Van Etten, Sharon - I Told You Everything Lyrics

Sitting at the bar, I told you everything
You said, "Holy shit, you almost died"
Sharing a shot, you held my hand
Knowing everything, knowing everything, we cried
I told you everything about everything

I had no idea, I had no idea
We held hands, we held hands
We held hands as we parted
We knocked knees, we knocked knees as it started

I told you everything about my first time
I told you everything, no change in your eyes
I told you everything, no change in my mind

You said, "Holy shit, we almost died"
I had no idea, I had no idea

"I told you everything, you said: holy shit, you almost died..."

These lines are everything to me. I love you Sharon.

  3. L.... O....

This is some shit one of my exs would sing or write. I guess I lacked depth. Wtf Youtube.. anyway.zzzz

  4. S.... ....

Why is that naked girl in a sink?

  5. L.... D....

This album is like a perfect sequel to Are We There.

The piano in the beggining reminds me Afraid Of Nothing, and both are the first songs.

    L.... D....

Have noticed that too.. pretty similar

  6. M.... A....

    Excellent

  7. E.... B....

I love her voice so much! I’m so glad I started watching OA or else I probably never would’ve heard her.

  8. B.... B....

    Why so many dislikes?

    B.... B....

    Because it sucks

    B.... B....

@Liz Bradshaw Nah, it's quite good.

    B.... B....

Have you heard it? A five year old could make better sounds!

  9. E.... C....

    Me encanta!! :3

  10. M.... ....

Just saw her a week ago, great show! I didn't know any of her stuff from the more recent albums, but the set was excellent regardless

  11. A.... R....

It's poignant. Simple, subtle, and the description of the interaction is beautifully succinct. So much written in so little.

  12. .... ....

i think this is brave and honest

I'm so disappointed with this album. Where are the heartfelt songs?

    D.... H....

If this song isn't heartfelt, please show me one that is.

    D.... H....

I find myself going back to Sharon's first couple of albums (self-titled and Because I Was in Love) because I miss their intimacy and vocal displays. These new songs are a bit cold from the few I've heard so far, despite their personal lyrics.

    D.... H....

@Philip Lane I'd argue that the lyrics in this track are certainly heartfelt, but the instrumentation and performance are more bland and cold than her past songs. Take an old song like "Keep," for example. It's so fragile and heartbreaking. Maybe it's the higher vocal register that does it for me.

    D.... H....

@Kirk I think the new songs are more ethereal/mystical, which can read as cold or detached. And like you said, the instrumentation is a little more... standard? They sound good but it makes them sound a little more like Florence Welch

way better than 17, am i the only one who thinks this??

    T.... G....

    Toby Gay No

What do you think she's telling him? I think she's telling him about her infidelity and breaking his heart. And I think then she remembers back to when they first fell in love and she confided him, telling him "everything.'' Would love to hear other interpretations. This song is achingly beautiful and deep. I love it.

    C.... S....

@August Skylar Yeah, that sounds right, too.

    C.... S....

    That you’re a nerd

personally, I see it as she was open with him about her life and her fears but she was caught off guard to hear that he wasn't happy in the relationship because he never told her anything

    C.... S....

"It was the first time I ever sat down with someone – and you know like you have those experiences where you’re talking to a friend and you start telling this really intense story and you realize they haven’t heard it before? And it’s like, oh, well, okay. I’m going to tell you this story and it’s going to take our friendship to the next level. Are you ready for that? I remember I was telling – at the time, he was my drummer, now he’s my partner – we had just finished rehearsing for the Nick Cave tour and we were rehearsing all these songs as a duo. After practice one day, we went to a bar to talk about things – and I told him something about my past and realized I hadn’t told him a certain story. It’s one of those things I’m still learning how to tell friends, let alone in the public eye. And as I told him, I saw him change. He looked at me differently. Not in a belittling way, but like he knew me more. I took for granted that I hadn’t told him this part of my life, but it definitely shaped the person I am today. And it brought us closer together. And I remember this moment in slow motion in my mind, just watching him receive this story with such love as a friend. And I’ll never forget that "

    You are a moron...
