Traffic John Barleycorn (Must Die) Comments
My past brought me here.
Traffic...and...Ten Years After....the single two most egregiously underrated classic rock bands. Ever. If you listen closely to John Barleycorn Must Die...you can hear Jethro Tull. Either Tull influenced, Traffic, or vice versa. No matter. It's ALL good.
Steve windwood > mastered the art of music at the age of 14-15 yrs old with the Spencer Davis group and has made(for us)some of the greatest songs ever and they never get stale I
Really beautiful music. LISTEN to The Trees/Fairport/Steeleye Span/Incredible String Band/Pentangle , to name the best, all beautiful music
went to food lion yesterday, saw a 6 pack of nut brown ail. It sparked the memory of this song. So following the song, I bought it, made the oath, and it did die. If you can imagine after looking up the song I found it was about a nut brown bowl. shees, it was damn good though.
next time I'll listen to George Thorogood, one bourbon , one scotch, one beer.
Como dizemos aqui no Pará: ê musica pai d'égua!
Im looking for folk-writers, for blues, folk, and rock songwriting group. Can it be done again? Message me.
That flute is so fucking cool!!!!!
We all need a little barleycorn. The song is a metaphor for creating beer or whiskey. By far the most creative and lovely song from Traffic. They were an amazing group.
Sung by the same bloke who went on to have a huge 80's hit, 'Higher Love.' That man is Steve Winwood. Bet many don't know that.
está cambiando el aire!
I bought this album when it first came out. Still love it as much as ever, it's a classic.
Why why what did John do to be tied at the waist and strapped to a cart WHY
he drank :)
John barleycorn is a metaphor for grain, they buried grain in the ground, then it grew up again, then they cut it and tie it and take it to the barn and thresh it into grain and it gives life to everyone
AT A FIRST LISTENING I THOUGHT IT WAS A CAT STEVENS' S SONG......
It could have been... And S. Winwood did it!
Who influenced Stairway to Heaven?
Terry Reid,worth checking out.
This is the time I grew up.............
As classical flute folk tale music as Jethro Tull.
How versatile is Steven Winwood ? Up 'till this point he's mostly been cranking out white soul, blues, rock and now he helps to produce a stunningly amazing folk song. I hate him, the bastard. One person should not be so talented...
💙 what a beauty
Amazing how much I played this album ((1977-80); really taught me a lot. And I still will run lines through my head, not only from this song but the others on the album. But this song is my fav - love it.

We knew Steve Winwood in 1971. He was in our headphones.
My roommate had this album when I was a sophomore in college. We played it every morning upon rising for an entire year before going to class. I never got sick of it. Now, it brings back such vivid memories of days gone by. It actually gives me a profound sense of sadness, and I'm not sure why.
Caught this on sirius xm driving home and remembered how much I liked it.
fuerza natural...
John Barleycorn.Legendary performance.
And those vegans think they're so innocent.
What about John Barleycorn?
Murderers!
Pollen by Jeff Noon, anyone? 😀
One of the best albums of all time!!
Ancestral memories never really die...............
Happy Lammas!
Of the many versions of this song by various others, Traffic made the most applaudable one. Winwood's best ever concoction with the group.
Faintly - just faintly - reminiscent of Celtic band Lothlorien's version of Foggy Banks. What an amazing song JBMD is... one of the finest acoustic songs in rock.
Don't know what you said, but I agree
Grandes....
YOU CAN LISTEN TO THIS SONG IN THE "NIRVANA" MOVIE! :-)
Hermoso!!!!!!!!!
If you do not like this you can never possibly be my friend.
& Should be fucked sideways with a rusty rake...👊😎

Much more than one now, 71. From people who do not undertand anything
The rest of the alblum reached a critical mass. This was the magnus opus.
This song, much like "In the Court of the Crimson King" and "Lucky Man", has the ability to take me back in time...like, hundreds of years back in time!
True prog rock. That's why (they as a whole) aren't in the hof.
Imagine this as a western theme
Sampled on Fuerza Natural by Gustavo Cerati
Why in the world would someone even come to this page if they don't like the song or the band?
Hops, barley, and a bit of corn.
This song is a thousand generations old. .
134 times still great!
I fucking love this. I tried to write some profound verbs about the music and the talent and the pure musical feel , but it all sounded corny, so I fucking love this is what i came up with. I get lost in the feel, the layers, and the pure joy of great music..Cheers all..
How could anyone not like this?
Winwood...............
If we had some ham we could have ham and eggs if we had some eggs
55 dislikes....55 people are joking right????
There were three men come out of the west, their fortunes for to try
And these three men made a solemn vow, John Barleycorn would die
They've ploughed, they've sown, they've harrowed, thrown clods upon his head
Till these three men were satisfied John Barleycorn was dead
There's beer all in the barrel and brandy in the glass
But little Sir John, with his nut-brown bowl, proved the strongest man at last
They've let him lie for a long long time till the rains from heaven did fall
And little Sir John sprang up his head and so amazed them all
They've let him stand till midsummer's day and he looks both pale and wan
Then little Sir John's grown a long long beard and so become a man
There's beer all in the barrel and brandy in the glass
But little Sir John, with his nut-brown bowl, proved the strongest man at last
There's beer all in the barrel and brandy in the glass
But little Sir John, with his nut-brown bowl, proved the strongest man at last
They've hired men with the sharp-edged scythes to cut him off at the knee
They've rolled him and tied him around the waist, treated him most barbarously
They've hired men with the sharp-edged forks to prick him to the heart
And the loader has served him worse than that for he's bound him to the cart
So they've wheeled him around and around the field till they've come unto a barn
And here they've kept their solemn word concerning Barleycorn
They've hired men with the crab tree sticks to split him skin from bone
And the miller has served him worse than that for he's ground him between two stones
There's beer all in the barrel and brandy in the glass
But little Sir John, with his nut-brown bowl, proved the strongest man at last
There's beer all in the barrel and brandy in the glass
But little Sir John, with his nut-brown bowl, proved the strongest man at last
And the huntsman he can't hunt the fox nor loudly blow his horn
And the tinker he can't mend kettle nor pot without a little Barleycorn
Lyrics from the Fairport Convention version, slightly dfferent....
Fucking great
My parents had the album. Wasn't born until 1974
This song name reminds me of a friend who can't lay off the sauce
Check out Irish Rovers Barley Mow
Doesn’t get much better. The trio of Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood were amazing together. So wonderful to have YouTube to be able to hear my favorite tunes from those days, so long ago.
I love to sit at night and hear all my tunes on YouTube! The internet can be a horrible place but for me it's all about the music and sharing it! 1967 is my HIGH point in music! Creative! This is 1969! Chris Wood on flute was amazing!
chris wood is sublime on this track and the whole album really.
If there must be a "best" Traffic song, then this song will do fine...
The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys... ;)
@Anki Hansen no argument, Anki !
Y nunca me sentí tan bien.

Pertenece a los años de mi juventud, pero suena completamente atemporal. Una obra maestra
More woodblock!
Just parts of me i kill but not all of me i'm still me
Played this album so many times in the '70s the record skipped at the end of Freedom Rider.
Maybe the three men were the Rothschild's
No, they were the Seagrams.
Wow. This song is just outstanding. I love it every time I hear it.
