Uncle Lucius - Keep The Wolves Away Lyrics

Took my first breath where the muddy Brazos
Spills into the Gulf of Mexico
With a skyline that's colored by chemical plants
To put bread on the table of the working man
Where the working man does his best to provide
Safety and shelter for kids and a wife
Giving a little of his soul everyday
Making overtime to keep the wolves away

I was barely thirteen when the company man
Tried to dig my daddy's grave
It happened on a French owned tanker ship
Spilling poison in the Galveston Bay
Well, the liquid fire filled his lungs and his eyes
Silenced any mortal cries
Cold in the grip of death's stinging pain
He fought like hell to keep the wolves away

For the next few years, dad was sick as a dog
But he made a recovery just to spite the odds
The settlement came and we moved out of town
Where the sky isn't heavy with refinery clouds
Yeah, he's still alive, he's doing good, he's in his 50s
But the money's running out and he's pinching for pennies
So I'm going for broke with every song I play
'Cause now it's my turn to keep the wolves away

After looking at the comments, most of you forget that country music doesn’t sound like this on the radio, so those thumbs down are people who don’t know that this is what real music is supposed to sound like

This song is so real and raw!

My dad worked 16 hour days as a pipefitter. He got sick when I was 16...luckily he's still alive...and doing well

He worked even though he was sick it almost killed him.

I can’t believe how much this reminds me of my dad, and from stories that my mom told me about him. When my mom was pregnant with me, my dad served in the Louisiana National Guard. But even that wasn’t enough. He also had a second job doing electrician and maintenance work at a shipyard here in New Orleans.

The thing is, the shipyard he was working at at the time didn’t have many safety issues put in place and OSHA rarely inspected it. A few cranes had previously fallen and other various deaths occurred there. The company that owned it was also on the verge of going bankrupt and didn’t have enough money to pay its workers. Many people quit for better money, and most of the ones that quit were the ones keeping the place in order. My dad stayed though. He stayed to support my mom and support me when I was born.

One day, he went to work at the shipyard, usual day like any other, and didn’t come home. He was fixing live wires, and was electrocuted and killed instantly. He passed in 2000 when I was just 6 weeks old.

An investigation was done and confirmed that the wires was connected to a breaker but the breaker couldn’t be turned off because it was connected to another machine that was currently and needed to be running. They told my dad to fix the damaged wires, even with the breaker on. My mom filed a lawsuit, which was just one out of hundreds of previous lawsuits. The company was shut down and a new one took over.

My mom had to live off of the survivor benefits until I was old enough to start working. She’s getting back on her feet though has a job of her own now and I do too. It’s been a struggle but I know my dad would be proud if he saw where I was at today.

And to who ever read this whole thing, thank you. This is just something I needed to share and I felt comfortable here after seeing other comments about their story.

my dads been an alcoholic since he was able to buy a beer, i understand it bc he’s had a very rough life. he’d come back from the bar when he was still with my mother & still be up by 4am & back home at 8pm from building houses. he always abused women he dated, lied, was in fights constantly, in jail back & fourth but always treated me like i was fine china. took me fishing when he had just hours of sleep in days, built me a bunk bed when he didn’t have money to buy one, packed me on his shoulders at the creek bc i didn’t like my feet wet, gave me half his fried when i said i wasn’t hungry. nothing made him see red towards me. loved me to death. not a single drop in his heart of hate for me has ever been in him. ive never even heard his raise his voice at me. one of the greatest men & one of the worst men i’ve ever met. loved me but still managed to hurt everybody even me. this song reminds me of what he must feel like, drinking to keep his wolves away.

Being raised with your Daddy going to work in the Industrial Revolution everyday, praying you see him at 5 o'clock alive. It is hard for a child, waking up to kissing him goodbye... Everyday. Waiting Scared of that phone call.... the plant that blew. My Daddy is out now, but I still call when a plant blows...To make sure my parents are ok. No one should have to go though that. Everyone has dreams...and no amount of money can bring your Daddy back. Lawyers and the chemical companies always win.

“There’s better choices!” one of em said.
Don’t blame your husband, don’t blame your wife
“For you’re the director of your life!”
Need to change your life’s direction?
“Start with the mirror and it’s reflection”
Need to turn your life around?
“One day at a time to solid ground”
Reach up and out for a helping hand
“We all must crawl before we stand”
“On higher ground the soul is fed”
    Little voices inside my head!

"Where the skyline's colored by chemical plants"

That line hit close. The entire southern half of my home state of Louisiana is a friggin chemical plant. It's funny, when I was younger, I never once thought that I would be working in one, but that all changed when I got my first full time job at a plant in Laplace, LA back in 08. I've been in the business ever since lol.

    L.... ....

    @Brandon Shaw

No, I'm actually trying to get on a job right now, in Luling.. Doesn't look like it's gonna happen though, I'm kinda getting tired of waiting..

Oh shit, ya, I remember reading something about a boat going down near Laplace on facebook, but this was some time ago, like a year, year and a half maybe. Is that the one you're talking about?

Headed to my second shift on a Friday night. Son of a single mother whom she raised me and my little brother with checks only about 200 a week. But now I’m 23 yr old and got my Electrical journeyman license to keep this damn wolves away.

Good song. Wife of a hard working husband who this song reminds me of. Works hard to provide for our family. He’s put his time in the oil field 70 hour weeks for many years. Now in construction after a lay off. Does what he has to do to keep the wolves away. Not everyone has a rich mommy and daddy.

Ypu always know musical genius... It goes under rated, under appreciated BUT never miss understood. For the those that still know great music fair play. This is REAL music.👍 January 2020

As a person 20 years on the job law enforcement forced out on medical I can relate to this song. Many hours of overtime or trying to pick up an extra job on the side. Many of nights I would miss my kids play a game or two. I want to give my kids everything I can. My parents busted ass to give me everything they could and to this day I know I will never be able to return the favor. Be strong and go hard. A wise man once told me if you can’t join em, Fuck em! Guys or girls stay safe and keep strong in the end it really doesn’t even matter.....

  71. V.... S....

Tip my hat to y’all who got this playing. You’re not alone.

Great Song. I was put on a Tractor at the age of Five in a small Southern Ga town. I didn't do anything but sit there and observe my dad and his two brothers as they cropped tobacco and put it on the sled the Tractor was pulling, it was a wooden sled with no wheels just runners. We were White Share Croppers. At 7 I worked 3 days a week in the summer driving a tractor. Dollar a day at 7, 2 at 8, 3 at 9, 3 and a half at ten. AT 11 we moved to South Carolina and dad went to work in a Cotton Mill. I was put the work in the Mill at age 14 and a half. Worked hard my Whole life and still struggling at 66 just to, as the man said, "Keep The Wolves At Bay"

  73. J.... F....

Air Force brat as a kid. Dad got out and we struggled hard for years but we made it. I served in the army, now I live down the road from my dad. My pap his dad passed a few years back. He said the other day that he wished pap could see us now. We made it

  74. N.... J....

I have ordered this album off amazon and can't get it. Now it says sold out? Please produce more. This song has gotten me through a shit ton of anger.

  75. G.... ....

Not sure that I keep the wolves away, but so far they are on the other side of the door and I will damn well make sure that it stays that way. Just gonna say this. The Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times" is in all of our back yards. Maybe in these times when it seems like the US is split in two that many of us share this song in common. Common ground isn't really all that hard to find, most of us suffer together.

  76. M.... M....

i grew up poor, worked my whole life and raised 4 boys on my own... i totally get it

  77. C.... C....

Being 22 and my dad pasted and now I have to not only help my immediate family cope both financially and emotionally with his passing at 50 but I am also having to start my own family it really helps me to keep from breaking. Sometimes it feels like I am at my limits but I know at the end of the day the wolves would do more to them than to me. Beautiful song and really well needed in times like this.

  78. A.... M....

god damn this is a good song

  79. Z.... T....

This song makes my heart melt.

  80. D.... G....

Great song! Success is never owned, it's only rented and the rent is due everyday!

  81. D.... K....

From the time we are born we work so hard to keep the wolves away!!!☯️

  82. M.... T....

I work all day and sleep at work, washing my body in a sink that produces only ice cold water. I have no home and my wife lives with girlfriends living the dream while I break my back to pay debt and put on the table for my kids who live with their grandmother. Im a disabled veteran giving half my check away to child support and giving all my babies full medical, eye, and dental insurance. I have no car but a sense of satisfaction carries me to a gentle sleep on the floor of my jobs filing closet. Keeping the wolves away is all I know.
    Thank you for this song.

  83. S.... K....

All time greats write hear!! Even as a mostly single mother raising children, grown or not, a dedicated parent or person gets this. Loyalty, honesty, & sum souls are priceless & never sell.. in my book rising above, obstacles, haters, always brings forward courage & hard work to protect who & what you love.

  94. S.... M....

I'm not a cryer but holy fuck. This song gets me every fuckin time 😢

One of the truest songs I've ever heard, might be a lotta people out there sayin a lotta shit about ma dad but he's done and still does more for his family than most men ever will. Now it's been at the stage for the past few years where its my turn to pay it back, my turn to keep the wolves away.

  95. l.... w....

Son of a factory worker. My entire family worked in factories. Aunts, Uncles, Grandfather...everyone. This song makes me think of something my father told me one day when I was 15 or 16. I asked him why he did so gave so much extra work for a job he hated. "I hate my job, but I'm proud of my work. No one will remember the work you do, but when you leave everyone will remember your name. You decide the way they remember it." Since that conversation some 19 years ago I was a Marine for 10 of them, went to Iraq twice and Afghanistan once. Been married, had kids, and got divorced. Been through dark stages of depression, lost buddies to suicide, and watch my kids grow up. Now I'm a tower climber and my dad will tell me that he's proud of me all the time. I'm a red blooded, blue collar patriot and I will always tip my hat to the men and women keeping the wolves away.

  96. B.... ....

To all oil riggers workers out there, Thank you for all what you do. You are the backbone of the modern world.Thank you, please thumbs up to show the support of how much we all need them and know how hard that job is.

This song reminds me of so much of my dad. His lungs are shot from working in an oil refinery for so long. He worked an insane amount of overtime to make sure we were taken care of. Now my husband is working in the same refinery. This song means so much to me and hits me right in my heart.
