

    W.... Y....

    Me,too.

  5. l.... a....

the first song by Vienna teng i ever listened to was lullaby for a stormy night which in turn then had my listen to the other's such as blue caravan and harbor and gravity and level up etc...Vienna is almost like wanting qu in some way

  6. R.... P....

    love it

  7. R.... P....

    love it

  8. P.... ....

Homophobes should really stop commenting on this video.

    P.... ....

homophobes should really just stop breathing

  9. T.... ....

    Fitting song today

  10. P.... ....

Yeah, let's all be forced to celebrate man on man sex!

    P.... ....

No one's forcing you to celebrate anything. Several people, however, would likely prefer that you stop voicing your anti-LGBTQ+ opinions in venues where such opinions were not asked for.

Seriously, how do you think that people listening to a love song about a same-sex couple affects you? You are free to leave if you don't like the music, no one will track you down and force you to celebrate it, I promise.

    P.... ....

You took a song about love and grabbed it and made it about sex. Perhaps that was what was on your mind. Not the minds of the people in the song.

  11. L.... ....

Wow... Though my moral opinion opposes the practice of homosexuality, as I listened to the song more and more, I smiled, despite myself.  The messages in Vienna Teng's songs have this unspeakable power to refocus the listener on what is truly important, and it is often simple.  It's LOVE.  Really, it's a beautiful thing, and it's love.  Is love such a bad thing?

    L.... ....

moral opinion? do you mean self righteous heterosexual lifestyle?

    L.... ....

That's why she done and wrote it.

    L.... ....

That's what the writer of Hamilton meant. He accepted a Tony Award the night of the massacre at the GLBT Plus Nightclub. He said, "Love is love, is love."

    L.... ....

I'm glad her music could change your mind. Love is never a bad thing, and even the worst people can be made better through it

  12. e.... ....

    Nice squat.

  13. I.... ....

Good song...but how people couldn't infer this is about same sex marriage is beyond me... The lyrics are pretty clear...

    I.... ....

+IntegrityFilmsProd It's pretty clear that the lyrics are about same sex marriage, "hilly seaside town" (San Francisco), "my baby's eyes" (a description of a woman, sung by a woman), though my favorite is, "if they take it away again some day", and when did straight people ever worry about losing their right to marry? Or indeed, any of their rights?

    I.... ....

+Christopher Dean "Or indeed, any of their rights?" Your comment was spot on until that bit. You forgot that straight women, straight people of color, straight religious minorities, etc. etc. exist? Many groups of straight people have definitely had to worry about their rights. Their reasons for worrying, though, weren't because they were straight, so that's accurate.

    I.... ....

"It's 10 years late but better than the never we had heard before."

  14. U.... ....

Me too. I've loved this song since the first time I heard it. BTW, there are several dozen Vienna Teng concerts in the Live Music Archive at archive.org.

  15. E.... G....

Listening to this song to celebrate the court decision about DOMA. It's a good day for human rights.

  16. A.... ....

there is, in the back of my brain, a list of songs I am incapable of singing all the way to the end, because my throat closes up and my eyes water, and the notes escape me. This song is on it. (along with Goodbye Love from Rent, and a few others)

    A.... ....

I'm pretty young, I can vaguely remember hearing about gay marriage being legalized but I can't really remember it being legal. and listening to this song.. I'm feeling very aware that there are rights I have that I've always know and can't imagine not having that.. people have fought and died for my right to be able to marry the person I want to. it's a heavy thing to realize

  17. T.... ....

Lovely song with a great meaning! No one has the right to tell a person who they can or can't love.

  18. m.... ....

At the moment I am so incredibly glad that gay marriage is legal in the Netherlands. I'd love to marry my future wife someday; that'll be a beautiful day. (Hope you'll all vote for Obama with equal rights (at least for Americans) there!)

  19. k.... ....

This is a beautiful song about a beautiful topic, and I hope that we, a race that champions equality, can heed its message.

  20. l.... ....

It is a most lovely song regardless of political intent. It is just so very beautiful!! Thanks for posting.

  21. f.... ....

Have you read "The God Delusion"?

  22. j.... ....

This song would be just as emotionally moving if it was about marrying a chainsaw, but it wouldn't change the fact that marrying a chainsaw would be just about as valid.

    j.... ....

i know that u're trying to be funny, but it really wouldnt be as moving
context is often half the meaning. the juxtaposition of her marrying a chainsaw with how genuine and moving the song sounds would bring this into the realm of the farcical - it would be comedic. i'd be moved to tears ... from laughing

i'm not gonna address ur other point for the same reason i dont argue with terrorist-supporting imams. ur convictions are such bullshit that they dont deserve the dignity of being addressed

  23. c.... ....

God called all gay born people to celibacy. I follow his call do you?

    c.... ....

Oh honey. Be happy. Love the person you want to love.

    c.... ....

why is ur god such a sadist?
@Randi Kreger if the guy is denying so many other people their happiness, then what right does he have to his own?

    c.... ....

I hope in the meantime since this post you've moved on to troll elsewhere or perhaps question why you chose to listen in the first place. Just come out! The waters fine!

  24. D.... ....

You'd best keep listening to this song then. ;)

  25. f.... k....

great tune, and wonderful artistry, BUT, marriage is one man and one woman....the rest is something else entirely

    f.... k....

    Love is the same.

    f.... k....

marriage is defined as whatever the society believes it to be. to some societies, its one man and many women. in others, the reverse

this is because the most important aspect of marriage is as an economic union, sanctioned by the state because the institution of marriage is believed to provide some social benefit - and thats always been the formation of children

but, u say, the gays cant do that - they have to adopt. so how does a state-sanctioned homosexual union provide social benefit?

remember, i said FORMATION, not creation. just conceiving and birthing children? that's, like, 5% of the process. the rest is in the raising, and psych studies have found that the end-product of 2 homo parents (the child) is nearly always identical to the equivalent end-product of 2 hetero parents, thus, the fact that the a gay union cant procreate is not an issue

plus, the US has enough kids rotting away in foster care. i say more adoptions are a good thing, and more gay marriage = more adoption, so yes, the legalization of it has many good things going on for it

    f.... k....

    Go copulate with yourself, Frank.

    f.... k....

    FRANK ...GO FUCK YOURSELF

  26. o.... ....

Wow, are you deliberately obtuse or do you just not know how to read? Vienna has mentioned HERSELF at concerts that people don't realize her intent behind this song. Politicize that all you want.

  27. E.... M....

ah, it always brings tears to my eyes. beautiful song.

  28. L.... ....

I dream of someday being able to marry my beautiful girl... and dancing to this with her at our wedding. :')

  29. o.... ....

@quitreadingmyblog the POINT of this song is NOT the politics of the subject. THAT'S why it flies over the radar of so many conservatives (at least in Vienna's own experience performing this song). She NEVER explicitly mentions gays specifically, which is why she says that many of her listeners are shocked when she explains the back-story to them. In fact, in the concert I went to, she deliberately kept the introduction to this song very vague.

  30. F.... ....

@Cyberia24 I guess for a lot of people, the subject of gay marriage is inherently political.

  31. S.... S....

This song is so sweet. I listen to it at least once every day. I'm in love with it. And I am waiting for the girl I know I love to realize things. Perhaps we could end up like this... If Utah pulls its head out of its ass and realizes the LGBT is not bad.

  32. W.... L....

    This song is gorgeous. -3

  33. K.... B....

i love how her voice sounds just as beautiful live

  34. w.... ....

Beautiful! Marriage is about LOVE, not gender! We ALL have the right to marry the person we LOVE!

  35. C.... ....

@gurlsingerfan "every loves a love song" - that's the point. A lot of people talk to Vienna about the meaning and they're like - I didn't know that it was about gay marriage! I just thought it was a love song! - as though those two things were so different from each other...

  36. g.... ....

I once sent this song to a friend of mine, VERY conservative, and he loved it! He was stunned by the pure warmth of Vienna's voice so soulful he said, and the so pretty love song aspect of the song....but, uh...I don't think he knew it was a same gender love song ;-)...I wasn't about to tell him....why mess it up, everybody loves a love song <3

  37. h.... ....

i've never heard anything more angelic.....than vienna teng's songs

  38. f.... ....

I cried a little. I'm a guy. Guys are not supposed to cry, right? A purely beautiful song. That's all I can say.

    f.... ....

Guys cry all the time. My work has to do with therapy. Spread the word.

  39. k.... ....

Perfect. Thank you so much. I just hope that someday I can see my best friend marry the girl of her dreams. Love knows no gender.

  40. C.... ....

This actually brought a tear to my eye. Someday we'll all be allowed to marry the one we love.

    C.... ....

    Like today!

  41. M.... P....

Heard this song at a wedding it's beautiful

  42. X.... ....

    Love this song.
