    Simon wow

  11. C.... ....

I adore both bands as equal, I just love the fact that Toto have the stones to play and pull this song off live!

  12. p.... c....

Toto are such great musicians. The original is better but this really captures the feel of the original.

    Michael Cera on the drums.

  14. C.... ....

didnt know toto was a steely dan tribute band lolz

    C.... ....

CSFLChampion Well, given that both David Paich and Jeff Porcaro played on Steely Dan records, their music is pretty much in the bands’ DNA.

  20. C.... B....

the best band ever. simon and luckather incredible in this song

  21. C.... K....

Good cover. By no means an easy song to re-create. It is obvious these guys are really good musicians --as musician would concur.

  22. W.... S....

    simon, the wizzard! ;-)

  23. A.... F....

not bad. its probably the best cover of the original by steely dan. but still not up to snuff to the original written by Donald Fagan and Walter Becker of Steely Dan. Denny Dias just had more nimble fingers and skunk baxter was great second guitarist on the recording. Yeah the toto guitarist is one of the greats, plays faster than Dias and Baxter, and this really rocks at the end, but i like the more nuanced original by the dan. the once great lead singer sounds not so good here. Fagan not known for his voice sounds better on the original too. After this album Steely Dan was just Becker and Fagen and they'd call in session musicians to record. Donald hated playing live in the 1970's. but with the dan's comeback in 1993 Fagan and his several touring bands have been quite active.

    A.... F....

I say some of the 'bootleg' version from the 1974 'Pretzel Logic' tour are really at least as good as this one (the live at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium/Drunken intro by Jerome Aniton and the one from 'Memphis Blues Again').

  24. r.... s....

Do The Steelies do any Toto covers? No, of course not.

    r.... s....

No of course not . Spot on observation. Toto's brilliance is their ability to do everything from the likes of Hendrix through to the Beatles. Dan write great songs, but have never made any attempt to diversify.

    r.... s....

Are you saying that Steely Dan write the same song over and over? What do you mean they 'never made an attempt to diversify'?

    r.... s....

If you listen back to the entire Dan catalogue followed by Toto's, there's no comparison. Dan are a top, top band, no argument, but nowhere near as versatile in terms of genre as Toto, nor do they ever attempt anything by anyone else, not that I'm that into covering other bands material, and yet this version of Bodhishattva blows away Dan's own version. Also, Dan are as dull as dishwater live (saw them first ever UK gig in Manchester), conversely Toto fantastic to this day. It's not a competition, they are just different bands, but with Dan touring later this year as one of my mates said, he'd rather see the local tribute band for excitement than the real thing. Another mate says yep, but at least the amazing Doobies (my other all time fave band) are on the same ticket so they'll make it a fun evening. Says it all really.

  25. l.... d....

tony spinner was the best background singer toto ever had !

  26. M.... T....

Luke said that they all had a bad night here.. I really want to hear them play this song at some other concert!

  27. D.... D....

A number of members of Toto played for Steely Dan.

    D.... D....

+Dino Di Lucido sure...i mean, if you can get porcaro, you take him ! anyway, whenever steely dan goes on tour, they just ask: who wants...!? and the crème de la crème of jazz and studio musicians yell: present !

  28. R.... J....

    That was fun!

  29. M.... N....

This is better than any Steely Dan version?
    Your joking right?

    M.... N....

No, I love Dan, but this wipes the floor with their version by a zillion miles, basically because Toto are just the very best musicians around, bar none.

    M.... N....

I would never say that. This is a good version, and I respect any band that dares to cover the Dan in the first place. But IMO Steely Dan has produced some of the finest versions of this tune during their very first 'comeback tours', back in 1993 when they had Drew Zingg as their Lead Guitarist. The 'bootleg' 1974 live at Santa Monica civic Auditorium, w/ the original band + Jeff Porcaro + Mike McDonald and Royce Jones is great too (the one w/ the infamous drunken introduction by Roadie/Equipment truck driver Jerome Aniton). Another killin one is from the 1974 bootleg 'Memphis Blues Again'. Both these are on you tube.

    M.... N....

    Dan is better. Easily

    M.... N....

@Kevin Carmichael I agree. This is great stuff but it almost sounds off key and the vocals aren't cutting it. That said, the drummer rocks.

  30. T.... H....

    Most playful snaredrumsound ever!!!

  31. S.... A....

    All Hail Lord Lukather

  32. M.... ....

Holy shyte! Well done. That snappy snare gives me a woodie.

  33. j.... b....

    Now that's music
    AWESOME 😎🎶

  34. s.... n....

Woow, better than steely dans version. Funny I had no clue what the hell they were saying when i first heard this song. Then i looked it up.. Lol... Bodhisattva. Still doesn't make sense to me, shining your Japan and sparkling your China isn't a bodhisattva supposed to be a super spiritually enlightened person with no desire for worldly possessions or am I missing the metaphor? Fk it, its still an awesome song by steely dan and toto just kicked it in the ass too.!

    s.... n....

    @silvano nieves

    Bodhisattva
Would you take me by the hand
    Bodhisattva
Would you take me by the hand
    Can you show me
    The shine of your Japan
    The sparkle of your china
    Can you show me

    Bodhisattva
    Bodhisattva

I'm gonna sell my house in town
    Bodhisattva
I'm gonna sell my house in town
    And I'll be there
    To shine in your Japan
    To sparkle in your China
    Yes I'll be there
    Bodhisattva

I interpret it as a westerner looking to embrace Buddhism and desires enlightenment. To put it into historical context, eastern religious groups like the Hare Krishnas were gaining popularity back then, and Don and Walt were likely poking fun at the rubes who fell for it.

The "shine of your Japan" and "sparkle of your china" is the allure of oversimplified Eastern culture. It's all very attractive on a surface level. Shine and sparkle. Notice how the first china is lowercase.

Another key line is "I'm gonna sell my house in town" which implies they have another house if not many and are wealthy.

Notice how the person wants enlightenment, yet the song is played at frantic pace, almost as if he's in a hurry to achieve it.

    s.... n....

Well damn John, thanks your insight on this song. Very interesting perspective indeed and you're right, back then a lot of people began jumping on the eastern spiritual philosophy bandwagon and I think its cool that someone had enough sense to remind them of how dull their attempts were. Also very short lived mainly because it was all a fad....

  35. m.... ....

Jeff Porcaro was in Steely Dan and before they were Toto, they played a lot of Steely Dan in their high school band, Donald and Walter even got to watch them play as youngins', so it's more of a memorial to Jeff and their beginnings.

  36. r.... w....

Well these guys just MURDERED this tune..fabuloius version

  37. r.... w....

Simon Phillips is SUCH a monster drummer--ambidextrous --killer player!!!!

  38. R.... 0....

This tour was in support of "Through The Looking Glass," an album of cover songs. The video is probably from late 2002 / early 2003. Me thinks they owed their record company something so they did this. Check out their version of "Watching The Detectives." Lukather does a great imitation of Elvis Costello who hated them! So they stuck it right up his ass!! LOL!!

  39. p.... c....

La magnifica quitarra de Steve lukather

  40. r.... ....

Do we know what year this perf?

  41. C.... Z....

Cardinal Rule of Playing Covers # 1 "Thou shall respect the composition !" He butchered the guitar solo. End of.

    C.... Z....

so did Joe Walsh but who gives a fig?

    C.... Z....

Channel Z i mean no he just played a different solo

  42. L.... ....

This is decent, but personally, Steely Dan's version kicks ass.

    L.... ....

@Vic Damico Exactly! Skunk Baxter and Denny Dais took this song to another level. Not only that, Donald Fagen added a certain edge to this catchy jam. Maybe I'm biased because I'm such a fan of the Dan.

    L.... ....

@LadySwag502 Yup !  No one in the world will ever do better than Skunk and Dias here, they set an unsurpassed standard!  :)

    L.... ....

    You know it!

    L.... ....

@LadySoul502 David Paich founder of TOTO helped write it when he was in Steely Dan

    L.... ....

+EJ “SMOKIN'JOE” LaFleur Wrong. Fagen and Becker wrote it in 1971 and didn't record it until '73 on the Cowntdown LP. David Paich was never in the band. Read: " Steely Dan - Reelin in the Years" by Brian Sweet. Full of information about SD and quotes from Becker and Fagen all through the book.

  43. B.... ....

I was a fan of Toto, but this sound awful.

    B.... ....

the vocals are kind of boogie..

    B.... ....

+BigWallyFilms wtf. this is the only good version of this song ;)

    B.... ....

    +BigWallyFilms wtf?

  44. C.... R....

A very good version, but it can't top Steely Dan's live version in Santa Monica 1974 on the "Citizen" album.

  45. Q.... L....

    @Marcus Harrington TOTO!

    Q.... L....

Awesome! ! Gonnt jump in loaf xx

    Q.... L....

    @Marcus Harrington

    Grrrrrr
    ;)

    Q.... L....

    wat a face;)

  46. L.... ....

I had no idea they played this and did such a kick-ass job doing it. And it's right after While my guitar gently weeps, which was also awesome.

  47. J.... M....

YOU'RE NUTS.  THERE IS ONLY ONE BODHISATTVA, AND THAT WAS THE STUDIO VERSION.  NUMB NUTS.  i SUPPOSE YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF AS MUSICIAN.

  48. s.... ....

Definitely one of the better covers out there that still respects the source material.

  49. G.... R....

I wasn't talking writing skills, just playing covers and I still and always will think that Toto did it better, my opinion, tyvm.

  50. o.... ....

It's a good cover. But if Toto was that great they would have written the song, not covered it. A lot of people can play music. Not many can write it well.

  51. G.... R....

Eat your heart out Steely Dan, especially Skunk Baxter, I'm afraid Toto whooped ya' guys. lol

  52. G.... L....

    well, yey!!
