Ultravox - One Small Day Lyrics

If the stack is high against you
And the hammer's coming down
And the time that's yours lies heavy in your hands
Oh my sentimental friend
The fast much reach an end

Lying face down on the cold stone
And they give their all to you
But their all is slipping through your hands
Oh my sentimental friend
Your time will come again

One day where I didn't die a thousand times
Where I could satisfy this life of mine
One small day
One day where every hour could be a joy to me
And live a life the way it's meant to be
One small day

How many times has it turned against you
How many times will they walk away
How many times have you let depression win the fight
Oh my sentimental friend
We'll walk as one again

One day where I didn't die a thousand times
Where I could satisfy this life of mine
One small day
One day where every hour could be a joy to me
And live a life the way it's meant to be
One small day

How many times has it turned against you
How many times will they walk away

One day where I didn't die a thousand times
Where I could satisfy this life of mine
One day where every hour could be a joy to me
And live a life the way it's meant to be

One day where I wouldn't feel my senses die
Where nothing made me hang my head and cry
One day where I could see myself as others do
Where I could feel the strength of love at hand

One day where I didn't die a thousand times
Where I could satisfy this life of mine
One day where every hour could by a joy to me
And live a life the way it's meant to be

great song but the middle bit is off the middle bit on Hawkwind's Hassan i sahb, in fact Midge's whole guitar playing sounds like Hawkwind

Well done boys. Great music. Great band. I’m still listening. I’m 62 now.

  21. D N

Lyrics and music have given me that extra lift I sometimes need in life. The vid is ok but compared to 'dancing' or others of a similar timeline it just lacks that Ultravox quality

  22. enrico bianchin

1984 has been an incredible year for music!

  33. Mickey Perez

EXCELENTE ROLA, BUEN GRUPO, AQUELLOS FASCINANTES 80. MMMMMMMMM GRACIAS POR COMPARTIR.

  34. David Fullam

Loved how Midge never looked the same way twice. We had Blue Blood Midge, Fighter Pilot Midge, Tough Guy Midge. Now we have Elder Statesman Midge. If it wasn't for the voice, I would have sworn about 4 or 5 different guys fronted Ultravox.

  35. Anna Vardyan

Warum hat dieser Klassiker aus den 80er so wenige " Likes " ???

  38. Robert De Bellême

That magical first time I heard “One small day”, years ago: I was 17 and I was innocent, idealistic and so very impressionable. I was an angered, confused young boy, close to resign life. Then, at a so cold and cloudy winter afternoon, when I was doing a hard, complicated high school homework with a classmate for which I had complicated feelings; we were at his place (He was living alone because his parents was living in another country). Suddenly I start to heard that incredibly romantic, powerful and heroic lyrics with that sweet, juvenile, brave melody and, therefore, I recovered my lost wish to living, to feeling; I recovered my desire to feel the cloudy days light, these cold airs and have the power to react to all that with the renewed force from my strong youth. As else older commentors said before me: that was a magical age. How lucky people who was young in those haunted years.

    ANTESIGNANI!!!!!

  39. Terrence Bunce

I remember the music video during "the conformist, get with the program" era of the 80's, when anything "individualism" like was considered selfish, the wrecking ball of societal norms etc. etc. etc. This song gave me a sense of identity which continues...
    Thank you Ultravox

  40. daveb6214

Brings back great memories of great music and better times. If only I could go back to those times !!!!

  41. 240ups

I love seeing bands in exotic locations. It's like a right of passage from baby band to grown up band. Because in interviews when they re old they always say how shooting in...oh... Sri Lanka or the fucking Himalayas was fucking HELL! LOL. But they can't help it, they get a budget for video productions and they can"t resist. "I want to shoot while standing on Victoria falls in Africa. It'l be great guys, yeah let's do it.! We won't get Malaria!"

  42. Rob Whittaker

On a holiday to Scotland in the 1990s, I made a point of visiting the Callanish Stones so I could see where this video was shot (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callanish_Stones).

  43. 6Beers&1Waitress

2019, and still such an awesome song. Too bad this video has the volume too low.

  44. Maria Del Rocio Negrete Angeles

    Que recursos con éste vídeo!!!!
    Simplemente inolvidables y maravillosos........años maravillosos!!!

  45. Visage Information Service

Wasn't a lover of this track when I was much younger, but as I aged and understood the lyrics more, I've learnt to realise what a masterpiece this is, with very meaningful lyrics.

  46. Rosy A.

Cuánto los echo de menos en esa época!!!
    Nunca me cansaré de escucharlos...

  47. Gianfranco Corbula

Musica FANTASTICA che ha accompagnato la mia gioventù. Ultravox forever.

  48. The Greasy Belcher Show

No one ever talks about the inner Hebrides.

  49. Lorenzo Nonaizzi

Warren Cann here sounds much like in "Images of Heaven"... Love it!

  50. agrayak

    Ultravox at their best!

  51. baroque & roll

Visti in concerto a Mestre metà anni '80. 💙💚

    Gianfranco Corbula

    Io a Roma, novembre 1986

    baroque & roll

    @Gianfranco Corbula bei tempi eh?

    Gianfranco Corbula

  52. nigel glass

so brilliant, to the 16 thumbs down .. feck of and go fishing!

  53. ruth le

  55. Alejandro Moreno S.

SO amazing, simply spectacular song writing, and an unforgettable era, god I wish I could go back sometimes....

    rainjar

The song said a lot to me at a critical time in my life. Hymn, Visions In Blue and this song.

  69. Elisabetta Bassoli

Fantastic I see in concerto Roma 30 year old😍

  70. David Burgreen

My absolute favorite!!! Midge Ure at the top of his game.

  71. Keith Kirkwood

Crumbs. Need a return to Callanais. Epic track

  72. andy good

I see, we love British your music. You don't like anymore Europeans people, from east even more. It's little shame. Ok. We will survive, nevertheless, we love you!

    aaron frost

Sorry, could you rephrase that? Its worded a bit odd.

  73. Lenny Russell

This was very underrated when it was released people said it sounded like Big Country's Wonderland but can't see it myself. It was very good live as well should have done better in the charts but that is Ultravox all over.

    orion deschamps

Lenny Russell Plus how is that an insult

    Ralph Jackson

I can't see a resemblance either, perhaps people were merely comparing them because they were both in the charts at the same time,in February 1984. Wonderland got to number 8,which was fine by me as I do like a good blast of Big Country, and One Small Day reached number 27.

    Tom Alexander

Hawkwind, Dave Brock's guitar sound actually

    getsensus

Never listen to Big Country, its just nothing to compare, maybe they are good, but not the level of Ultravox

  74. TheBigHase

One of their best songs imo. And the lyrics a sad recapture of my life...

    thesexybadger

    You and me both kid

    Everton Porter

The early to mid Eighties was a rough time for me personally, but the music was good!

  75. Paul Lindley

Midge says the word time or times in every song

    Jacob R

Vienna doesn't mention the word time or times and neither does Astradyne.

    Judy in the Sky

He doesn’t say time in Lament, White China, Visions in Blue, I remember (Death in the Afternoon), The Voice, Lie, or All Stood Still.

  76. Maticot

Ultravox always, the best of the best.

  77. MsMiguel70

Wonderful. Growth hormone for my then young ear.

  78. Rick Veronese

The bass takes the cake in this song I just love it

  79. Rico Alvarez

    Love this video

  80. Patrick Parker

hell-s to the ya. Midge Ure. Bitches.

  81. Shauna

This song saved my life. Thank you Midge

    kik Urass

This song and another by a rather unknown band "sHEAVY" with their Ultraglide song, both tracks inspire us to keep going, many thanks to both bands. Here's Ultrglide with lyrics, incase you wanted to have a listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gDg9CECcd8

    Gianfranco Corbula

Shauna, hai tutta la mia stima e il mio affetto.

    President Kudsi

What do you mean saved your life?

    calanais06

Same here, my only lifeline during a long time... I have personally thanked Midge this and for writing the song when I met him two years ago.
