Townshend, Pete - A Friend Is A Friend Lyrics

When eyes meet in silence
A pact can be made
A lifelong alliance
That won't be betrayed
Won't be betrayed

Be friendly
Be friendly now
Be friendly

A friend is a friend
Nothing can change that
Arguments, squabbles
Can't break the contract
That each of you makes
Till the death, to the end
To live your future
It's in the hands of your friend

Be friendly
Be friendly now
Be friendly
Be friendly now
Be friendly
Be friendly now
Be friendly yeah

A promise is a promise
A handshake will seal it
No amount of discussion
Can ever reveal it
Commitment forever
To borrow or lend
To live your future
It's in the hands of your friend

Be friendly
Be friendly now
Come on
Be friendly
Be friendly now
Be friendly
Be friendly now
Be friendly

When eyes meet in silence
A pact can be made

A lifelong alliance
That won't be betrayed
Won't be betrayed
You need a mate

When facing the end
But what is the fate

Now facing my friend
Facing my friend yeah

Well this is my friend yeah
Be friendly
Be friendly now
Be friendly
Be friendly now
Be friendly
Be friendly now
Be friendly

A friend is a friend
Nothing can change that
Arguments, squabbles
Can't break the contract
That each of you makes
Till the death, to the end
To live your future
It's in the hands of your friend yeah

Be friendly
Be friendly
Be friendly now
Be friendly
Be friendly now

    'Mr stark?'

For some odd reason, maybe it was the time, but I always relate this music video to a clive barker story called, the skins of the fathers. HOw Gruesome.

  6. C.... H....

Just finished reading Pete's autobiography, also read Roger's at the same time.

So I was interested in the music Pete made towards the end.

    And it's shit.

Tommy, Live at Leeds, Who's Next and Quad are his legacy. This is poor.

"A life-long alignment of boats, beans and trains. Boats, beans and trains."

  8. C.... F....

why does the Iron Man walk off the cliff???

    C.... F....

    faster than walking?

  9. C.... S....

    Love It!!!

  10. B.... B....

i'm confused. so the kid trapped the robot and buried it too and he's happy that it's getting buried yet a friend song plays and after the robot tries to get out the boy touches the robot like they're the best of friends? either i'm not understanding something or the kid is a dick

    B.... B....

Bob Bobete Yes the clip is confusing but you have to know the album. The John Lee Hooker song I eat heavy metal, then Roger Daltry sings Dig At that point in the story the iron man has been eating cars and transformers off utility poles and this caused trouble for the village people so they dig the giant hole to trap and bury the iron man, but when he falls in the boy realizes the iron man was his friend. This is where Friend is a friend comes in. You have to know the album or better yet see the whole video. I have been looking for it for 30 years. Just this clip is rare. The Who had the video going behind them while they played when I saw them but I don't think anyone knew what it was for sure yet because the Iron Man Album wasn't out yet. I know, confusing.

    B.... B....

@The Last Rebel Show thanks for sharing that Rebel...yes the clip confuses me to. And I didn't know there was a movie. Obviously different things happen out of sequence.

    B.... B....

Colin Fletcher The only reason I knew was because when I saw The Who in Oakland Ca they had this movie playing behind them at one point but it’s been over 25 years ago so I really don’t remember much. I do love the WHOs Iron Man album though. 👍

Commitment forever, to borrow or lend. Deliver your future into the hands of your friend.

  12. R.... A....

THEY  SHOULD  HAVE  USED  THE  MUSIC, TO  MAKE  THE  MOVIE!

    R.... A....

The film is better off not having music just like what early 2000s Disney did. Did better as a sort of 1960s B movie.

  13. S.... T....

    Joe I sure remember it!

  14. J.... I....

Who remembers this song by Pete townshend?
    #petetownshend #thewho #afriendisafriend

    J.... I....

+Joe Izzo i certainly  do since most people of  my generation[no  pun intended!!] seems to only know THE WHO  from the  CSI series    I'VE   always loved this song  and of course the  IRON giant  was one of my favourite   stories as a  wee lad!!   ENJOY!!

    J.... I....

Who doesn't!!!??? Pete is one of my Heros!! ❤

    J.... I....

Oh maybe ANYBODY THATS FUCKING HERE

    J.... I....

    I do!!! Still a genius!

    J.... I....

Reese Winkel? What's it like to be cunt??

  15. S.... A....

When I was a boy I heard this song the first time. This is the most powerful song about friendship I've ever heard. "A friend is a friend, nothing can change that". To be friends with good people and be good to them is to know Jesus.

    S.... A....

Jesus is dead. Maybe better just to follow the golden rule regardless of religion.

  16. 4.... ....

    CHRIST THIS SONG SUCKS

  17. j.... ....

when i saw theWho in Boulder, Colrado, 30th Anniversary tour, under a full moon - on 'shrooms - ther Who took a break, petre did his songs - face ther face, trough boys, a friend is a friend-sounded just like the record - he had the original singers, etc. i love him.

  18. T.... ....

    I remember this.

  19. N.... M....

great kids movie(an adult can make it through) wish had stayed his petes ides WB$ wins....

  20. M.... J....

It was a book by Ted Hughes.

  21. d.... ....

He was "executive producer" for it so I guess he got a piece of the cake

  22. M.... ....

Well I hope whoever did that The Iron Giant movie paid Pete Townshend some royalties!

    M.... ....

Warner Brothers was looking to bring this version to the big screen and had already optioned it, but Brad Bird had a different approach and created his animated movie, which Pete Townshend had an executive producer credit on, and he enjoyed the movie.

  23. J.... B....

Moral: You can't keep a good (Iron) man down.

  24. J.... B....

Sounds a bit like Bill Withers "Lean on me".

  25. J.... B....

This could be about he and Rog....easily.

  26. J.... B....

Welll....I tend to agree w/ you there but he's had his share of cheese in his later solo projects...But he's 90% and that's DAMN good for any songwriter.

  27. A.... P....

    Simply He can't.

  28. C.... ....

When I saw the Who do the 20th anniversary of Tommy in New York he did this song and it was a real highlight. Great album and I agree a highly underrated album.

@11xzxzxz Pete: The greatest rock songwriter and performer + Roger: The greatest vocalist and frontman + John: The greatest bassist of all-time + Keith: The greatest rock drummer of all-time = THE GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL-TIME!! Any questions?

    S.... D....

So... Who is the greatest rock band of all time? Just want to be sure. ;)

  48. R.... A....

MY ANSWER TO ALL THIS UN-GODLY HOLY BOOK BURNING AND SO FORTH!

  49. C.... F....

    Pete is a great hero

  50. C.... F....

    Pete is a hero.

  51. D.... ....

    @scartissue94 No worries man, it's a great song :)

  52. D.... ....

@scartissue94 Warner Brothers, Disney, whatever. The story it's based on was straight from British poet Ted Hughes. Even Pete Townsend would be proud to admit that.

  53. S.... D....

Can Pete write a bad song?...I think not...

  54. S.... ....

Pete has an executive producer credit on The Iron Giant.

  55. T.... H....

    highly underatted lbum. THX PETE!

  56. D.... ....

This isn't about the Iron Giant, it's about a book by Ted Hughes called the Iron Man. Disney later made their film based on the same book, but they changed the name because they didn't want it conflicting with the comic book character.

  57. L.... G....

My son (Pete; who I've always believed was secretly named after Mr. Townshend) LOVES this video, and we have watched it about 50 times (I'm sure more will come). I'm so glad Pete Townshend was so into the Iron Giant!

  58. J.... ....

Shoulda just stopped after the release of 'Who Are You'.

    Haha

  59. E.... E....

This is an incredibly cheesy song and incredibly cheesy video...but I fell for it all the same.

  60. E.... E....

"This album was based on the 1968 novel The Iron Man: A Children's Story in Five Nights by ted hughes..."

    Sylvia Plath's husband.

  61. C.... ....

Those two Who-songs are great :)

  62. C.... L....

yea i love all the who, and petes solo stuff this is not really rock n roll but its still a great song.

  63. S.... M....

Thanks for the post! Have this on the Iron Man soundtrack but never saw the movie. I love this song.

  64. S.... G....

    You love this shit.
