It's absolutely both. There's no contradiction here. Different styles can overlap and bleed into each other. More to the point, this is from an era before the extreme metal subgenres were really defined. In 1982, there weren't these clear lines between "black metal," "thrash," "death metal," and whatever else that we have today. Those genres have had 30+ years to grow in their own directions and establish a distinctive sound for themselves. That wasn't the case when Venom were recording their classic albums. We lumped all these old bands into different subgenres and movements LATER, in hindsight. "Black metal" wasn't a thing when Venom were recording this album -- there was just fast, ugly, Satanic metal, and then at some point we decided that a certain kind of fast, ugly, Satanic metal would be called "black metal" while other kinds of fast, ugly, Satanic metal got called "thrash" or "death metal" or whatever.

Venom were the original extreme metal band. And everything else, thrash, black, and death, were influenced by them.
