Van Zandt, Townes - Willie Boy Lyrics

Hey Willy boy what you gonna do
When the wind blows cold
The moon turns blue
Build me a fire
Gonna dance and sing
A little bit of winter don't mean a thing
A little bit of winter don't mean a thing

Hey Willy when the birds arrive
The flowers bloom
While the clouds float by
Tell my puppies
And my turtles and things
All God's children need a little spring
All God's children need a little spring

Hey Willy boy where you gonna go
When the grass gets sticky
And the wind blows slow
Down to the river
Gonna jump right in
A little bit of summer can't be no sin
A little bit of summer can't be no sin

Hey Willy how you gonna feel
When the leaves turn gold
Beneath your heels
Twirl and spin never gonna fall
Falling just won't do at all
No that wouldn't do at all

Hey Willy boy how you gonna feel
Hey Willy boy where you gonna go
Hey Willy boy what you gonna do
It's time to go to sleep right now
It's time to go to sleep right now

I have two sons, both now grown. The days of their childhood were the best of my life. This song perfectly (and I mean as in cannot be improved) captures the joys of fatherhood. It even reminds me of singing lullabies to them every night. When the oldest was 18 months, he informed that he was now a big boy and didn't want me to sing him to sleep anymore. Then his little brother came along to months later and I started singing him to sleep. Wouldn't you know it, the oldest asked me to sing to him again. Kept it up until they were 3 or 4, maybe older, every night. I didn't quit until they made me. Townes Van Zandt wrote this as an entry in some lullaby contest because he needed the money. It was towards the end of his life after decades of smoking and drinking to excess had taken their toll on his voice. At least that's the story I read somewhere. No matter his motivation or the decline in his singing ability, he created something magical.
