U2 - Wave Of Sorrow Lyrics

Heat haze rising
On hell's own hill

You wake up this morning
It took an act of will
You walk through the night
To get here today
To bring your children
To give them away

Oh... oh this cruel sun
Is daylight never done
Cruelty just begun
To make a shadow of everyone

And if the rain came
And if the rain came

Souls bent over without a breeze
Blankets on burning trees
I am sick without disease
Nobility on it's knees

And if the rain came
And if the rain came... now
Would it wash us all away
On a wave of sorrow
Wave
On a wave of sorrow

Where now the holy cities?
Where the ancient holy scrolls?
Where now Emperor Menelek?
And the Queen of Sheba's gold

You're my bride, you wear her crown
And on your finger precious stones
As every good thing now been sold

Son, of shepherd boy, now king
What wisdom can you bring?
What lyric would you sing?
Where is the music of the Seraphim?

And if the rain came
And if the rain came... now
Would it wash us all away
On a wave of sorrow
Wave
A wave of sorrow
Wave.

Blessed are the meek who scratch in the dirt
For they shall inherit what's left of the earth
Blessed are the kings who've left their thrones
They are buried in this valley of dry bones

Blessed all of you with an empty heart
For you got nothing from which you cannot part
Blessed is the ego
It's all we got this hour

Blessed is the voice that speaks truth to power
Blessed is the sex worker who sold her body tonight
She used what she got
To save her children's life

Blessed are you, the deaf cannot hear a scream
Blessed are the stupid who can dream
Blessed are the tin canned cardboard slums
Blessed is the spirit that overcomes

This song affects me. It still makes me emotional, even here in 2019. Even though it has to do with all of cruelty in Ethiopia, I tend to listen to this when I’m feeling sorry for myself or something is really bothering me.

People need to learn what this song is about before commenting.

    D.... ....

People need to learn about all songs. The lines between the lyrics.

    D.... ....

Please enlighten us with the true meaning of this song...as Bono entrusted you with the true meaning...

  16. p.... p....

    Fantastique

  17. E.... ....

Bonds voice sounds a lot like 2001 Bono with a hint of 2009 Bono, but this was Joshua Tree Era

    E.... ....

+edwardy26 This song, or at lest the vocals were re-recorded in 2007, that's why Bono's voice sounds like that.

    E.... ....

this comment is spot on, and i dont think i would have noticed without it

I Agree, What a Beautiful Song

  27. S.... F....

    That´s beautiful!!!

  28. M.... A....

You are correct but I think Bono's voice is fine now. After his back surgery during the 360 tour his voice improved significantly. The problem now is that during and after POP he trained himself to sing in his current higher and thinner voice to avoid the problem area. Which means that after so many years this style is natural for him. I think he can sing in his booming deep 80's and 90's voice again but it would mean having to completely retrain his singing style.

  29. F.... P....

Actualy, The version from the clinton concert is way better

    F.... P....

FilmCraft Productions nothing from the Clintons is better ....let’s hope their burning in hell soon

  30. U.... P....

Bono damaged his vocal chords beyond repair during the popmart tour and retrained his vocals to be more tenor than falsetto. Anyone who thinks his vocals aren't still up to much check the live version of miss sarejevo from the vertigo tour. thank you please

  31. S.... ....

    I agree Kelly !!

  32. s.... ....

This shows that even though Bono's vocal range has become a little limited, U2 can churn out masterpieces like this. Yes, Wave of Sorrow was an unfinished track pre Joshua Tree, but Bono recorded the vocals in 2007 to finish off this song. He did an amazing job! In fact his older voice sounds better here than his late 80's voice!

  33. T.... D....

That "Vertigo crap" is pretty fucking awesome. Just goes to show their diversity and the fact that they're not a "one trick pony"

  34. z.... ....

i cant beleve this is the same u2 that compose that vertigo crap

    z.... ....

    It's called...an open mind

  35. Z.... B....

One of the best unreleased song ever!

  36. c.... ....

I really like Bono's current voice for this song!

  37. W.... B....

Yeah, I recognize this song. Must have heard it somewhere before. U2's unreleased songs and b-sides are better than most band's top-shelf material. U2 is so prolific that a hundred years from now people will look back on them with the same reverence they'll have for The Beatles.

  38. L.... C....

To wake up this morning was an act of will.
    ;]

  39. D.... M....

    buenaaaa!!

  40. T.... ....

    @MJLU280 Why, thank you!

  41. R.... K....

Blessed is the spirit that overcomes...

  42. s.... o....

    @Romulus14 U2? Me 2 :)

  43. T.... ....

So, where can one find this song? Is it on a b-side or something?

  44. K.... O....

@KenfromDublin Forgot I heard it before, this is my second time hearing it for the first time...

  45. l.... ....

I miss songs like this from U2

  46. K.... f....

"The Sweetest Thing" was thrown over their shoulders too rather than make it on the Joshua Tree.

  47. K.... f....

Paused at 0:33 to type that this is my first time ever hearing this, never heard or knew of it before...

  48. A.... S....

@laboloche You are so right! They are just amazing. Followed them since "Boy" came out back in the early 80´s

  49. M.... K....

    @Romulus14
100% of a truth! I'm so in fuckin' good mood, this music make me feel great!:)

  50. E.... C....

Beautiful! This song deserves more recognition!

  51. A.... ....

    so beautiful

  52. n.... ....

a Wave of sorrow , was what Bono wanted with this song

  53. s.... ....

    @greatMJforeverN1 I noticed that too

  54. M.... C....

I love Bono and his message but this video does not relate to what he is singing about. He sings about Africans and their plight. The whole song is about refugees from an on-going war. Please don't confuse our nation's deserts with the African plight. He was singing specifically about the refugees from the Congo and Rewanda and the civil war there. Civil war in Central Africa. A very horrible thing......

  55. C.... S....

    Magnificent :D

  56. t.... ....

    @recobalegend20
I just heard it right here on youtube

  57. A.... ....

    tthanks

  58. Y.... O....

  60. g.... ....

Great song....however the ending chant sounds like the oompa loompas! U2 has a tendency to screw up a perfectly good tune!

  61. J.... B....

    Incredible that was a just a "B-side"!!! Viva U2

  62. R.... B....

U2 always gets me in a good mood, because their music is so full of hope

  63. P.... T....

    Great song. Felt really touched.

  64. a.... a....

che bella questa canzone --------mi piace tantissimo Grandi u2

  65. S.... ....

With all those unreleased songs, they can compose their best album ever. Amazing !!

  66. T.... D....

Yes, I found it on iTunes; search for "U2 Wave of Sorrow (Birdland)".

  67. G.... P....

how could this song have possibly been an "afterthought"? its magnificent! these lyrics are some of the most deep lyrics i have heard in a long time

  68. G.... P....

can we buy this song o iTunes? becuase i totally would

  69. T.... L....

    great song!! really amazing!

  70. S.... S....

    U2 wrote "Miami"

  71. P.... ....

Yeah, I didn't know this U2 song neither. I like it a lot. Recently I discovered Heartland, Spanish Eyes, Ground Beneath Her Feet as well. And I thought Im U2 fan. I'm ashamed...:-/

  72. D.... G....

Amazing... This is the first time I have come across this song by them. I need to listen play it over.

  73. J.... B....

    AchtungBaby79 is right!

  74. T.... D....

Yeah, it BLEW ME AWAY too the first time I heard it and became one of my favorites as well.

Can you imagine this song was "shelfed" and is essentially an "afterthought" as far as U2 are concerned?

  75. T.... D....

Leave out Bullet The Blue Sky? Are you NUTS? You ever seen that performed live on the Zoo Tv Outside Broadcast Tour?

But I agree, this song should have made it onto SOMETHING - even released as a single with no connection to any album.

But I think they just finished it a few years ago. Sounds more like current U2 then U2 circa Joshua Tree.

  76. z.... v....

    u2 the very best

  77. L.... V....

    waves...

  78. S.... R....

Oh my God!!!!! wooow....never heard it before i just stumbled into it!! I don't know how I missed it (hardcore u2 fan) man this a master piece...

  79. h.... ....

    i adore this song.
    magnificent.
    looove bono <3.

  80. E.... G....

Not ¨bullet the blue sky¨ but maybe ¨I trip Trough Your Wires¨

  81. i.... ....

i disagree this song should have just been added and they would have an extra song. Bullet the blue sky for me is amazing song i love it.

  82. z.... v....

you cant hear music like this its just u can hear it with u2 amazing

  83. z.... v....

this song you cant always hear music like this amazing by u2 thanks

  84. u.... ....

I thought the same thing, the beggining is very similar to Because The Night... They're both great songs so no matter :-P

  85. a.... ....

    good/solid song

  86. L.... D....

I watched the video of Bono explaining this song and singing it along with a rough demo. I had chills. This is a beautiful finished product. So no I have to go buy the Joshua Tree Deluxe edition!

  87. V.... ....

This song was originally written and recorded during the Joshua Tree sessions. But U2 couldn't finish it in time so it didn't make the album. They thought about it being a b-side but decided it was too good and release it on a later album. This never happened as U2 was rushed to finish The Joshua Tree. In 2007 Bono and U2 agreed to do a re-recording which they did and now this song is on the Deluxe Edition of The Joshua Tree which is available on iTunes.

  88. O.... C....

A little similar begining with "Because the night" of Springsteen. I guess this song is on The Josua Tree bonus from the 20 aniversary

  89. M.... ....

powerful words from you there my friend, and good advice. Thanks.

  90. y.... ....

one clothing drive for the homeless during winter, one canned good for the food shelter, one Red Product item on ur next motorolla or gap or apple purchase... or one dollar a month pledged to unicef relief agency... saving the world doesn't have to be dramatic. dramas are generally the explosive effect of many small roles. let bono and gandhi take the big reigns, we can simply be the legs of the horse. one little step at a time. help where u can. that's all-

  91. N.... ....

    Brividi!!!!!!!!!!!

  92. M.... ....

thanks for the info on 'wave of sorrow'. I'm stunned by this song. Both in its sad melody and profound words. Why is this world one of such extremes? What can we do for the poorest of the poor? I want to help but am so frustrated by my own lack of ability to do what appears to be a meaningful way.

Blessed are the tin can cardboard boxes
Blessed is the spirit that overcomes..

  93. M.... ....

oh man, Mothers of the disappeared is a brilliant song, one of their best and so emotional about those poor people that were stolen in the night.

But this song 'wave of sorrow' is amazing. I've never heard of it? How has this been discovered and what era is it? Is it from Joshu tree era?

  94. e.... ....

OMG this is amazing. What a great song, and they can afford to discard it. That says it all.

  95. T.... J....

I think this song would've fit well in the end of The Joshua Tree album. To replace Exit or Mothers of the Disappeared with this one would have made the album even better in my opinion. Didn't really care for those two.

  96. A.... C....

  98. m.... ....

questa e vecchia, non era usato

  99. A.... C....

Magari fosse stato questo il primo singolo del nuovo album.
