Veruca Salt - Wolf Lyrics

That was a time for falling;
I knew you well.
There was no time
for calling me when you fell.
This is a time to take cover
in a wishing well.
Summer was blowing
all over me when you fell.
Sailors can take all the breathing
out of the sail.
I took a trip when you needed me.
When you fell,
waters were driving me to a deep place
I closed my eyes to see your sweet face,
a Coke can beside me
I slept in hell.
Angels can be so deceiving
when they love you well.
Did you think you would be leaving me?
These are some lavender flowers
in a broken shell
(I know it's broken..)
They comfort me ever since
the day when you fell.
When you fell,
waters were dancing
in a dark place; I closed my eyes
to see your determined face.
My secret inside me,
I slept in hell.
This is a time for believing
in fairy tales.
One in which you are brought back to me.
Wolf,... I cried wolf. [x3]

Best song written for a dead cat ever!

At least as good as Tokis'.

  3. S.... C....

Listenin to 90s music hurts so much 😭

  4. R.... C....

"in a dark place, I closed my eyes to see" (beautiful)

  5. B.... ....

    Most beautiful song ever

  6. D.... D....

I know this song is about Nina losing her cat Wolf.
I listen and personalize this song and think of a dear person I lost to drug use.
I feel that guilt of not being there for him when he "fell". I did not see it coming . I miss him every day, especially when listening to music as we both shared a love for it. Especially guitar driven rock.
I guess this song's beauty and that of Veruca Salt's music in general is often you have sensitive lyrics sang so beautifully and harmonious with such heavy guitar.
All of us take songs and find messages and memories and that's a pleasure in life.
    I miss you pal.

The way it just starts and completely takes me for a while...ooh...and that gut wrenching ending....

  10. J.... M....

this song is so alice in chains-ish
i think its because of the vocals and the powerfull guitar riffs

My girls. Oh I loved them. Still one of the best albums I have EVER heard from start to finish. They were highly underrated. I actually dig that about them now, but back when I was obsessed with this album, I wanted more for them. People were clueless. It was like no one ever bothered to explore further than "Seether" (which I refused to listen to on principle ha!) They truly had no idea what they were missing. And this song? Wow. The way they harmonize - Soft/sexy and sweet, yet so so powerful. Raw, gritty guitars. God they were good. I miss these days. Windows down, this all the way up. "25" is another one I love. That one was my anthem! Thanks for uploading this. You have good taste in music 😉

I feel the same, I will be 37 this month and had this album from when I was 14, still love it from start to finish. This song, 25, and Spiderman 79 were my favorites.

What I love about Wolf is how it just builds and builds. It relies on the vocal harmony to do this...the guitar part is actually pretty simple, but the vocal harmony is complex and gorgeous.

I am an old dude at 51 yo and my formative years were full of metal but I welcomed grunge and the 90s.
When I heard these ladies I immediately got the CD and wore it out. The harmony and heavy guitar was mesmerizing. I also am drawn to the sensitive female lyrics that you don't get from guy bands. Quite a mix with heavy and beauty and sweetness.
I agree with your take as I wanted the world to hear the album not just MTV video or radio play of Seether.
These ladies and this album are still in my top ten and would be chosen for desert island music if playing the old stranded and could only have a couple of CDs.

    A.... E....

@Barb Patch I love how selfless Nina and Louise were to each other on this album. The songs Nina wrote tended to feature more guitar solos for Louise, such as Forsythia, Get Back, Number One Blind and 25 in particular, whereas Louise songs like Wolf, All Hail Me, and Celebrate You focused on more complex vocal harmony parts for Nina.

    I love them too!!

  13. W.... D....

    YES!!!!!!

  14. I.... D....

I know I'm gonna sound like an art emo for saying this, but this what I love about this song: While it was written about the singer's cat falling out of a window, I listened to it and formulated a meaning of my own. It's just so beautiful. Music like this makes life even more colorful. That and the melody and harmonizing vocals are pure magic.

Part of the wonder of 90's rock music is the fact that the lyrics are so vague and poetic that you can create your own meaning from it. Veruca Salt helped build my imagination. I came for "Seether," I stayed for even more magic that this band created.

    I.... D....

Goddam it. I hate when I hear a cool song then find out it's about something silly like a pet dying. I mean, I like animals fine, but if I'm listening to The Wall I don't want to hear about how Roger Waters gerbil got sick.

    thank you....

  18. A.... C....

The crunchy guitars, power riffs, and two-part harmonies in this song are just epic.  Best song I have ever heard...about a dead cat, that is.  This was an awesome album.  If you don't own "American Thighs" go get it.

    A.... C....

got American Thighs and Eight arms to hold both are the best alternative rock album imo

    A.... C....

    Agreed.

    A.... C....

Thanks. I was having a great argument with myself if this was from Blow it out your ass or American Thighs.

  19. C.... H....

hey blowthingsup - I have no real reason to doubt you but where did you get that info? A biography I missed? If so - that really sucks... I love the sound and pace of this song - would suck if it was based on her kitty dying - but life is life. Please advise.

    C.... H....

She's talked about it publicly. Most recently in their Skype show in December.

  20. M.... ....

Nina Gordon and Louise Post are amazing. End of statement.

  21. L.... ....

'This song is about Louise's cat Wolfgang who fell out of her apartment window. While he was in the vet hospital she went out on a boat trip with her then boyfriend. She got seasick and took some Dramamine and it made her go to sleep. She dreamt about Wolf, hoping he would be ok. He ended up not making it.'

  22. K.... ....

My god... this was almost 20 years ago. Life is too short...

  23. j.... ....

  32. P.... ....

I love singing the harmonies to this song while playing it loudly on my speakers, then trying to sing the harmonies louder than my speakers. I like to do that with the whole album, actually. "American Thighs" was one of my favorite albums from the 90's. Absolutely amazing, stunningly beautiful album. ^_^

    P.... ....

    PixieGiggles33 same!!

    P.... ....

PixieGiggles33 I fronted a band and did backups for other local bands in the 90s. My best friend also sang. We would blast this, with me on highs and her on lows. How about "25"! Oh man, that was my anthem. They were so damned good. So so good.
