Van Halen - Dirty Water Dog Lyrics
No candidate would I support
His platform could I endorse
Another accomplice slinging dirt
Campaign promises falling short
I don't belong to any race
No borderline in the sand I'd trace
I'm just a sucker for a pretty face
Uncomfortable in the realm of the political
Position's always been a little left of cynical
I'm fundamentally for the individual
Preoccupied purely with the physical
When heavy is the weight of the world
And the river runs a little too deep
Sometimes a certain tom's gotta peep
I'm a peek-a-boy, looking at girls
And I think I like, I think I like, I like what I see
I don't wanna find religion
Or another man's opinion
I Can't choose what's not my decision
When there's only one under the sun
There's no need to be denied
Chew before swallowing pride
I want to live so let me die
Oh by the way, what's your sign?
Can't comprehend the meaning of the metaphysical
I'd rather leave that to your so-called intellectual
But what I do know I know feels only natural
I'm just a red-blooded heterosexual
When heavy is the weight of the world
And the river runs a little too deep
Like a dirty water doggin' a bird
Sometimes a certain tom's he gotta peep
I'm a peek-a-boy, looking at girls
And I think I like, I think I like, I like what I see
[Guitar Solo]
When heavy is the weight of the world
And the river runs a little too deep
Like a dirty water doggin' a bird
Sometimes a certain tom's he gotta peep
I'm a peek-a-boy, looking at girls
And I think I like, like a hound dog, chasin' a bird
And I think I like
A dirty water dog
And I think I like, I think I like, I like what I see

Van Halen Dirty Water Dog Comments
Beat It slow . . .
i love VH, but this to me sounds like Dookie poo.
This sounds more like a cover band than Van Halen.
Cherone audition tape more than produced album. If this is what Van Halen has morphed to then group Poison is 10x better compared to this song / album. Cherone just sucks in the mix and drowned out and weak. Eddie overplays entire mix and bass is horrible also. They just sound horrible mixing and rookie tribute tape material.

Hate the "synth guitar" sound. EVH is way too good for that. LAZY!!
So, I looked up the definition of a
“Dirty Water Dog” and it doesn’t even come close what I perceive the meaning of the lyrics to be.
Is there someone who can give me their best unbiased, objective interpretation of what this song means??
Thanks!!
It's what they call hotdogs when you boil them in a vessel containing other hot dogs the water looks dirty.
IMHO the rhythm guitar effect is too intrusive, it has almost same timbre as Gary Cherone. Total confusion to my ears.
This and Fire In The Hole are the best songs off this album. Good job Gary Cherone, this album didn’t entirely suck.
This song is great. I was wrong to ever discredit the song on this album. This is the first time that I really listened to it closely. It is still VAN HALEN
Not a bad song, just wish it would have had Eddie’s raw tone on guitar, and a more ripping solo. Always thought the outro was pretty cool tough.

Very creative and thoughtful artistry here from everyone. A different Van Halen but still them with sophistication in there music.
Sincerely, Van Halen 3 is an 8 out of 10 - Cherone is almost there and moving upwards to his highest potential and reaching the 10 out of 10 where he needs to arrive and remain forever one of the world's best vocal singers of all time.
GARY CHERONE IS AN 8 OUT OF 10 ON VAN HALEN 3.

it's a bland hair metal album with sexist lyrics and the mix is all wrong on half the tracks. Did I mention it's 13 years out of fashion? And the picture on the front sucks? The managers sister was married to the drummer, and he managed XXTTRREEMMEE so realized brand EEXXTTRREEMMEE was washed up, they put him in the 'drivers seat' for vh3. An Compact Disc without a proper producer, or a bass player, made essentially because they hated their old band members.
I prefer Cherone to Sammy Hagar, not only because he played more songs from the Roth era (Hagar would only play the 5 most famous Roth-era songs live), but Cherone’s lyrics are pretty good.
With the phaser, flanger, and wah pedal wide open...
Ever who said on a thread i read about Ed using the same riff when full band kicks in to this, as the demo outtake they did on 5150s I Want Some Action, they were right. Nice call.
poor mike...lol
go on, finish what ya started riff
Listen to I want some action the throw away song from 5150.
I love this song
Top Song 👍
This song sounds more like traditional Van Halen than the other songs on this album. Not saying this is the only song on this album that's good, but this sounds more like the Van Halen that I'm familiar with.
Flamestar320 power to the people I totally agree with you. This song has the classic Van Halen sound.
The guitar on this song sounds like a bluesy country steelstring, not like Eddie Van Halen’s signature three-chord riffs and fast solos from the 70’s and 80’s. Also, the lyrics are more poetic and in depth than David Lee Roth’s pop lyrics and Sammy Hagar’s ballads. I would say this album deserved the mixed reviews it got. You can’t choose whether you like it or hate it, but you feel both ways about it.
The structure of this song reminds me of Top Jimmy.
Van Halen III is whipping boy for many fans but I really liked this and few songs off the album. Good song.
You can grovel if you want at their feet, but I call it for what it is = mix was crap and done by someone high or too egotistical about guitars who ruined this album. It is horrible production. Cherone sucks in the mix and sounds like an audition tape more than real music.
You are absolutely right! To be honest I was pissed when they went with Cherone over DLR and I threw this album in the trash immediately after listening to it. Bought it again 5 years later and still hated it. Finally 20 years later, I gave it another chance and this time I listened to nothing but this album for a few days , and it grew on me. So now I can appreciate the good songs. It definitely has some cringe moments, and the sound quality may be lacking on this upload, but a Hi res copy sounds fine. plus as you mentioned, some of these songs are stellar. Plus it's still Eddie Van Halen, no matter how you slice it, yeah these songs stay with you. It's nothing to do with groveling as poser anonymous Lebowski below implies. Only a complete loser goes to every song on a album and whines about how much he hates it. Ignore that guy, he just a troll with nothing better to do.
yeah, in response to a previous coment, Alex Van Halen has a clear style of drumming and according to Sammy, "is one of the loudest drummers I've seen" and on van halen's live show record and on songs like poundcake, overdrive the whole band
+Angelo Luna Alex is so underrated. Alex's drumming on As Is from A Different Kind Of Truth is outstanding!
GREAT BUT NO JOHN BONHAM OR NEIL PEART!
@Marc Domicello TURN OFF YOUR CAPS LOCK MATE
Marc Domicello neil peart is totally overrated and couldn't hold a candle to alex van halen's style & feel for groove!
just watch that poor effort of neil peart at the buddy rich tribute live show, he couldn't swing worth shit and it was a total faillure both technically as performance wise.
he's like a slightly better lars ulrich, both lack feel for groove.
should never even be mentioned in the same sentence as john bonham, the master groover!
this would be a classic if dave was singing, the music is magical
I like it as it is
I know what you mean I love it the way it is but I can see dave rockimg this out
saint7370 Garry Cherone is perfect for the song..
Really solid tunes as usual, and I've always liked what Gary Cherone brings to the table - but the mix and production on this album is nowhere near the VH standard.
I heard from many sources that the sound actually sounds better on a CASSETTE. Any truth to this you think?
* Might be - kind of funny if it's true ( attention world : this album was recorded directly to cassette ) !
+John Mclelland The same can be said for ADKOT times 10! That album is a muddy mess
I don't own the album on cassette and didn't know it was available but I have recorded songs from this album from CD to cassette and it does improve the sound quality. Hope that helps.
i agree and the arraignments are very amateurish
Edward on bass
If Ed is on base, then who's on guitar?
Charlie Benante
Dude he's Anthrax's drummer
What about the guitar solo that starts at 3:15? Who's playing the guitar then, still Benante?
man I had the biggest argument with a buddy one time about Eddie playing all the parts. plus he played all the basslines on Sammy's "where eagles fly album". the buddy freaked when I showed him the album credits. I'm like "dude Eddie plays everything!"
Oscar Thomas Michael Anthony only plays bass on three of the songs on this album. Eddie does the rest.
You're so right. This album is a total masterpiece.
"I want some action!"
I love the guitar work and chord progressions on this song. BRILLIANT!
This song is legit!
For me this is my favourite VH record!!!!
i hate the name van hager it is so disrespectful to eddie, it's he's band no matter who the singer..it's really all about the guitar..remember the first VH album and that guitar sound no one had ever heard. thats why i got it not DLR
Fuck Eddie, if he could get past his narcissism Van Halen could have been among the best bands in history, above the Eagles, Rolling Stones.....
@Mr. Alexander You're certain
I've been looking up this song on youtube every month since you uploaded it. ha. To me this song fits good with FAIR WARNING. This song is in my top 10 favorite VH songs.
Love this album. Prefer it to Van Hagar.
Taste is a funny thing....For example, some people not only manage to drink Pepsi, but claim to like it! ...[Go Figure]...Maybe the haters are Pepsi drinkers? Hey, I might be on to something...
When it actually gets into it, it starts to sound like an aerobics song... 1:10 haha
This is a great album and for those out their that disagree, well it's because you just don't understand the complexity of it!
That's EXACTLY what I have always thought too...Some of Ed's most technical playing, for sure.
Not to mention the did the opposite of what's typically done. They wrote the song lyrics first then the music. Songs are typically written around a riff then built on.
Keith McArdle I’m not looking for complexity, just looking for a Van Halen album, I don’t know what this is
@Lorenzo de' Medici I'm with you. This idea that technical complexity and wizardry equals good listening is just absurd. I checked out this and two other songs from VH III recommended as "underrated." There's not a hook among them. It's this type of dreck that killed rock as popular music.
I love the new record ( though Eddie's mixed too low imo), but, I love VH3, too!
@guitargod21122112 Agreed. Eddie sounds like he's on autopilot here. The new CD is much better, IMHO.
I don't know what has been worse to live through as a VH fan. People constantly calling this album a turd, or bitching about how they have nothing new. Luckily that's changed now, but man...
@jroxx11211 But the lead vocals are not terrible. You may not like them, but they are done in quality by a quality singer. As I said, it is not the best Cherone has done, but it is still a good performance by him; if you dislike what he did, that is your entitled opinion, but the bottom line is that Van Halen III bombed (this being a comparative bomb and not a flop) for a variety of reasons that had little to do with the new vocalist.
@jroxx11211 You seem caught up in a wrong idea. Cherone sings, if not at the very top of his game, then at least close to. In no way is this lacking in vocal performance. There are many things that contributed to the lack of success - the leave of Sammy Hagar, the departure from their original style, the not complete success at this, no professional producer, and - the part that the critics actually complained about - the rhythm section. You cite wrongs, but they cannot be traced to Cherone.
Great song!
@fiero65 one of the best VH concerts I went to was VH3!! Gary did an awesome job singing the Dave era tunes.
@jduran1995 hahahahah!!! I agree but I also think it goes to shit after 1:51
well..let me put it like this...eddies guitar carried this shizznickel..
@MrScottyQuick SO DAMN RIGHT !!!
Best song of this album.
@RedJimiGuitar I think Ed played Bass, and Drums on many of these songs, as well as the mixing. Still a rockin' VH CD.
thankyou for this upload
horrible :( ...laziest EVH guitar solo I ever heard.
Dude youre fuckin retarted
THANKS 5150 GUITAR LESSONS!!! YOU ARE B-A-N-G ON!
i was always surprised they did release this song as a single and gave it more radio play...def one of the stronger songs from VH3
i wanna live , so let me die.. by the way , whatz your sign..
Love the whole record!
only decent song on album
This album may not have received the attention of other Van Halen releases, but this song is great. No one can deny that "Fire in the Hole" doesn't sound like true vintage Van Halen. Gary Cherone was also not accepted and received well, but I think he did a great job on this album! Thanks for posting!
thanx for posting this.. such a great song
one of my favourites from the album
