Trace Adkins - Til The Last Shot's Fired Lyrics

I was there in the winter of '64
When we camped in the ice at Nashville's doors
Three hundred miles our trail had lead
We barely had time to bury our dead
When the Yankees charged and the colors fell
Overton hill was a living hell
When we called retreat it was almost dark
I died with a grapeshot in my heart

Say a prayer for peace
For every fallen son
Set my spirit free
Let me lay down my gun
Sweet mother Mary I'm so tired
But I can't come home 'til the last shot's fired

In June of 1944
I waded in the blood of Omaha's shores
Twenty-one and scared to death
My heart poundin' in my chest
I almost made the first seawall
When my friends turned and saw me fall
I still smell the smoke, I can taste the mud
As I lay there dying from a loss of blood

Say a prayer for peace
For every fallen son
Set my spirit free
Let me lay down my gun
Sweet mother Mary I'm so tired
But I can't come home 'til the last shot's fired

I'm in the fields of Vietnam
The mountains of Afghanistan
And I'm still hopin', waitin' prayin'
I did not die in vain

Say a prayer for peace
For every fallen son
Set our spirits free
Let us lay down our guns
Sweet mother Mary we're so tired
But we can't come home 'til the last shot's fired
'Til the last shot's fired

[Choir:]
Say a prayer for peace (for peace)
For our daughters and our sons
Set our spirits free (set us free)
Let us lay down our guns

[Trace:]
Sweet mother Mary, we're so tired
But we can't come home (No we can't come home)

[Choir:]
'Til the last shot's fired

Yea but we have Liberals trying to divide us as a nation. The power is in unity. We have to unite and give the power back to the people and not the government. Vote liberals out. 2020 is the year to give the people the power back where it belongs. Trump 2020🇺🇸

"No one loves peace more than a soldier; for no one pays a greater price in order to preserve it." ~ Douglas MacArthur

@Richard Wheeler Thanks Richard for the quote. The version I used came from a group of Native American Indian combat veterans I met with almost 10 years ago during a July 4th PowWow in NC. I myself am 1/4 Cherokee, Eastern Band and was honored to meet these men and women that served our beloved nation.
As someone himself that has seen the horrors of war, I am still willing to fight for my country if need be, but pray every day that I won't have to again.
Though I doubt if I'll see it in my lifetime, perhaps peace will reign over our world... if we don't annihilate ourselves first.

  5. P.... P....

I pray for our troops and pray for my only son. Army strong Dad.

    2019, trying not to cry👇

  9. d.... b....

This song was written back before country turned against our fighting men and women. I still support them today myself no matter how the majority views them or me. Proud to be American and proud member of a fighting family. I only wish I could of done my part to serve lady liberty (turned away when I walked into recruiter 10 days after 911 health issues).

The Democrats need to listen closely!!

  17. J.... S....

I believe that 99.99999 percent of the people in the world want peace, and as much wealth and happiness as their sweat will provide. Why do the politicians and leaders resort to war, fought with the blood and lives of the common man. I guess I don't have the answers all I can do is Say a prayer for peace, Till the last shots fired. I hope I live to see that day.

  18. T.... M....

As the son of a Vietnam Marine i love this song and this is why i love country music and cant stand "popular" music. Trace Adkins and Darryl Worley and all country artists they pay tribute to those who fight for the flag and country and those that don't even care anymore

  19. C.... K....

I don't care who likes and dislikes Billy Ray Cyrus. When he sings Some Gave All, i felt my heart breaking for everyone who lost anyone in war. I can FEEL the respect he has for all the soldiers who fought for our freedom. Much love to Billy Ray Cyrus.

  20. C.... K....

Please forgive my spelling errors, hard to write when fighting through tears.

Both of my Grandfather's were at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. They noth made it off their vessels and helped their fellow men survive. I have both sets of their Dog tags, and i am do proud of them both for fighting for every man, woman and child and our freedom. I hope some day i can make it to Pearl Harbor to pay my respects to every man and woman who tragically lost their lives fighting for freedom around the world!!

  22. N.... E....

He makes you feel like he was there. God bless our America!

  23. e.... j....

Vote for the right people and keep your guns. Teach your children to be patriots. Don't let those men die in vain. Never

  24. N.... Y....

Happy memorial day everyone! Huge thank you and honor to those who've served!

I remember watching awards show back in 09 and can't remember anything but this performance that night. Absolutely and unequivocally freakin-ah-may-zing. I mean, I'm an emotional person I get it but that's not the case here. This performance is just that darn good.
Trace's vocals were mesmerizing and kept me hanging on every word as much so as the military clips playing on the backdrop. Only Trace's voice, perfect for this song.

Everything was absolutely perfect. The harmony, guitar picking, the accompanied arrangements, the video production, West Point Glee Club etc. Could have heard a pin drop it was that moving.

I'd so love to hear the thoughts from any of the the choir members that night in 2009

    Super cool

    c.... l....

I absolutely remember ONLY this song and this wonderful man for singing this. I can't get through it, ever, without crying my eyes out. So damn touching.

  31. C.... S....

  35. r.... r....

Thank all the warriors who allow me to be free and let me do as I please. I’ll never take that for granted. I’ll always be in debt to all the lives that made me free.

  36. F.... M....

Absolutely magnificent and meaningful performance! Moving!

  37. h.... ....

That instantaneous standing ovation is awesome!

  38. J.... J....

this CMA performance was in 2009,  that's when I became a monthly supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project. I was so moved by this that the next day I researched WWP and realized I had to be a part of it... for those of you reading this I also urge you to check out The Fisher House Foundation......https://www.fisherhouse.org/...help our Warriors and the families.

  39. J.... B....

  41. P.... 4....

My dad is an Army veteran. I fully support the men and women that have fought and are still fighting for our nation's freedom. God bless you and your families.

  42. M.... B....

    Badassery !!

  43. J.... S....

this is one of the best if not the best tribute to our men and women in service.

  44. c.... m....

why are they dressed like confederates

    c.... m....

@Meagsnan They were American soldiers because they were doing the most American thing possible. They were fighting for what they believed in. History is written by the victors that is why people paint them as traitors when in reality it was brother vs brother. In some cases whole families were fighting each other. Never forget that.

    c.... m....

@Meagsnan and America succeeded from British rule. If you abandon a good union, you're scum, fighting a tyrannical system is a different matter, and our opinions won't change their cause

    c.... m....

Here is a little known fact the largest statue at West point is of Robert e. Lee. General was recommended by tye Secretary of war to be the general of the union army. Lee did not want to fight his brother's. He told them no. Arlington national cemetery was general Lee home and before that it was George Washington's.

    c.... m....

@Meagsnan not traitors. Not a piece of crap like you

    c.... m....

chris mcguire lol that’s the West Point cadet uniform.

  45. L.... ....

My Grandfathers were in WW1 I had Uncles in WWII and Korea. My father was also in the Mediterranean in WW II. We have served in every war since the revolution in 1776. Including Nam, Iraq, and today. God Bless you Trace Atkins for your support.

  46. T.... C....

    Pray for that veterans family

    T.... C....

Wounded Warrior Project provides the best for those who serve.

  47. A.... G....

My heart breaks every time I listen to Trace Adkins sing his songs we must never forget our guys who died in Nam. Not ever

    A.... G....

Vietnam vets met a hostile domestic population upon their return. That is the lesson of the OPs opinion.

    A.... G....

Since 911 I hold our military in highest regard. Thank you for what you do for us. This song is in my top 5

    A.... G....

crgaillee they’d be proud of your military still fighting for peace🤙🏻🌹🇺🇸

    A.... G....

    I will never forget!

    A.... G....

And shill we never disrespect our soldier like some did to our nam vets when they came home i heard story from my uncle and he still has his demons he deals with to this day

  48. A.... v....

Everytime when I get to hear this song I get goosbumps and tears in my eyes. Respect for any soldier fighting for every ones freedom!

  49. M.... ....

this is one of the reasons I watch the CMA's and not the Grammy's , VMA's , Oscars , or any of that other garbage...

    M.... ....

Same here. You will never see anything like this on those shows. If you ever do, it's because they've been shamed into it and are trying to cover their asses with some half-hearted, fake, pretentious pageantry.

    M.... ....

    The CMAs have become MTV.
