I missed it the first time through, but Bennett changed the lyric in the second verse from the original. The lyric in the second verse is "Out of doorways, black umbrellas came to pursue me", but is changed here to "Out of doorways, dark umbrellas came to pursue me". Tony Bennett has far too much respect for the writer to have done this on purpose. I assume it's an innocent mistake. I noticed he's wearing glasses and reading the lyric sheet on a number of the other duets, but not here. Perhaps he was singing from memory. They appeared together on GMA and he sings the correct lyric.


I sure hope it wasn't done to be politically correct. Gene Lees creates one of the most beautiful lyrics of that era, using the haunting Armando Manzanero melody. Every word a lyricist settles on, serves a purpose and should never be altered, especially an adjective. Are people today so cautious about how they use the word "black"? "Black umbrellas" creates a more focused image and helps establish the anonymity and the monotony of the "faceless people". The word dark doesn't. If it was done on purpose, shame on them for changing the lyric, if it was an innocent mistake, so be it.

I have heard so many versions of this song, in both English and Spanish but my God, this incredible version of the legendary Tony Bennett and the mesmerising Alejandro Sanz cuts deep into my heart. It is so full of emotions that it always brings me tides of tears. My highest esteem to these two impeccable artists!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍

I love this song, quite a few have recorded it now, but this version is a favorite, lyricist Gene Lees and composer Armando Manzanero made this a memorable number, it's just beyond beautiful!
