Tony Bennett - It Had To Be You Lyrics

It seems like dreams like I’ve always had
Could be, should be, makin’ me glad
Why am I blue?
Its up to you to explain
I’m thinking maybe baby I’ll go away
Someday, some way, you’ll come and say,
“Its you that I need”
Maybe you’ll be pleading in vain

It had to be you, it had to be you
I wandered around, and finally found the somebody who
Could make me be blue, could make me be true
And even be glad, just to be sad - thinking of you

Some others I've seen, might never be mean
Might never be cross, or try to be boss
But they wouldn't do
For nobody else, gave me a thrill - with all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you
It had to be you

In 1924 only Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue was more popular than this Jones and Kahn song and both are finally in the public domain as of January, 2020 (although this recording could still be copyright protected). Actually there were many hit songs created in Chicago in 1924 including the first boogie woogie song and the first hit to be promoted by radio, It Ain't Goin' Rain No Mo'. As always, with the greats (Frank, Nat, Patsy , Dean and on) less is more...just a guitar, a piano, and maybe a snare and bass fiddle, we get the essence and the glory of their voice

We suspect this version of the song was arranged by Bennett's then-pianist Ralph Sharon. Interesting to compare it with the later version by Lee Musiker.

We were trying to guess how old Tony was at the time he recorded this? Judging from the picture, and his voice, we'd guess maybe around 40? Interestingly, the song was sung at a much faster tempo early on (was published in 1924.)
