Vega, Suzanne - Marlene On The Wall Lyrics

Even if I am in love with you
All this to say, what's it to you?
Observe the blood, the rose tattoo
Of the fingerprints on me from you

Other evidence has shown
That you and I are still alone
We skirt around the danger zone
And don't talk about it later

Marlene watches from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every soldier passing

But the only soldier now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
That I am changing

Marlene on the wall

I walk to your house in the afternoon
By the butcher's shop with the sawdust strewn
"Don't give away the goods too soon"
Is what she might have told me

And I tried so hard to resist
When you held me in your handsome fist
And reminded me of the night we kissed
And of why I should be leaving

Marlene watched from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every soldier passing

But the only soldier now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
That I am changing

Marlene on the wall

Marlene watched from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every soldier passing

But the only soldier now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
That I am changing

Marlene on the wall

And even if I am in love with you
All this to say, what's it to you?
Observe the blood, the rose tattoo
Of the fingerprints on me from you

Other evidence has shown
That you and I are still alone
We skirt around the danger zone
And don't talk about it later

And I tried so hard to resist
When you held me in your handsome fist
And reminded me of the night we kissed
And of why I should be leaving

Marlene watches from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every man who's been here

But the only one here now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
That I am changing

Changing, changing, changing, changing

Marlene watched from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every soldier passing

But the only soldier now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
That I am changing

Marlene on the wall

Vega, Suzanne Marlene On The Wall Comments
  1. E.... J....

She describes her local New York district a little bit like the Beatles do with Penny Lane...very perceptive and intelligent...where have all the great songwriters gone?

  2. b.... m....

    JESUS!!! I MEAN PRIMAL PLACE

  3. b.... m....

    I MEAN pirates

  4. b.... m....

    Arrrghh spellcheck!!!

  5. b.... m....

I like how she sings from her privates

  6. M.... ....

I'm sorry, but when I think of strong women, their words and music and impact I think much more folks like Vega much more than T. Swift. Shoulders of giants

  7. p.... ....

The people saying "omg she's so underrated" about a famous and acclaimed artist are just admitting that for them the ultimate accolade is Britney Spears-like commercial success.

  8. T.... B....

Great song. The production dates it a little. 10 years before or after and it would sounded a lot better.

  9. k.... ....

...sorry I took so long to fall for you. ...breathtaking in that dress.

  10. P.... C....

    And scandalously sexy!!

  11. h.... ....

I bought this album in the spring of 1987. I was just about to graduate from high school in Schenectady N.Y. This was my favorite song. It always reminds me of that last beautiful summer with friends and being scared shitless of the future that was ahead of me. I wish I could tell my then self to be not afraid.

Loved Suzanne Vega as Teenager. So good to listen to these great songs again.

If I had known how shit the 2000's were going to be I would have stayed in the '80s

  57. P.... A....

Some rad chick turned me on to Suzanne Vega as this record was released. Have hear 1st release discs & they're still damn good.

  58. J.... C....

    This song seems from 2010.

    J.... C....

    Joaquim Coutinho I believe it's from 85

    J.... C....

That was my point, its very modern for its time

  59. C.... M....

Suzanne's for sure cuter than Marlene! Too bad she won't read this comment....

  60. s.... h....

What is Marlene? Like a painting or what?

    S.... M....

A poster of Marlene Dietrich, look her up on wikipedia, if you know neither, ask google ...

  65. b.... m....

  67. s.... h....

  68. J.... S....

    Superb! Nothing more to say!

  69. J.... S....

Agreed Horro! She's superb! Big kiss for her!

  70. F.... ....

Holy crap, apparently she is managed by Michael Hausman (drummer of the 80s band Til Tuesday). He also manages ex-bandmate Aimee Mann. Small world!

    F.... ....

I think in an interview she said she is independent now.

  71. D.... F....

Her voice is so unemotional and restrained. Suzanne is like the antipode of Kate Bush. And I love them both)

  72. S.... ....

Still my favourite song by her.

    S.... ....

    Mine too!

    S.... ....

    @Virginia Taylor FUN FACT:
when I moved to NYC from Boston, I knew Suzanne Vega lived around SoHo or Tribeca, so I woudl always look out for her as I Bike Messengered. and... ONE DAY... there she was (on the outskirts of the nabe, mostly industrial and few people) walking up the sidewalk... and I pulled up and asked "are you Suzanne Vega?" and she said "Yes" and I said "Is that your real hair color?" (it was very red) and she said "It was when I was a baby" (!!!), and I laughed (because she's funny and irresistible) and then drove away. (Had I not been sworn to celibacy, I would've tried to date her by any means necessary.) (OUCH!) (A few more words may have been exchanged but I don't recall them. My rule is to never hassle "famous" people. They deal with non-stop pests.)

  73. T.... ....

This is a great song but killed and terribly dated by the awful 80s production.

    T.... ....

I love the dated look and feel. It was the times, not the fake polished look of today.

    T.... ....

Slant Six I'm not talking about the look , I'm talking about the music production

  74. T.... ....

I'm fighting things i cannot see lalalala

  75. S.... S....

Ah the 80s, loved those days...

  76. J.... ....

It is funny that she looks at the guitar every now and then to see if the chord is ok even though this is a video and you don't need to play correctly. I guess she wanted to have a real performance feeling to the video. No offense though, this is a nice song & video and Suzanne is nice too :).

    J.... ....

    Dang, you're right. Nice analysts!

  77. M.... ....

why have I never heard this song before?

    M.... ....

Well, I've heard it now,....and I'm going to hear it lots more times.

  78. p.... h....

they don't make music like this any more

    p.... h....

I dunno, Suzanne Vega is still making awesome music!

    p.... h....

The fuck they don't??? You're just looking in the wrong places

  79. C.... d....

    EXTRAKLASSE... !

  80. M.... G....

    What can I say?

  81. k.... ....

I listened to this song, whilst driving a bus towards the Dead Sea, 1989, still a very great song.

  82. b.... ....

What's with the American Psycho looking dude?

  83. G.... L....

Such a unique and gifted talent; a vocal style seriously without compare....

  84. M.... J....

    She's no criminal
    all who know her music
    love her
    body and soul

  85. P.... ....

    Folk /Pop Rock. Honest Vega

    P.... ....

    She is brilliant.

  86. J.... K....

the first time I heard it, I was in a car... driving to my parents home while it was raining hard, I felt so lonley, it was 1985. now 2016 they played this song and again I was about on the the same spot driving to my parents and it was raining, I felt the same like I did back then, the only soldiers are we, we fight things we can not see.....

    J.... K....

First time I heard this song was driving to the Belgian Grand Prix in '85 at Spa- that day stood out for because my ears pricked up straight away when this came on the radio- and also because I found a great vantage point at Eau Rogue to get a first hand view of a young Ayrton Senna claim his second ever Grand Prix win in the JPS Lotus on a wet, misty afternoon.

...I still remember that afternoon like it was yesterday, coming home buzzing with that feeling of contentment you get after you have a day where everything just 'turns out'...

    J.... K....

I heard this back in 2003 on SNL........... I have never forgotten it.

There are days I can't remember my own name... but this song... I always remember.

  87. D.... C....

Such brilliant music :-) . Totally love it

  88. Y.... ....

This is such a beautiful song.

  89. p.... ....

that I'm taking take that off my wall the boyfriend sick of the sight of them staring when we have sex xxx

  90. e.... a....

    Marlene Dietrich.

    e.... a....

That's who I believe the "Marlene" in the song is.

  91. t.... ....

totally love that song. suzanne vega is indeed dramatically underrated.

  92. M.... C....

The guitar solo is a masterpiece study in taste and phrasing. A clean Stratocaster straight through a small amp with no effects, played with restraint, with nothing but good ideas.

    M.... C....

    I've been studying this myself!

  93. D.... K....

    What a lovely voice, she's amazing. :)

  94. J.... S....

    Jonas - go report that!

  95. c.... ....

    LOVE this song.

  96. c.... ....

    LOVE this song.

  97. S.... ....

    Masterpiece!

    S.... ....

+SKOTP69 totally  agree I believe this was inspired by  a  poster of  MARLENE DIETRICH  beautiful song and  what a beautiful woman she does  remind me of  the  actress from  THE LOVE BOAT  or  maybe  the sailor reference is playing with my mind!!   I''m glad  I stopped drinking    enjoy m8!!

    S.... ....

+Harvey Lee , I haven't confirmation on that, but I do see that, as well. The scenes with Vega dressed glamorously in black, sitting on a ledge that could easily be imagined as a piano, the way Dietrich did it back in the thirties. The mesh veil, the compact implying sophistication and glamour. It was like the underground version of Bette Davis Eyes. LOL
