Funny now I think back on it - and I dunno why - bizzarely enough, this reminds me of a mad road-trip I did with my 24yo son last year to Whitley Bay for the day from our home town (a few hundred miles round trip at least). On the release of "Urban Hymns" in 1997 the Verve were recognised as an extremely talented and promised band.

Ever since, they've continued making great music, but although they fulfilled the promise they somehow never made their way to the Hall of Fame of pop music. This obviously wasn't due to any lack of quality in their music.

So: what went wrong for Richard Ashcroft and his mates?
