Tracy Chapman - Across The Lines Lyrics

Across the lines
Who would dare to go
Under the bridge
Over the tracks
That separates whites from blacks

Choose sides
Or run for your life
Tonight the riots begin
On the back streets of America
They kill the dream of America

Little black girl gets assaulted
Ain't no reason why
Newspaper prints the story
And racist tempers fly
Next day it starts a riot
Knives and guns are drawn
Two black boys get killed
One white boy goes blind

Across the lines
Who would dare to go
Under the bridge
Over the tracks
That separates whites from blacks

Choose sides
Or run for your life
Tonight the riots begin
On the back streets of America
They kill the dream of America

Little black girl gets assaulted
Don't no one know her name
Lots of people hurt and angry
She's the one to blame

Across the lines
Who would dare to go
Under the bridge
Over the tracks
That separates whites from blacks

Choose sides
Or run for your life
Tonight the riots begin
On the back streets of America
They kill the dream of America

    (A Travers Les Lignes)

    A travers les lignes
    Qui oserait passer

    Sous le pont

    Au delà des voies

Qui séparent les blancs des noirs

    Choisis ton camp

getting closer to thanksgiving, I end up thinking about stuff like this, why people can't just get along and be good to each other when we can and it's a lot easier than finding ways to hurt each other.

    P.... A....

  16. J.... H....

Always takes me back to 1980s Chicago. Timeless.

  17. M.... T....

    great song

  18. N.... ....

I feel like this song is too racially charged to have been written today. Nobody would dare tempt the sjw army today.

    N.... ....

Gotta cross the line few would dare to go.
The sjw is sure hurting and confusing alot of people. I think the worst crime their PC values corroborate on is robbing the individual of their artistic freedom.
In fact when you consider that by the dictionary- rascism is comprised of predjudice discrimination and antagonism its a wonder the sjw cannott comprehend their own tactic- which seems to me to be to discrimate antagonize and treat anyone not in their leauge with predjuce
    Covert rascism.

Tracy chapman. Bless you.and your time.

I had to leave my hometown/state to understand what 'color lines' were.

See, I'm from a certain area of the southeastern US, and I'm white, but there were Black and Mexican and German and Polish and Welsh and Italian and other "Races/Nationalities" living in the same area, side by side. We didn't see color; we didn't hear accent...we were all human and we were neighbors. We would visit each others' house; spend the night; eat their food at their table, and they would do the same with every other family. No matter who needed the help, the entire community jumped in to help them.

My grandmother (Bless her Soul) had four portraits on her living room wall: Jesus Christ, John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Robert F Kennedy. They hung on her wall for everyone to see until the day she died. I don't know what became of the pictures; I wasn't there to see what happened or who took them. I wish I had them today. She was a prime example of what the area was like.

I haven't been "home" in thirty years. Last time I went, I knew something was changing, and NOT for the better. I saw a couple of friends...young men of color (my age at that time)...and I hugged them; kissed their cheeks and got one in return, outside of the local supermarket. People stared and whispered, with expressions of disgust on their faces.

Last I hear, everyone I knew and loved had either moved away or died (I'm in my 60's, so age takes us all eventually) and only the ignorant bigots remain.

Makes me sad that a place as wonderful and color neutral and balanced in temperance could turn ugly and mean-spirited like it has become.

    I'll never go "home" again.

Where I live today, I work in a large retail store, and every single day, one of the first things I do when I go into the store, is to find and hug my friend Shaa, a young lady of color that I love like my own daughter. And a lot of people give us that same disgusted expression.

Know what? I don't care. I love Shaa and NO BODY is going to stop me from hugging her and telling her I love her. Same for my gay friends. If you can't stand to see me hug my black, Asian, Latino or Gay friends and tell them I love them...don't watch and don't listen...and know that you have my sympathy for not having a heart or soul.

"Choose sides" because being neutral only helps the oppressor so relevant for what's happening right now in USA the detention centres i.e concentration camps! So sad! Speak up people!

    H.... S....

AOC's remarks have been debunked. Those centers are not Concentration camps.

    Tracey Chapman = true legend

  85. N.... M....

it’s so sad to see america is the same , if not worse

    N.... M....

Lol it's not even close to the same. I've talked with people who lived through the riots and they described them like they were war veterans. Today it's all about hurt feelings and perceived injustice. You do the past and the people who went through it a great disservice by comparing it to how easy we have it today
Edit: changed "vets" to war veterans

    N.... M....

If only you could go back and see for yourself.. it's not the same at all.

  87. M.... M....

    2018 still in rotation

  88. S.... C....

Raw, pure. When do we understand that we, or our kids, cross the lines we arbitrarily draw?

  89. F.... E....

Could be America's anthem present day

    F.... E....

Sadly, human beings get in our own way. Over such pointless reasons.

    F.... E....

uh no racism is not the problem moron victim

    F.... E....

Same for Talkin 'bout a Revolution, or Mountains of Things. Heck, the whole album could be... maybe it's my difference in age but many of the songs seem even more relevant now than back 30 years ago.

    F.... E....

    of course!

    F.... E....

    On facts.

  90. D.... P....

One of my favorite albums of all time. Thank you kindly Tracy Chapman
