Tony Bennett - Lost In The Stars Lyrics

Before Lord God made the sea or the land
He held all the stars in the palm of his hand
And they ran through his fingers like grains of sand
And one little star fell alone

Then the Lord God hunted through the wide night air
For the little dark star on the wind down there
And he stated and promised he'd take special care
So it wouldn't get lost no more

Now, a man don't mind if the stars get dim
And the clouds blow over and darken him
So long as the Lord God's watching over them
Keeping track how it all goes on

But I've been walking through the night and the day
Till my eyes get weary and my head turns gray
And sometimes it seems maybe God's gone away
Forgetting his promise and word he'd say

And we're lost out here in the stars
Little stars, big stars, blowing through the night
And we're lost out here in the stars

Tony Bennett Lost In The Stars Comments

A beautiful baritone into the tenor’s range easily as a young man; add the stylization and there’s the two immortals: Bennett and Sinatra.
Even at that Sinatra lost his range years before he retired.

His other version is better than this one I think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcSlOwYIaCQ

Nobody will ever top tonys voice. He is the master.

I listened to other artist perform this but, Tony Bennett's version is undoubtedly the best.

First of all, there is no best unless Sarah Vaughan recorded the song, and as fate would have it, she did. Secondly, Tony recorded this in '56. This was obviously important to him because he addressed it again just two years later. Obviously he thought he could do it better and he did. While his voice was as always, spectacular, the tempo is a bit too fast, the vibrato, controlled as it is, is a bit too much, and the phrasing seems a little tentative. This was a tune for the more seasoned vocalist he quickly became. At the time it was just one of many indications that we had a singer of great significance on the horizon. Too bad we couldn't have bought stock in him back then for when he finally arrived, well, fuhgeddaboudit!

    Thanks for Comments.

This is a perfect song for Bennett and he does it beautifully.  Wish I could find Walter Huston's version of it - on the flip side of a 78 with his immortal September Song - his non-singer's talent is most appropriate for both of songs.
