Vega, Suzanne - Predictions Lyrics

Let's tell the future
Let's see how it's been done.
By numbers. By mirrors. By water.
By dots made at random on paper.

By salt. By dice.
By meal. By mice.
By dough of cakes.
By sacrificial fire.

By fountains. By fishes.
Writing in ashes.
Birds. Herbs.
Smoke from the altar.

A suspended ring or the mode of laughing
Pebbles drawn from a heap
One of these things
Will tell you something.

Let's tell the future
Let's see how it's been done.
By dreams. By the features. By letters.
By dropping hot was into water.

By nails reflecting the rays of the sun.
By waling in a circle.
By red hot iron.
By passages in books.
A balanced hatchet.

A suspended ring or the mode of laughing
Pebbles drawn from a heap
One of these things
Will tell you something.

Let's tell the future
Let's see how it's been done.
How it's been done.

By drowning, by choking, by cutting, by burning...let's tell the future? Not all of history was sweet and nice and positive. A lot of Predictions were unpleasant..

You can find the names for these means of divination here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methods_of_divination

There seem to be a number of versions of the divination by ashes, cineromancy being just one term. By meal is "alphiitomancy" (using barley, anyway) and divination by mice is myomancy.

This song has such a mystical feel. I feel myself transported to the ancient world where these things were believed to be reliable devices to explain the universe's workings.

In 1990 I was 18 , Suzanne Vega was still almost a star . I had still my hair . We could see her videos on TV , amounts of her records in all shop . I long for that time too ...

I think that after 25 most of us become too busy young adults. Same thing for me : after 25 I listened far less music than I did at 15 or 20...

  10. C.... M....

    very beatles!

  11. w.... ....

LOL and lucky you! I was ALREADY losing mine, then!! It was as thin at 18 as most guys at 40; now that I'm 39...eh, you don't wanna know...

  12. g.... ....

I was 19 at the time. I loved this song and I listened in general that of 70s rock. My tastes have varied somewhat with age. Thank you and god I still have my hair.

  13. w.... ....

I love this album and era--now. But back then, I was only 18; and while I had some good taste (had loved "Solitude Standing"), I was a butthead in many respects, and would probably be found listening to some metal crap or watching Madonna whore around rather than enjoying sublime poetry from a delicate, gentle beauty with a cool sharp mind and a heart as soft and warm as the west wind in spring. Ah, maturity... if only it didn't come with hair loss.

  14. t.... ....

this song is amazing, Suzanne Vega forever :)
