One of the first dates I ever went on was with this woman who, while very pretty, was also quite materialistic, and also critical of what others were wearing. Tight as a duck's ass this group was at this point. That's the key missing from Van Hagar they lost the R&B and just decided to work on the pop rock side. Everybody knows tension makes great music

When I heard that Sammy was teaming up with Van Halen, I thought it was going to be the freaking greatest thing ever, because I loved VH, and I loved Sammy's solo work, and I couldn't wait...5150 was a good album, it was just not as good as I built it up in my mind...and that's why. There was no grit from either the VH side or Sammy's solo work, and I was massively disappointed. The sum of the parts just didn't add up. You summed it up great.

Always thought Roth was under-appreciated as a vocalist.

I always believed, even more so today, that Diamond Dave was the greatest front man EVER. No, I didn't say greatest voice ever. I really liked his voice too, but out front of Ed, Al and Mike...stellar. Jagger is a close second.

He had his moments. Pretty limited voice but it worked well with VH.

In the early years, absolutely. Then he glammed out and became a cheesy Las Vegas twinkie. Bad move.

IMHO his voice made a real point of difference between VH and the other incomparable shrill hair bands vainly following in early 80's...Dave's definitive tough, macho tones kept the power plus theatrics anchored.

I personally don't like when people say that Sammy Hagar doesn't compare with Dave, or when it's the other way around. Both have very different singing voices. One being uncomparable to the other in cases like these goes without saying.

Sammy Hagar had more talent than Diamond Dave by a country mile; he could sing better but also he could make the guitar talk. For a long time I thought Roth was better but that was just because that was who was with them at the start when my impression of VH was first being formed. I still like both singers, but I saw Sammy solo and he put on a hell of a show, even strutting on a catwalk above the crowd singing and strumming with a broken freaking ankle still in the cast!

I saw in a vid where Ed said straight up this was Dave and Teds album. Whats odd to me is that on one of their greatest hits albums they have most of the songs Ed hated. Dancing ...Streets, On top of the world which he said was the worst song he said he ever wrote. A few other hated songs which makes me wonder if they had any say as to what went on those hits albums. Or Ed did not want to do them even as money hungry as he is and was legally bound to so he tried to sabatage them. But who cares. I want to know why the hell Ed does not do guitar lessons or sit downs and just talk shop and show some of his style. He does in some ads but like usual he is getting paid. I know if you try to sell any guitar with stripes he has a army of lawyers ready to close the auction. I know this.

I'm confused? Are you a fan, or cynical critic, pretty sure he made little to nothing on Michael Jackson's Thriller. If your gonna attack Ed(who has plenty of problems mixed with just a dash of "musical know how") be prepared for a defence, I LOVE HIM! Jimi Page & Hendrix can state their case for "world's greatest guitarist" Don't forget some pretty descent piano/synthesizer & even bass on Sammy's solo album in between V.H. tours & albums. I am a confused fan and critic. I have been listening to EVH since 77 and have about 10 EVH guitars from Frankensteins,5150 Kramer copies to Ernie ball Music Mans from the early 90s,Peaveys and Wolfgangs from every year. Amps, a pair of striped tennis shoes and various striped gear. So yeah guess you could say I am a fan. I was 15 in 77 and played in a little band covering Aerosmith,Nugent,etc when VH1 dropped. I heard Eruption and quit guitar for a month. Huge influence musically. I just wished Ed was more open and accessible during his career.Imo after VH hit it big and Dave left, Ed threading water for the last 30 years. Its easy to tell Ed hates public appearances and has to be dragged even to major events promoting his products. But on stage in front of 20 grand he is right at home. Its just that I see Vai,Satriani,Frank Marino,Nugent,Schon,Dimartini etc on YT giving talks,demos,lessons I wished Ed was more sociable. About the only times I see him is when his is promoting the same tired
Wolfgang shape or throwing stripes on anything they put in front of him. Yes I am guilty for buying it but it has ran its course with me. I am tired of  the sos. Glad we still have him and he is still very sharp. Same love/hate with Roth. Love the guy and find him a amazingly unique personality and musician. that said if I were to get stuck on a elevator with him I would probably try to strangle him after a hour.
