Van Morrison - Hard Nose The Highway Lyrics

Hey kids dig the first takes
Ain't that some inspiration
When sinatra sings against Nelson Riddle Strings
Then takes a vacation

Seen some hard times
Drawn some bad lines
No time for shoeshines
Hard Nose the Highway

I was tore down at the dead's place
Shaved head at the organ
But that wasn't half as bad as it was oh no
Belfast and Boston

Put your money where your mouth is
Then we can get something going
In order to win you must be prepared to lose sometime
And leave one or two cards showing

Tried to listen to Kanye West's newest. Scurried back here in Horror. Lordbless my Soul, I promise not to touch modern "Hip-Hop" again.

Knowing only Van's commercial output (Brown Eyed Girl, Domino and a few others), which is somewhat limited, I only discovered the marvelous songs of Van only a couple of years ago (I'm 64)...I was baffled and amazed at the richness and beauty of Van Morrison music!!! A true genius.

...wow what sage words of advice that if I had a son (instead of daughters)
This would be this kernel of all I tried to teach him
It would all originate in this teaching in this song as it
    Seems that Van has been a teacher of mine in so many ways;
Books people thinking behavior Thank you
    Sir Van
    ...Yes Sir ...!

I didn't discover this album until at least 20 years after it came out. It's brilliant! With two of my favorite songs ever: Snow in San Anselmo, and Hard Nose the Highway. Van the Man.

  28. B.... S....

the album cover art is rather bizarre yet interesting. I have wondered for years what it means.

    B.... S....

I think it's Ho Chi Minh

    B.... S....

IT MEANS THAT OLD CHINA-MAN IS AS HIGH AS FUCK. LOL

    B.... S....

    Barry Smith Vietnam Era...

    B.... S....

Quite right when one considers the words of this song. Thanks for a good deduction.

  29. D.... ....

Is he really saying "hard knows the highway"?

    D.... ....

Definition of Hard-Nosed: to be stubborn, or appear tough.

    D.... ....

+Jcrass23 So face life, or the highway, with perseverance. Very clever Van.

    D.... ....

+degree7 exactly bro lol great song

looks like alot of people have lit on the 'sinatra' lines here, but for me it's all about: "In order to win / You must be able to lose sometimes / And leave one or two cards showing..."
    says it all!

    p.... ....

My favorite line in the whole song, too!

    p.... ....

pipeandslippersman yes my sentiments exactly!....that verse or stanza may be the best in any song written In my listening experience what a wonderful tune /melody / lyrics/rhythm Man Van The Belfast Man certainly got it all and he really knows how to put and mix and match it all together better than any Michelin or a Top-Class Chef.He understands exactly which ingredients to take and use them in correct proportions what to leave out which flavors to make subtle which to up front how to.Mix all these ingredients and flavors differently together at different times and places so that each time that he makes he same dish it is prepared slightly or grossly differently but always the unmistakable unique ‘signature ‘ of The Masters flavor ,pattern touch creativity is unmistakable and enjoyed making it the beautiful work of the person that one respects admires seeks and ultimately LOVES AND CANNOT DO WITHOUT THANK YOU SIR VAN FOR THE MANY YEARS OF ABSOLUTE PLEASURE KNOWLEDGE WISDOM JOY & COMPANY YOU HAVE PROVIDED AND ESPECIALLY FOR THE WONDERFUL MANNER THAT MY PALATE HAS BEEN TREATED BY YOURSELF YOUR EFFORT & WORK WITH THE VERY FINEST FOODS GROWN AND PREPARED BY THE FINEST CHEF ALIVE OH YES SIR I HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGIE OF HAVING DINED EVERY DAY ON FARE FAR SUPERIOR TO ANY SERVED TOT ROYALTY AT ANY PLACE ANY TIME ....Thank You Sir and you take extra special care always please all places.

    Truly a great album :)
But hey...i have been listening to VM for a few years now.... and i STILL cant decide which one/ones i love the most. That said, your taste is great :)

  46. W.... ....

Not sure it's my favorite, but it certainly is fantastic and very underrated.

  47. B.... E....

Along with Common One and Veedon Fleece I think it's one of his most underappreciated and overlooked albums. Even though there are one or two tracks that I will occasionally skip past I can't get enough of the title track, "Warm Love", "Wild Children" and "Wild Mountain Thyme"; timeless stuff.

  48. i.... ....

    This is his best album

  49. M.... ....

8-tracks ... yeah, I miss 'em. We seemed poorer back then, but life seemed so much more care-free.

  50. H.... E....

This is a pretty good song. Not my favorite Morrison song, but a great song nevertheless.
