Townes Van Zandt - Lover's Lullaby Lyrics
Dreams that have flown down the hall
Tears that were sown on despair
Summer's turned Fall
It don't matter at all
When I wake and find you lying there
Blues gonna dance through the sky
Time's gonna roll soft as rain
Sigh after sigh is gonna pass by and by
When I gaze into your brown eyes again
Ah love is gonna fly on the wind
All the things I've seen
And the places that I've been
Don't mean a thing since I found you
Since I've won your love somehow
Are these plans that I keep makin'
Not to lose you
Sleep Babe 'till the moon slips away
I'm hopin' all you're dreamin' comes true
When you rise with the day
I might not have too much to say
But you know that doesn't mean
Ah you know that doesn't mean
That I don't love you
All the things I've seen
And the places that I've been
Don't mean a thing since I found you
All that matters now
Since I've won your love somehow
Are these plans that I keep makin'
Not to lose you
Dreams that have flown down the hall
Summer's turned Fall
It don't matter at all
When I wake and find you lying there
Sweet silence and soft auburn hair
Sweet silence and soft auburn hair

Townes Van Zandt Lover's Lullaby Comments
Whoever he wrote this song for is the luckiest girl in the world. I would love someone to write a song for me like this.
Haunting. He wrote good songs. He played his songs well. Some people end up defeated by their demons.
This tune's an arrow through the heart
Im so lucky to have shared so much time with my true love before she was taken. Our little girl is three now and ill be damned if she doesn't know every good thing about her.thanks towmes for the nostalgia
I was speechless first time i heard this song. Im still speechless now 15 years later
I discovered Townes a few weeks ago and my soul and emotional perspective has been enriched in ways I could never imagine. Every song he sings has depth and honesty. You can tell that he was a true singer because his voice conveys a belief in the words. Its like he truly lived the words of his songs.
This is my only youtube comment ever but I can't help it. This is the greatest song ever,
A remnant of America's past.
No voice makes me cry quite as much as Townes'. It makes me miss someone I love so very much.
Greatest singer songwriter ever
Townes once said this was his favorite love song that he wrote... it’s definitely one of mine
The best!
where can i find this version? anyone?
" No Deeper Blue" by Townes Van Zandt????
@Leif Vidar Gullstad i love this song and have that version i love acoustic more so this version is what I'm searching for. i wish this one was not so hard to find
Love u Tany💜
Love him and his hen
Fuck...
BESCHWER DICH BEI YOU TUBE, NICHT BEI MIR!
I think I've figured out.. People keep arguing about whether Townes or Dylan was better.. I don't like to think about artists as being better or worse, but I do think that Townes really, really knew what it was like to be down. And he was VERY good at putting emotion into his songs.
Un gran poeta y un gran músico, gracias.
This is a beautiful version - where is it from?
All of you who wish him well need to do a little research. He died from from cardiac arrythmia brought on by years of drug abuse in 1997
@Dennis Rasmussen Are you kidding me? "All of you who wish him well need to do a little research."
@Dennis Rasmussen Your words, and not even you want to stand by them
@Ryan Lynch :)
sarah billings can't believe I'm responding to you trolls. the intent was simply to inform those that "wish him well" that it was a little late since he's dead...
Good grief dude, now I'm a TROLL?? Honestly, how can you justify calling names like we are in 3rd grade? Maybe you chose the wrong words to say what you wanted to say in your original comment, but to now sink to the level of name calling? GROW UP
What really disgusts me more than anything regard Townes is that I went this long without ever hearing anything about him! I was born in 1971 so he was well alive during my lifetime. Internet has exposed many artists to me that I'd have never heard of otherwise. The other day I was coming home from work and I heard Don Williams and Emmy Lou Harris singing If I Needed You. I googled it up and long story short, I became a Townes Van Zandt just like that. I've been listening to his music all week long. It's a pity shame he's no longer with us and even a bigger shame that I was 26 years old when he passed and had no idea he even existed then. I do think that I can appreciate his music better now than I would have then, so in the end I'm very thankful we have his music preserved so that people like me can continue to appreciate it. What a gift he left behind!
Don't feel bad about not finding him sooner. Part of his appeal is his cult status. If he was a mainstream artist, we wouldn't enjoy him nearly as much. He would be just another money-making performer singing sad songs. This way, he is afforded an appreciation born of sincerity and start realism. Like early Bob Dylan.
I totally agree with you, I'm french and I think Townes is the greatest singer and songwriter of his generation, I love him so much, I'm listening his music every week, he's a true poet.I think Paradise is much cooler since Townes came in...
Louis-Ferdinand BARDAMU I read that you were French my friend that I was very close with even taught me the guitar....was friends with Townes and in 89-90 he signed with New Rose recordings...Calvin Russell of course I new him as Russ he went to Paris the first night 7000 people he and his band on stage stated he was so shocked at the love the folks had shown he was afraid to adjust his amp. Townes taught Calvin a education in songwriting...The song that started it was A Crack in Time ....anywho welcome to great mans words of life ...hoping I'm not a bother to you Russ spent most of 20 yrs over there...Goodness and Grace and Happiness...always ol man way down in TX... jd
Townes and Calvin Russell were great friends....they did a duo Watin around yo die I believe they bought new they were I'll at the time ......Goodness Grace and Happiness many more of there music out there...Happy you found it ...ol man way down in TX....jd
What? I just found him yesterday! Been on straight on repeat since then- you mean to tell me he's already dead?
he makes me miss places i never been
Townes never did receive the fame & recognition he so richly deserved. Maybe he will now that he's gone.
He never really cared for fame and recognition, either. Townes played Carnegie Hall once, but there were too many people for him - he liked his small clubs like the Old Quarter in Houston much more.
When he lived in Nashville, his wife tried to convince him that he should just ring at the door of someone like a Johnny Cash and ask them if they´re interested in singing one of his songs; but Townes didn´ do that.
omg my heart is breaking for him. love his poetry. this is just one of many i have listened to tonight from this great artist. RIP.
So beautiful. Perfection
Jack Elliott told me you never drop over to towns house with out his ok. Liked his privacy.

Thanks!
Last two lines in second verse are reversed.

Perfect love song ... Not too sentimental but heartfelt, threadbare, and just beautiful. Thank you Townes ...
Townes was a beautiful artist, and a fine poet we are lucky to share his pain and love. our setting sun.
Everyone with a soul who listens to this and many of his songs has to feel something! Hits close to home for me!.
The emotions are so raw in this song; it's hard to listen to. Townes never gave us anything but honesty and truth.
@Susan Jones "raw" is the new black..;/
Well said
Songs just so beautifull it hurts. Townes, I miss you my friend. And remembered you shall be.
The despair is so vivid that one could easily have seen that Townes was racing down into oblivion at breakneck speed. In the end, it was so. Sad, profoundly sad.
you are so right.you can feel so much pain in the song.
Victor Edwards when I was in that state townz was my buddy ✊
I don't know, boys. This just sounds like a really beautiful song that he wrote to sing his love to sleep. Fuck I love Townes.
Freakin awesome
this music makes your life better and feel bad at the same time.
I always loved this song but now it just makes me cry
sizzlington I cry when I listen too, but they are tears of appreciation and inspiration
Has this man ever written a bad song?
Yes, he did, but I'm going to embarrass his memory by naming them. Fortunately the labels had better sense than to publish them.
MrMartinnJ he sold them all to Bob Dylan
Honestly can't stand his first album, but that was the producers mistakes. He also had a few later ones that don't do it for me. But, beyond these few I agree, its not just they are for the majority not bad songs, it is that they are absolutely amazing songs.
this song is fucking incredible. i can't put it on without listening to it on repeat for two hours at a time.
Same!
It's very similar in it's chord choices and cyclical structure to Helpless by Neil Young, which has the same effect on me....
Sleep babe till the moon slips away
I'm hoping all your dreaming comes true
When you rise with the day
I might not have too much to say
But you know that doesn't mean
that I don't love you
Love the way he wrote, not afraid to be direct.
Still Love Townes, and hate that bitch this song reminds me of.
God bless you Townes...."sweet silence and soft auburn hair" just lovely
greedy bastard
Just good. Sooo good.
I wish I had half of the talent this man had...
Boom.. great song...
Mystery solved (again!): The problem is a mistaken track listing on the back of the CD. Gave a listen yesterday and track 4 is indeed "Lover's Lullaby". :)
I'm not sure why mine is different either. It's not an import, as far as I can tell.... Oh well, I guess if I want to hear this version of "Lover's Lullaby", I'll have to come here; so double thanks for uploading it!!!! :)
Never mind, I think I found it: The Highway Kind, track four. My version of the cd has "A Song For" instead, also great - and heartbreaking. Oh why oh why couldn't they have included both!!?? (the greedy girl in me wants to know... )
At a loss for words... Thank you so much for posting this. Where is this version from?
something tells me we shouldnt be eating Chickens. They are so cute! Great song!
this is good... damn good!
Thank you for posting this, eggcetrafarms.
It's the romanticest song ever.
