Undertones, The - Under The Boardwalk Lyrics

When the suns comes up and melts the tar up on the roofs
And your shoes get so hot you wish your tired feet were fireproof
Under the boardwalk down by the sea, yeah
On a blanket with my baby is where I'll be

Under the boardwalk - out of the sun
Under the boardwalk - we'll be having some fun
Under the boardwalk - people walking about
Under the boardwalk - we'll be falling in love
Under the boardwalk - boardwalk

In the park you hear the happy sound of the carousels
We can almost taste the hotdogs, french fries they sell
Under the boardwalk down by the sea, yeah
On a blanket with my baby is where I'll be

Under the boardwalk - out of the sun
Under the boardwalk - we'll be having some fun
Under the boardwalk - people walking about
Under the boardwalk - we'll be falling in love
Under the boardwalk - boardwalk

Under the boardwalk down by the sea, yeah
On a blanket with my baby is where I'll be

Under the boardwalk - out of the sun
Under the boardwalk - we'll be having some fun
Under the boardwalk - people walking about
Under the boardwalk - we'll be falling in love
Under the boardwalk - boardwalk

Je vous remercie Dominique pour avoir rendu ce vidéo disponible. Je crains que mon francais ne soit pas suffisamment fort pour écrire mes pensées ci-dessous en francais, mais merci quand-meme!

No 25 Under The Boardwalk – The Undertones.  Song all the way whether it be the Undertones, the Drifters or for all I know a whole host of performers. It’s just such a sex in the summer masterpiece. The Undertones version has particularly positive vibes for me as I most associate it with the Gaeltacht, a cauldron of teenage sexual excitement where you met girls from exotic locations such as Drogheda, Dundalk and even Dublin and charmed them with your macho northern accent which also carried a handy touch of menace if you were acting the hard man. I think the same applied in England many years later as well.
A lot of the usual elements which make me like any Undertones song are present in force on this cover: Feargal’s unique voice, the ever so Derry backing vocals of the lads and the nice snappy punky no nonsense abrupt end to the song. To my mind what I like about it most are the lead and especially the ever present rhythm guitar. These add the 70s/80s flavour of my youth to the mix. I also have a vague memory of the point where the lead guitar kicks in at the end of each chorus that if we were sitting around in a group on the ground, which was often the case, we would all automatically fall backwards at this point and air guitar along with the song.
I also noticed that the next suggestion for a video on Youtube when I searched for this song was an hour long BBC4 documentary on the group which is well worth a watch if you have a little time to spare, especially if you’re from Derry and you want to brush up on your “telling-the-young-ones-these-days-how-tough-it was-back-in-the-day” skills.

Sean Doherty , for me it’s was a great cover of this song, in true undertones two cord style, quick and snappy and all their material, delivered that way , don’t think they ever recorded anything over 3mins 20 seconds, I remember going to see them at the Glasgow Apollo in 1980 , me and my mate both babbling from consuming too much German beer beforehand. Somehow, we managed to gain entry, not quite sure how this happened, we’d never get in Like that these days, anyway, was a fantastic gig , brings back great memories hearing their music again , Derry s finest ☘️☘️
