Van Morrison - Foreign Window Lyrics

I saw you from a foreign window
Bearing down the sufferin' road
You were carryin' your burden
To the palace of the Lord
To the palace of the Lord

I spied you from a foreign window
When the lilacs were in bloom

And the sun shone through your window pane
To the place you kept your books
You were reading on your sofa
You were singin' every prayer
That the masters had instilled in you
Since Lord Byron loved despair
In the palace of the Lord
In the palace of the Lord

[Bridge:]
And if you get it right this time
You don't have to come back again
And if you get it right this time
There's no need to explain

I saw you from a foreign
Bearing down the sufferin' road
You were carryin' your burden
You were singing about Rimbaud
I was going down to Geneva
When the Kingdom had been found
I was giving you protection
From the loneliness of the crowd
In the palace of the Lord
In the palace of the Lord

They were giving you religion
Breaking bread and drinking wine
And you laid out on the green hills
Just like when you were a child
I saw you from a foreign window
You were trying to find your way back home
You were carrying your defects
Sleeping on a pallet on the floor
In the palace of the Lord
In the palace of the Lord
In the palace of the Lord
Etc etc...

Van’s arrangements/production on this album in particular are astonishing. Seems to me he doesn’t get enough credit for this.

    m.... ....

hes well respected by all musicians, hes wowed and wondered most of them. its just that joe public never hears boo about this. i had to look into vans music deeper to get to his best stuff. radio stations only play those 4 or 5 common songs.

  12. W.... G....

  14. S.... R....

  15. R.... M....

His Lyrics and it's content really speak to one's heart and soul while the musical arrangements lift them to a higher plain. The man ' is ,the real deal.

    R.... M....

The fact he even sings about this shit also, hes not really interested in being like everyone else, thats to be commended too

  16. 1.... ....

The female choir is pure heaven, and then there is the man with the godgiven voice.

    1.... ....

exactly not only has he all the tools, he has wonderful backup singers and musicians around him

  17. B.... G....

    M.... e....

My ex husband passed away on the 2nd June this year and he loved Van Morrison, (as I do). What a dilemma I had trying to choose from one of Vans songs. Ended up my son picked "Days like these" I really wanted "Reminds me of you". I hope wherever he is he is still listening to Van.

  25. T.... P....

    the path we tread
    from our physical selves
    to the spiritual world
    as laid before us
    beckoned by a mystic

  26. T.... P....

  27. S.... R....

    S.... R....

mm i did like brown eyed girl but cant stand moondance but both were over played on the radio as though this is all van is, i didnt think much of him until i discovered all his best songs and instrumentals that were a thousand times better, kinda like 'slegehammer' threw me off peter gabriel god i hated that stupid song but it turned out to be his worst song and yet thats all they played on the t.v and radio so stupid lol

    S.... R....

    Wayne Rennie

Perspective folks... it's all his body of work. It ain't why, it just is

  28. k.... ....

    simply majestic.

  29. k.... ....

  30. Z.... ....

I just noticed a 2-Thumb-Down up on Right Hand under VIEWS, and If I catch these two who gave this GREAT SONG a 'Thumb-Down', I will sneak behind them when they're having their Dessert Dish and pour lots of Ketchup on their Dessert. HAHAHAHAHAHA. This Album is a masterpiece of great music created by this musical genius they call VAN MORRISON, The Man, The Man.

    Z.... ....

    He is indeed The Man.

    Z.... ....

I second that ketchup ambush.. and I throw in some mayonnaise for good measure

  33. J.... D....

I tried to find this on Grooveshark. It came up with a Bob Dylan version which sounded like the mid 70's Dylan. Too much harmonica and a nervous twitchy sound to it. Nothing even close to Van's version.

    J.... D....

@Joe Durbin oh yes i know th 1,there is a docu on van done awhile ago i have th intro n where he says 'wel when i was singin it with dylan it just occurred to me that part of it could be about him'. also this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzVSyoeKkMQ&index=3&list=WL

    J.... D....

@Phillip McConnochie I played music many years ago for many years. Being 59 I have seen musicians go through changes much as we all do. Van Morrison much like Joe Cocker came into their own with a drastic change that was so much better than the music they originally were recognized for in the early days.

    J.... D....

    +Joe Durbin
Of course not. As great an artist as Bob Dylan is, he's basically a poet who sings his words, a bard, a balladeer, a skald. Van Morrison is something quite different. No one is quite like Van.

    J.... D....

i enjoy bob too he's folk/rock more, he has his own style and i like his voice too. van is alot different of course and equally amazing if not more so, vans certainly got a better voice, tho bob's voice is a big part of his act too

  34. J.... D....

This song is so good! You can almost hear an evangelist shouting "in the palace of the lord" the way Van sings this.

  35. J.... D....

I just bought this 86 LP. Sounds great! Van Morrison at his best.  People only think of him as the Gloria or Brown Eyed Girl singer are missing the soul of Van as he drips the honey laden notes for us to enjoy.

    J.... D....

    n1 LP is th best

    J.... D....

Thanks for posting all of the Van music. So many people do not appreciate his soulful music.  I have been playing guitar for about 50 years and I so enjoy playing along to his material. Great artist!

    J.... D....

    c.... ....

    Maybe not just Buddhist.

  39. C.... C....

van said songs are just songs he means its all an act yes he sings about a lot of meaning and inspiring lyrics etc.. but basically what isnt an act?(saw this in an interview) but of course u can take from it what u like(he said in a bobdylan van singing session tht this could be about bob .(i dont understand u) (Funny how, sometimes, the only way to glimpse peace is to ask yourself to wish it to that Someone else.
Good luck, hon.) wtf is hon?

  40. r.... ....
