Toots And The Maytals - 54-46 - That's My Number Lyrics
I said yeah (I said yeah), listen what I say (listen what I say)
I said yeah (I said yeah), listen what I say (listen what I say)
I said stick it up mister
Hear what I say sir
And you will get no hurt mister
Do what I say sir
Just what I mean sir
Get your hands in the air, sir
And you will get no hurt no
I said yeah (I said yeah), listen what I say (listen what I say)
I said yeah (I said yeah), listen what I say (listen what I say)
Second thing they say I must join the office
He'd say "what's your number?"
I don't answer
He'd say "what's your number, man?"
He'd say "WHAT'S YOUR NUMBER, NOW?"
He'd say "WHAT'S YOUR NUMBER, NOW?"
I said "54-46, that's my number (woah...) "
"54-46, that's my number (woah...)
One more time!
"54-46, that's my number (woah...)
"54-46, that's my number (woah...)
I said yeah (I said yeah), listen what I say (listen what I say)
I said yeah (I said yeah), listen what I say (listen what I say)
I said yeah (I said yeah), listen what I say (listen what I say)
I said yeah (I said yeah), listen what I say (listen what I say)
Stick it up, mister!
Hear what I say, sir, yeah...
Get your hands in the air, sir!
And you will get no hurt sir
He said "Turn out your left pocket"
"Ah, Give me a clean search sir"
"Take off your shirt sir"
"I ain't got no ratchet now"
"Stick it up mister! (I said yeah), Hear what I say sir! (I said yeah) "
"Get your hands in the air sir! (I said yeah), and you will get no hurt mister! (I said yeah) "
Woah! Yeah! (I said yeah)
Waah! Yeah! (I said yeah)
Stick it up mister now (I said yeah)
Hear what I say sir! (I said yeah)

Could be worse
I did a Toots tribute medley on all percussion instruments. This song kicks it off. Check it out here!

The *original* piece, though the reggae version that everyone know is still a killer.
True reggae...beautiful version 🔝🎶🙌
Vedo Marghera co verdo la finestra!
Love this version
This version is incredible
54 46 Alpha and Omega ?
ska, rocksteady, reggae, trojan reggae and bluebeat.
Frederick "Toots" Hibbert and the Maytals paid the same Ska dues as Bob Marley all the way through the 1960's and virtually transformed Rock Steady into Reggae. This is the original version of the classic harrowing tale of Toots' arrest and imprisonment. If there wasn't enough soul in this one, his sequel "54-46 WAS My Number," took care of that nicely (and spread his popularity outside Jamaica).
I just looked up the lyrics and realized there was another (the original) version. Then I realized he was either talking about prison or something. Wow.
Nicely said, sir.
Aye, riddim possibly the most used ever from ''Train to Skaville'', which ironically isn't ska at all but rocksteady.
One SPG COP HERE.
Tune man. Jamaicans always slaying :)
I think he means the movie called: This Is England, where I think the song are taking a part :-)

Vinyl rules
This is actually the earlier version to be released. This came out as a single in 1968. The version titled "54-46 WAS My Number" came out two years later in 1970 and has different lyrics and a more freewheelingly soulful presentation. Only difference between this and mixes I've heard previously of this recording is the longer fade at the end.
I have this version and the original on two different albums in the box set. I will see if I can get some more info when I get home.
big bad vintage tune...... thanks for sharing
Discographies on Toots are problematic because like many artists of this era with longevity, he rerecorded several of his best tracks. Unlike most of them, sometimes the remakes are remarkably great...in fact there are a couple of them that are so good they compare favorably to the originals. If anyone knows a good source for a solid discography on Toots, please let us know.
Which is that version? I mean does anyone have more information about the release, year etc? please i NEED to find that one. The other version is very well known, but this... just this!!!
