Townes Van Zandt - Flyin' Shoes Lyrics
Days full of rain
Skys comin' down again
I get so tired
Of these same old blues
Same old song
'fore I be tyin' on
My flyin' shoes
Flyin' shoes
Till I be tyin' on
My flyin' shoes
Spring only sighed
Summer had to be satisfied
Fall is a feelin' that I just can't lose.
I'd like to stay
Turn the green water
To white and blue
Flyin' shoes
Flyin' shoes
Till I be tyin' on
My flyin' shoes
The mountain moon
Forever sets too soon
Bein' alone is all the hills can do
Alone and then
Her silver sails again
And they will follow
In their flyin' shoes
Flyin' shoes
They will follow in their
Flyin' shoes
Days full of rain
Skys comin' down again
I get so tired
Of the same old blues
Same old song
Baby, it won't be long
Till I be tyin' on
My flyin' shoes
Flyin' shoes
Till I be tyin' on
My flyin' shoes

Love this mans music!
A true Texas word smith!
Interesting pictures of gal in the video. Wish I knew more about her.

Like listening to god speak.
Townes was a beautiful singer songwriter. We had his poignant lyrics at my partner''s funeral - "shake the dust off of your wings and the tears out of your eyes" Townes was a man who loved..
A beautiful line from townes
Full of melancholy but at the same time makes everything feel like it will be alright because one way or another it all works out in the end.
Thanks, Nick Perkins!
Beautiful. This should be my funeral song
Fall is a feeling that I cant lose. ..
Beautiful. TVZ flew away in those shoes and now there is no one left to fill them...
The first song I sang with my father when I was 3 years old... Every time I listen to this wonderfull song I remember my dad gone too soon...
Thank you and rip Townes, you were a genius and a true poet!
I love you daddy and I miss you so much...
(sorry for my english, I'm a french guy.)
Days full of rain
Same old blues
Have to agree with Matt Stefon, this gem is a wonderful exception to so many songs on the generally overly-produced Townes Van Zandt studio albums (NOT Townes' fault). The mouth harp intro, and the piano accompaniment are exquisite! By the way, Lyle Lovett sang this very song at a memorial for TVZ--his rendition is extraordinarily moving!
No good can ever come from having pictures of the artist in the video
Lol and I just wrote the opposite yet I agree w u too
best Song ever written
very few writers get it but TVZ nails it every time. stark, deep, and yet a glimmer of hope. we will never get out of this world alive but is that such a bad thing?
Fantástico !
I like just Townes and his guitar best. ❤

Last week my best friend shot himself. Townes makes so much sense today .till we meet again old friend. You fucking asshole
My last friend in the world killed herself too. I love her. I miss her, but I'm still VERY angry at her for leaving me all alone in the world...In other words, I know how you feel.
@Same Old Thing it fucking sucks, we talked daily leading up to his death and he never said a word about anything bothering him. All he had to do was call. Fair thee well
Townes > Dylan. Don't @ me.
Total disenchantment to say the least, I can relate a lot.
one of his best
The king of all country Imo. George Strait a close second.
sorry but George Strait didn't write any of his music without help. Dean Dillon wrote most of it.
Absolutely beautiful. Townes was one of a kind
Hauntingly beautiful.
Beautiful song!
The bridge icon
This was played at my cousins ash spreading after he killed himself, it was one of his favorite songs.....I miss you chris.....I hope you've got your flying shoes....
Cheers mate. All my love for the soul of your cousin...
D3vil's Advocate more❤️& power

One of his best. And the production blows me away.
Happy Birthday, Townes!
Thank you for these words.
I want this song to be played at my funeral...
Denis CHAUVIN Me too....
I was there when he played to a small audience in a hotel in Perth, Scotland. He was the brilliant soul that he was.
Amazingly beautiful arrangement. And photos to match.
A man who bared his heart and soul through his music..
A songwriter greatly underrated as true genius always is.. x
Townes toured the UK with another very underrated song writing genius that was the late great Jackie Leven to many great songs and albums to mention
He wrote a song about Townes
Called Townes at the Borderline ( a London venue )
https://youtu.be/lGWW9UpK_PM
but also check out the other 200 plus songs just on YouTube alone
You wont be disappointed.
Jackie talked aboi3Townes at many gigs my favourite quote
Audience member To Townes
Why dont you sing any happy songs?
Townes replied
These are the Happy songs..
Ah man, love Townes. Wish he was still with us and sober going around the world with his songs and stories. Great Song from the great man. Thanks for posting.
Listening to this at 04:30 in the morning after staying up all night
AMP a great time to listen ...3:00 am -4:30 am is the quietest most peaceful time of day
The perfect time
If there is a more depressing son of a blue balled bitch than Townes Vanzant I'll stand on his coffee table in my cowboy boots and tell him so.
Very beautiful man and song writer. I met him by chance in a dive bar in Nashville. He was there listening to Steve Earl (before Steve became a recording artist).
7 more idiots.
Steve Earle "Townes was the best lyricist ever, and I'll stand on Bob Dylans coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." so true
Um no. Townes is a great, but Dylan is in a whole different universe. He's dealt with poetry in so many forms, and can stand among the best writers (non musical) of his generation and beyond. Townes is a better than decent lyricist, and a great singer/songwriter with a lot of soul. And Steve Earle doesn't have shit on either one, so he's not one to judge.
Agreed. Dylan is a different class...or just different,,,but it doesn't matter this bloke is good
@Christian Berman Amen. Townes's best songs rival Bob's best, but Bob has so MANY of them, and so many styles and moods, and better melodies, and covers so many subjects, and so many different kinds of life's dramas. Towne's songs seem to fit into a certain emotional niche....and he does it heartbreakingly wonderfully. But, as tom Waits said, Bob Dylan is like a planet to be explored......
@Shredward 666 seriously??? Cash wrote 2 or 3 simplistic country songs..not even in the same world
It was Dylan's celebrity that disturbed TVZ. He avoided such. BTW...he told Earl, " I've met Dylan's bodyguards...you're not getting anywhere near that coffee table!"
Townes, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson.. Something about these guys really touches that sweet dark spot inside.
this song gives me chills... thank you Townes.
if this song don't move you your not alive
20 Years ago Townes passed away. No one will ever fill his (flyin') shoes.
After I first heard Flyin' Shoes about 20 years ago it became MY song. Some couples have an "our song"...I only have a "my song". Above is it, for the last 20 years, just as much now as ever.
blitzen trapper does an absolute gem of a cover of this great song
Lost dog street band performs fantastic covers of townes. Nothin', lungs, waiting around to die to name a few. I'd love to see them do this, if they haven't already
Why is it every time i go on Youtube it seem that TVZ is the first singer songwriter i go to? Answers on a postcard please
Day's full of rain. Skies comin down again. I get so tired of these same old blues.. It's heartbreaking to listen to Townes's songs! But I just can't get enough of them! He's just a pure genius! I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't listen to these songs! Probably Top myself, and I really mean that! I miss him dearly!
I love this song... but the video was creepy as fuck! :p
I usually agree with the sentiment that Townes's studio albums are overproduced to hell, but this song stands out in contrasts as particularly well done.
The whole album "Flyin´ Shoes" is very well done instrumentally.
Mostly the first album, agreed
this song really stands out with the production indeed!
My view is, his greatest songs--those constituting the album My Mother the Mountain, along with Rake, Flying Shoes, and Waiting 'Round to Die--could not BE overproduced enough to obscure their brilliance as songs. The rest, not as much.
Right on
Wrong. All of Townes' stuff is perfect.
What a great songwriter he was....a true artist and a lost soul!
Love him even in Hawaii he's the man. True lost soul, but art we all. Kaia j.
crazy that this song is about him doing heroin.
no the song is not about him doing Heroin. It is about two soldiers during the Civil war, one from the South and one from the North that were laying throughout the night, dying just feet away from each other. At least that is what he said it was about.
When he had to hit the road gigging , he say " better put on my flying shoes" well, that's what I heard.
Deathfalconvision crazy uv nothing
Positive too point out
my time to put on my flyin' shoes
spectacular
Stunning
07.März Happy Birthday rip Brother
A poet. Keats, Byron, Poe, Shelley......Van Zandt.
*cringe*
Few if any artist in modern history so perfectly encapsulates the duality of MAMMAL consciousness.
Whoa..."MAMMAL," eh? Could a chipmunk relate?
it's my time to put on my flyin shoe's
would planet earth be a better experience for everyone if everyone was as insightfull and immature as townes?i dont know, just feelin really down today.
Yeah, I feel that question. It would be better in lots of ways but maybe much worse in others...in any case it's fascinating how so many creative people are anything but artists when it comes to living.
I'm pretty sure you meant mature, eh mate?
One of his best. Used to do it. Not as well as this, but better than he did when drunk. Still, poetry.
Being alone is all the hills can do.
Scott Sciortino That's my favorite line too.
sure ya did, sport
Wouldn't matter if towns was passed out drunk you still wouldn't play it better. No offense brother.
makes me cry
Me too!
You have to think, "Who are the 3 Miserable ppl that Disliked this Video" lol
@Dennis Bryant aliens , but stupid ones.
Fool, you are. Good tune though.
It's now almost twenty. They're the ones who bear the heaviest cross.
Great song, he has many more as well, dig in people.
Love it! I use to listen to this song while walking on my countryside in Spain. Walking through old oaks trees, at autumn....this is really universal music.
John Silver agree
Beautiful song
His greatest.
at least we have his words.
A Masterpiece by a true great,he set the bar very high few if any will be up to it.
gratefuloldtiger lest they fall from above, fren
There is so much deep sentiment shared among those of us who listen to Townes' haunting music. We all know the mind spaces he so artfully painted. It is tragic that that we are all children of the music, all of us, all over the world, yet we we bring so much senseless, stupid suffering down upon each other. Well, maybe that's the source of the irony Townes revealed. I never met you, Sir, but I would have been so proud to call you friend.
raymond hatton ditto..I'm now 56
I agree 100%
nicely said i hate when they say townes is depressing . its the part of life thats the truth

Beautiful and positive song... Makes your soul fly to overcome difficulties... ;-)
When my wife Anita died on the 6th of April 2010 this song played all day long at our house.
Just fabulous!
You are so right! I sat in silence this morning 630am after listening to "Nothin"!
I leave this on a couple vids but.. Townes is the only artist other than Paul McCartney and John Lennon (only a couple songs), who as ever brought a tear to my eye.. Almost all his songs can, they just hit you..
He may have been different compared to other musical artists throughout all of history but he was very talented. He should probably be ranked with Mozart and Baba Allauddin Khan instead of Guy Clark, with all respect to Guy's immense talent.
One of my all time favorite songs from one of my all time favorite albums . . . Townes was a true American treasure . . . no . . . a true treasure to all humanity. One of the greatest song writers I have ever know to have existed
Wonderful song I first heard on the second Rumer album and went and checked out the original. One of my top ten all time songs now
Amazing what great music can bring out in a person. Thanks for the post
I really needed this right now. Thank you Townes, and thank you to whoever posted this.
I agree so much With you. Kindly Aud Bente
A song so serious, lonely and real. Yet so beautiful Thank you
Beautiful & Heart-Wrenching.
Thank You Townes.
Beautiful video for this song. Thanks

There has never been a better song written. This captures everything that is deep and meaningful.
Incredible.
The master of songwriting. Inspires all.
