U2 - Winter Lyrics
The yellow sun
Well, it took the hand
Of a country boy
To a city in a far-off land
No shadow at all
On the ancient, holy streets
Where I learned to crawl
The broken and the bruised
The young and the used
The sure and confused
All here
Words will then land on me
Mangle, untangle me
Leave me on the floor
Rhymes, they sprang in me
Summer sang in me
But summer sings in me no more
Now I'm twenty-five
And trying to stay alive
In a corner of the world
With no clear enemies to fight
It's hot as hell
We're like butter on toast
But there's no army in this world
That can fight a ghost
The broken and the bruised
The young and the used
The sure and confused
All here
Words will then land on me
Then abandon me
Leave me stranded
In guard of the door
Rhymes began in me
Summer sang in me
But summer sings in me no more
Listening to the cries
Exchangings
The silence in the foreign ground
Listening to the thunder
The sky is strange
Stretched over everyone
Listening to the tanks
The shots come
The noise from dusk till dawn
Listening to the calls
Shouts, frustration
At twenty-one
I was born a son
And on that day I knew
I could kill
To protect the ones
We put bullets in guns
Or anything it takes
To take a life until it's still

Sois Increíbles...😚😚😚
I love this!!!
Cada día son mejores no tengo palabras
This song would have fit so well somewhere in NLOTH. I'm utterly baffled as to how this song never made it and is instead just a b-side that most people have never heard.
This song kidnaps you...
madly beautiful words rythms strong feelings! Love it.
Eu amo Rock!
Eu amo o U2!
I love this song sooooo much and I think it's one of their finest. WHY IS IT NOT ON SPOTIFY THOUGH? :'(
Winter is best time of year because it is summer time when I holiday overseas.💦✈️☀️🔥🌎.
I'm convinced that one of the great lost rock/ethereal rock/rock concept albums is the unreleased May 2008 "finished" version of No Line on the Horizon, the one that they were confident enough about at that time (well, at least three out of four of them -- I'm not sure Larry ever liked the album in any iteration) to commission Anton Corbijn to make the Linear video/movie to accompany the album release. The track order alone screams concept album: "Unknown Caller," "Breathe" (with the earlier South African activist lyrics, not the later more personal ones), "Winter," "White as Snow," "No Line on the Horizon" (probably different at that point from the final version), "Fez -- Being Born," "Magnificent," "Stand-Up Comedy" (in a form definitely very different from the released song, as it was the last song to be finished, and probably back then called "For Your Love"), "Get on Your Boots" (again, a good bet that it was different from the final version), "Moment of Surrender,' and "Cedars of Lebanon." Reportedly, all of the songs at that point traced different characters that Bono created; there apparently were no personal lyrics back then. I love NLOTH as released -- it's still a concept album, and it's easily their most overlooked and underrated album -- but I would love to see what they produced before they started radically second-guessing themselves and thinking they needed to add some hits to the album. NLOTH is a musical descendant of both The Unforgettable Fire (1984) and its close (if more techno) cousin, Original Soundtracks 1 (the Passengers album, 1995). Thematically, it picks up more logically from where we left off at the end of Pop (1997) than All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000) did.
I think it's still the best album of 2000's U2, but it could be a masterpiece if they headed with the tracklist you mentioned alongside with "Soon" as the opener.
Que música foda! Esse final è espetacular! Melhor Banda do mundo!
Really is an amazing song..its beyond me why it wasnt put on nloth
Only really like the opera bit at the end
this song is so beautiful, I can't even begin to describe what it does to me
Number 1 million
love you
worst winter song ever wtf
sorry I'm an asshole, but fuck you
....another faded and weak song by these punters.
Hector Von Ripper Hey Hector Von Fuckface go take a long walk off of a short pier.
In your opinion. In my opinion this is another gem from a band that is unrivalled.
Sehr schön. Ich liebe U2 (Ana Schmitt)
Obrigado U2 , vocês continuam sendo os melhores... música linda!!!
so many underrated songs by u2...yet this is one that could end a concert and have as many u2 fans confused (huh? what song is this?) as euphoric
Beordrad kyla direkt till mitt rum. Krigszonen
OMFG I have no words
Geez... this is another great unreleased song
The best thing's with U2 is that the B Side, or The tracks never played are all better than the official tracks......
I love this track.Cool cool cool.....
I Love it.
For everyone wondering why this isn't on an album, it was written for Brothers and can be found on that soundtrack.
Derek, while you're apparently right about it originally being written for Brothers, it was nevertheless set to be the third track on what the band at the time thought was a finished No Line on the Horizon album in May 2008. They then decided the album was not finished after all and worked on it for another seven months before calling it complete in late December of that year. In the process, they dropped "Winter" over co-producer Brian Eno's objections; he suggested in one interview that the band lost the nerve to include it, feeling that it was too experimental for the final album. (The band evidently never had any qualms about both including it on NLOTH and giving it to Brothers.) Sometime in this timeline, the band had decided to give "White as Snow" to Brothers instead of "Winter," but once they dropped the latter song from NLOTH they went back to using "Winter" for Brothers. To fit the movie better, they rerecorded the song, making it more acoustic and closer to The Edge's original musical conception of the song; this YouTube clip is of the May 2008 NLOTH version.
Actually it was written for the NLOTH-album when it was a concept album about a man. Anton Corbijn made short films to every song - films that put together should tell the mans story. But then u2 ditched the idea, changed the running order of the songs and replaced some of the original songs with others.
But the films Corbijn made is featured on the de luxe version of NLOTH.
Here's a link to the wikipedia article about Linear- the film Anton Corbijn made for the NLOTH songs:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_(film)
AnDubh, I thought so as well (that it originally was written for NLOTH) due to some of Brian Eno's comments about the song, but Wikipedia claims in its article on "Winter" that Jim Sheridan, the director of Brothers, requested a song for his film from the band very early on, perhaps before filming had even started. The Edge then wrote the melody for "Winter," and the band originally planned it for the movie, not NLOTH. But when the film got delayed, they shifted to putting it on NLOTH, only to leave it off in the end. In any case, there's no question that it was set to be included in the May 2008 "finished" version of NLOTH that formed the basis for Linear, and Eno said they left it off of NLOTH only because they lacked the guts to keep it on there. Eno tried to persuade them to keep it on the album even as it was nearing completion in late 2008. Elsewhere on this thread, I discuss my theory that the May 2008 "finished" NLOTH is probably a lost masterpiece and discuss Linear in that context.
I love this song. It is so deep, sad, melancholic and light at the same time. Bono nails it again...
One of the best melodies over the last 25 years. How the f**k could they dismis it. Som trimming and then it is as good as a popsong gets
It could have been a killer hit ...
First heard the slower version during the credits of the film Brothers (2009) and loved it, then found this the next day. I've listened to it non-stop for a week now. What a great song. I've never been the biggest U2 fan but this is definitely one of their best and my favourite song of theirs.
Im glad they let this song out of Songs of inocence. I love it, but i cant stand to the idea that this track avoid that we hear Every Breaking Wave, California or cedarwood Road. Even when is only a soundtrack we can always hear Winter instead.
Epic tune, one more masterpiece left aside. Incredible...
This song is beautiful, U2 are de Best... (Y) (Y) (Y)
This song is unfocused...
There's like 3 song ideas 💡 here...
Maybe musically you can make that argument (although I'd disagree), but lyrically it's very cohesive.
Said nobody.
Good start, smart lyrics, but the tune and the lyrics all collapse into shit half way through. Shame, someone please tell them. I ve been a fan for twenty odd years, since mid nineties.
Ok the end bit isn't that bad...👍🏾
Caution: listen to this once and you'll be humming the chord progression against your will for the rest of day, even at the dentist
Beautiful!
Vive la musique vive le rock vive u2
It's missing the part: "So glad you made it hooooooooome..." :(
Tiago Abrantes no its not ecoute ma Cher ecoute
Tengo 15 años y estoy escuchando U2. La música de ahora es pura mierda, daría lo que fuera por haber nacido en la decada del 30 en Alemania siendo judío. Nací en la generación equivocada.
No sería ningún logro.
U Tube for U Two
最初の前奏がスキーを思い出す
Sorry bra, I have no idea what that says. That third character looks like a fishy.
this song is one of the best songs ever from u2... really just incredible.
This has to be on songs of experience!! One of their best
So many gems like this that are hidden.so sad what a waste get them out there somehow
U2 has some great b-sides and unreleased tracks.
nintendofan204 I was really disappointed to hear this song wouldn't be included in their last album
The video to it is included in the deluxe-version of NLOTH
its not a catchy song, yet a song..
Artem S U2 is not a pop band...
Amei essa música
A pure band U2
Unglaublich schön
Ja, ich denke das auch.
por la misma mierda ! esta es la banda de mi vida! ... nada igual ni de cerca!
the most fabulous u2 song that has never been put into album which makes her more attractive
The intro takes me somewhere else. This song is beautiful.
maybe. but I would suggest it sounds more like something from The Unforgettable Fire or Joshua Tree - with an updated sound for the 21st century.
so is ur soul
This is quite a beautiful massage read - " Revelation 22:1-5 ESV / 327 helpful votes Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
I agree every time I listen to this intro it never gets old and puts me in my head
Soundtrack?
@dean schmautz yep....brothers....
+Luis E Brother's
this song makes me feel things and think beautiful things... when I die some day I hope this song is playing in the back ground some how lol
WHY HASNT THIS BEEN RELEASED YET? :((
Sounds old too.
Such a beautiful song!
i hope too ! This is the song of experience !!
Hauntingly beautiful song.
+Racheal Brimberry It sure is - just loving the profound & meaniful lyrics & what a lovely sad melody - such an appropiate song indeed for this day & age......................
My wife
Essa música mexeu muito comigo, uma letra extraordinária com um baixo muito bem trabalhado e um vocal formidável. Parabéns u2
this would have been a nice addition to new album, but as artists you have to accept the need to create new stuff
LOVE IT........
oh I noticed this one only now!
+Davide Basile This song is from the 2009 movie "Brothers" starring Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire.
there's no army that can fight a ghost
I hope this is on Songs of Experience
+Andre de Bree It was in Linear, but I don't think it was ever released as a single track that you can purchase.
This song will never be in Song's Of Experience.Never.It's too latte......
This song is 10 year's old......Why this song will be in a new album?I don't think so.
(from op, different account)
There actually is a chance that Songs of Ascent will still be released as the end of the trilogy. As unreliable as Bono is, he has mentioned this. Personally I think this song was originally going to be on that album.
It is also not unheard of for U2 to recycle pieces of years old songs. The intro to City of Blinding Lights was conceived during the pop sessions and was not released until HTDAAB came out 7 years later. Many of the songs that were originally supposed to be on Songs of Ascent ended up in their final forms on Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience. Every Breaking Wave went through a massive overhaul and got a new chorus. Glastonbury became Volcano & American Soul. North Star became Song for Someone & 13. Return of the Stingray Guitar became Lucifer's Hands. A song called Lead Me in the Way I Should Go from the fucking early 2000's eventually became The Morning After Innocence which eventually became The Little Things That Give You Away. You get the point.
Winter could easily appear in an altered form in the future. Winter IMO is a top 10 U2 song, and they left it off the goddamn album that has fucking Get On Your Boots, Crazy Tonight, and SUC. Is this just a pipe dream? Probably, but it would also be naive to rule it out as a possibility.
dude your insight is insane. i've been a fan my whole life and never new 90% of this stuff. Songs of Ascent as an ender to the trilogy, in my opinion, could be absolutely remarkable. i cant wait to listen to it. The Edge said that he thinks that they will take a break after this 2018 tour though which is sad but understandable. What i want to know is, it takes them years and years to put out content when they have nothing to lose, and when they said that the album was ready to go it took them 3 more years, so with that said how long is it going to be with a break seriously
...davvero molto bella. Unici e mitici come sempre!
Linda canção!! Eles são demais!!!
I've been listening to U2 for 25 years my dad played them all my life and I love ended to this day
Love it. This along with at least 'Mercy' and 'Light speed' are easily good enough to be on an Album. Not sure why U2 are taking so long to get it together. There's a lot of critics & haters around & of course some U2 tracks are overplayed, but I think these guys are actually genius. Don't let The Bastards drag you down.
Love TLOTR reference.
Light speed wtf that's not U2. There is north star and Every breaking wave which are awesome but pretty sure the only song people have heard that will be on it is Invisible.
i think u2 dont put albums out as soon as they have 11 songs for marketing reasons when they work with a major record company that wants them to tour behind a record extensively and to not conflict with other tours.
First time I've seen someone else make that (LOTR) association. Glad to know I wasn't overinterpreting it.
@Frank Ribeiro Yeah, Light Speed is by a band called Golden State. Pretty awesome, thought not super-popular, group.
Omg it cld be their very best
autentica mierda... para lo que han quedado... que mierda de vida...
how did this song not make it onto no line on the horizon???
They actually removed it because the theme of this song was too dark and did not fit the other songs. At least thats what they said or how they felt.
+Itamei Panday That's strange. Cedars of Lebanon is very dark as well, but it ended up on the final album.
@Matthew LaTorre Cedar is dark but its about a Journalist in a war zone. Winter is about professional soldiers who kill for a living and end up with PTSD. The topic is much darker and really didn't fit with Crazy Tonight and get on your Boots etc.
+Rice Panday I really wish they had skipped Crazy Tonight and used Winter instead!
Because they had way better songs like get on your boost, stand up comedy and I'll go crazy!
U2 males me want to vomit.
U2 females me want to eat.
@seatgurus I so agree lol. I hate people who troll U2, some of the greatest musicians ever. If you don't like it WHY WOULD YOU LISTEN?!
@***** Amen!!!
Very true! I wish they'd stay under their bridges, instead of polluting the Internet with ignorance lmao
Learn to spell before trying to troll. :)
What a song
mmmm such a brilliant song
Perfection.
Nádhera !!!!!
Only good bit at the end
Great song
incredible incredible song,,,,,the beginning of the song, edge's guitar pretty much does all the talking.
