Vega, Suzanne - Soap And Water Lyrics
Soap and water
take the day from my hand
scrub the salt from my stinging skin
slip me loose of this wedding band
hang my heart on the line
scour it down in a wind of sand
bleach it clean to a vinegar shine
Daddy's a dark riddle
Mama's a headful of bees
you are my little kite
carried away in the wayward breeze
Soap and water
straighten all that we trampled and tore
heal the cut we call husband and wife
Daddy's a dark riddle
Mama's a handful of thorns
you are my little kite
caught up again in the household storms
Daddy's a dark riddle
Mama's a headful of bees
you are my little kite
carried away in the wayward breeze

Vega, Suzanne Soap And Water Comments
I was in India, where, at the time, you could buy the newest albums on casette for about $1.20, and I saw this one--I was a great admirer of Vega, but disappointed with the funky road she took with her 2 previous albums; it was an unnecessary distraction from her brilliant lyrics and simple straightforward vocals. So what a nice surprise when I put this on and heard that haunting voice with a simple arrangement again.....and I thought "Yay! We got her back!"

Well written song. Lyrically heart breaking!!
Beautiful poetry put to music as only Suzanne can
Adored her music since her debut and much to love in her catalogue
Very cool lyric video
heal the cut
when I used to make minimum wage at a coffeeshop, this would be the first song on the mix cd I'd play after closing the doors and spend almost an hour cleaning the place
xD that one dirty mofo.
Amazing artist, so creative, her music touches so many people. I am inspired by her. She came from such humble beginnings.
What can one say lol ..... great track x
Voice of an angel. Her lyrics are eternal stories.
How to make a gem with sadness ,sorrows and bitterness .Short and great song ,as Suzanne Vega is able to write since long time now . Thanx for the video with lyrics , it allows to better appreciate her poetry when your english is quite bad :-)
This song typifies the wonderful poetic melodic music that Suzanne excels really well
at. I love this cd.
i DO i DO - !
you are my little kite, carried away in the wayward breeze...................
This beautiful song reminds me of my teens. My friends used to laugh at me when they realized what kind of music I listened to: they said it was too boring. Now, I can say this lyrics are pure poetry, and this music is extremely gorgeous.
Same here; even though I talk about her to my friends, I don't think they are bothered that much. And also this song reminds me of my troubled childhood when my parents argued and I was so confused and scared - I was five then.
Same sad story! I also had a troubled family when I was little. I wish there were more artists like Suzanne; she's just amazing. It's great to find somebody here who shares my same taste in music. Greetings!
Musical poetry and brilliance it is. This is one of the best songs on one of the best albums by one of the best musicians out there. Maybe, just maybe, you ought to change friends… :-)
It is indeed frustrating when friends just don't appreciate the same artists and music as oneself. I find that many people are reluctant to listen to anything different and prefer to stick with what they are familiar with. In my opinion, certain artists who write intelligent songs (especially if performed acoustically), really need to be listened to properly, more than once. It is no use reading, talking or just half listening. Female singer- songwriters like Suzanne Vega, Natalie Merchant, Rhiannon Giddens and the late Sandy Denny are among my favourite artists, but their songs are not instantly accessible. If you take the time to listen to the lyrics, the melody and their beautiful voices, you will be rewarded with some of the most moving music ever recorded, and the beauty and quality of the songs will endure and stay with you (like a good book, as opposed to a magazine). If other people just do not get it, then that is a shame, but it is their loss in the end. A good example is Suzanne Vega's 'The Queen and the Soldier'. A song that absolutely blew me away back in 1985, and it still moves me today.
You have haunted my life. Thank You !
