Tommy James - Sweet Cherry Wine Lyrics
C'mon, everyone, we got to get together now
Oh, yeah, love's the only thing that matters anyhow
And the beauty of life
Can only survive
If we love one another
Oh, yeah, yesterday my friends were marching out to war
Oh, yeah, listen, now, we ain't a-marching anymore
No, we ain't gonna fight
Only God has the right
To decide who's to live and die
He gave us sweet cherry wine
So very fine
We'll drink it right down
Pass it all around
Sweet cherry wine
(All day and night)
And everybody's gonna feel so fine
Drinking sweet cherry wine
Yes, they will
Watch the mountain turn to dust and blow away
Oh, Lord, you know there's got to be a better way
And the old masquerade
Is a no soul parade
Marchin' through the ruins of time
To save us, he gave us
Sweet cherry wine
So very fine
We'll drink it right down
Pass it all around
So stimulating, so intoxicating
Sweet cherry wine
Everybody's gonna feel so fine
Drinking sweet cherry wine
Oh, sweet cherry wine
So very fine
We'll drink it right down
Pass it all around
So stimulating, so intoxicating
Sweet cherry wine
C'mon, drink it with your brother
Trust in one another
Yeah, yeah
We need each other
Sweet cherry wine
Drink it right down
Pass it all around
People, don't you know
The cup is running over?
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh
Oh
Come on
Come on
Hey (Sweet)
Ooh

Tommy James Sweet Cherry Wine Comments
and your sister. Don't bogart that wine.
Tommy and the Shondells had plenty of great tunes but I always thought this was their finest record.
Memories of Junior High School, love to go back and stay.
what a crappy bunch of feeble wanabe musicians
It's sad that we still kill each other in war.
I agree, but Man has be killing each other since the beginning of time.
All these dislikes.. I don’t think I’ve ever hated any type of video on YouTube enough to hit the dislike button, but this song is so good. To each their own I guess but I love this song.
Everybody acts like the Beatles was the only great band back then LOL that's not true
This was great song to roller skate to when I was a teen. We never thought about the lyrics it was a smooth rhythm we could move to.. WaHoo!
They're in my HOF
this is music man.
Love, love, love this song!!
The vocals are so well stacked. It’s a marvelous engineering job. I once met Tommy James. What a nice guy he was. A class act. He said in his book that he noticed he was the only one of his childhood friends that could sing in tune. Haha. Boy, could he ...

Trumpet player hitting screech solo at 2:40 ! Unbelieveable. It's probably the late Bud Brisbois but I've never found a source to corroborate it. God bless Tommy and good old Bud the "Rocket man".
RIP Ssgt Johnny Boyd - Vietnam '68 '70. Gone but not forgotten warrior🤺
I was only six but two of my older brothers were pow at the time and I remember It all..The people the music the news reports and the day my brothers fought there way back from hell..My hero's escaped and made It back home.
Everybody's gonna feel so fine, drinking sweet chery wine🖕
The late 1960’s & the 1970’s had lots of great songs, great music & great artists. The 45’s, the LPs, the Top 30 & Top 40 song lists in the record stores. Sweet Cherry wine was during my Freshman years of High school. I went to Oakcrest Regional High School during my Freshman Year of 1968-1969. I lived in Elwood, New Jersey at that time. June 21,1969 I moved to Newark, Delaware & attended Christiana High School, graduated June 12,1972. June 27,1972 I went active duty in the U.S.Navy which took me to Great Lakes for boot camp, then my first ship in Norfolk,VA where I did 2 Med cruises & 2 Carribean cruises aboard the USS Seattle AOE-3, then in 1974 I transferred to my second ship in the Navy in San Diego and did the first of my 3 Westpac cruises. It was on my first Westpac Cruise that I not only met my late wife of 31 years in the Philippines, but it was also the first country outside of the United States & Canada that I got to see.
Being in the military does give you opportunities to see other countries. Myself Aug 1974, I was sent to Okinawa with the United States Marine Corps. I hated it then. We lost 2 Marines during the Evacuation of Saigon, April 1975 and over 20 Marines during the Mayaguez Incident on Koh Tang Island Cambodia May 1975. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant. But 45 yrs later I try to remember the good times.
Transcends time! Summer time in the late 60s! Please take me back❤️

Tommy James for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Come On! Get Serious!
What a soulful voice Tommy has.
I remember going over to my friends house and us neighborhood kids would listen to this album in their basement! Great memories!
Wow, this is really cool, a long version, I'm used to the single 45 rpm version, never heard the extended ending before.
This takes me back to the Good ole Days💙 in the 60's. God I miss those days.....
To know love...is to know God. Tommy knows this so well.
The world could take lessons from this song
What's kind of funny is that the song does not have to do with alcohol though the church tried to have the song band from what I read briefly below. The Jesus Movement reached Tommy James and this song is speaking of the Joy of the Lord LOL.
Only God has the right
If these guys came out in the late 80’s they would be bigger than Bon Jovi. Music wasn’t as hyped and marketed the way it is now
Oh yeah, yesterday my friends were marchin out to war
Oh yeah, listen now we ain't a-marchin any more

Thank you to all our vets !!! Great songn!
I don't care what Tommy James said later. To most of us, Crimson and Clover was about love, Crystal Blue Persuasion was a hippy's musings, and Sweet Cherry Wine was a protest song. Those are my memories of those songs. I feel no need to think of them differently.
ball of fire was next
Outstanding........!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tommy James & The SD...God Bless Our Boys That Were In Country...Love You All And Thank You All..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1969 was an awesome year for awesome music... I was 18 living in Cincinnati... WSAI 1530 was a powerful AM radio station that played all the Hits and more!

3.5/4 tempo?
I sit and put my earphones on 70s music blasting in my ears when i should be cleaning my house and doing laundry. Oh well.

Great music 👍
love hearing this song thanks!!! 1969 what a year .
Dam I almost forgot about this one.
Thank you , with deep gratitude, for all those who have and are serving our country! Each generation in my family has served, down to my grandson, who just returned from Oman and Alaska, as well, before and after Oman. God bless them and their families always! I was an Army wife for six years, 1969-77. I'm so glad and proud to have volunteered and helped care for returning soldiers, at Letterman General Hospital at the Presidio of San Francisco! My heart truly hurt for so many of them! I remember that all, God bless them! ❤️🙏❤️
🥀This is a Powerful song amazing lyrics and music I love this song 🥀🤘
A very underrated song. This was one of my favorites.
This is a beautiful song. It should be a tribute to all the Veterans, serving then & now. What a great Veteran's theme song this would be. What a beautiful song for all those who served to protect our country. I'm very proud of all our Veterans. Treat them with the respect & dignity they so well deserve.
Yes, Exactly Right!!!
Even the rapists and murderers and torturers.
Love it. One of the ''best''.
Isiah "beat swords into plowshares"
Tommy James 45 RPM King. No one else is close!
outsold the beatles 68/69
Amen brother. Killers Row in 1969-Crimson in Clover, Sweet Cherry Wine Crystal Blue Persuasion in just a six month period. His "color r era".
We’d better start listening to these important words...”only God has the right...”
Send me back in time.
Over three years ago I posted on this song. I just came back to listen to this song again.i noticed all the comments to my comment. I wish all of you well. I’m now retired. My bride of over 36 years and I are now able to enjoy the hard work we put in since we were teenagers. Life is good. We own a farm and am diligently trying to feed our brothers and sisters with the blessing that God gives us and the fruits of our labor. Teach your children well and leave a positive impact on the world we share. By the way, my plums are the best and they come from Oklahoma!

Everyone we GOT to GET TOGETHER NOW! Great song and still stands true today. Loved it when it first came out and still love it. It's beautiful and sad at the same time. Bittersweet. 😎✌

@George Ralph 😁✌
This reminds me of the innocent days I'm more Sandlot you know what I mean
Dink know it was anty war song
George and Company: This and that is the Gospel truth! They outsold even the Beatles in 1969 paralleling Herman's Hermits' feat in 1965. This is my favourite from Tommy BTW. I was 16 singing all the hits and drumming too. I was head chorister in an Anglican Cathedral therefore, songs like this and my fave MacCarthur's Park appealed me big time! Yes, I hear the words much like Jesus being referred to as Crimson and Clover + a Crystal Blue Persuasion then in the fall of 69 "Ball Of Fire" up in the sky watching over you and I way up high = beautiful.
It was 50 years ago today 3/23/1969 "Sweet Cherry Wine", was released to the world! It has sold over 2.5 million copies and still going strong! I just received another royalty check from BMI yesterday! I want to Thank You ALL for making this happen!!! All of you that 'liked' SCW Thanks a million and God Bless YOU!!! Always, Richie Grasso
Such a beautiful concept. Too bad people aren't listening. It brings a rush of memories flooding back.
Glad you are getting royalty checks. I just read Tommy's book. All the music you guys made still sounds great. A friend gave me the anthology CD. I've been listening to it and so have my neighbors.
Only God has the right to decide who's to live or die! Amen!
wish you guys can write more of this music today
Sweet YouTube always here ,
When your sad or happy ,
You can count on my friend and yours to be here .
nice song-me like ha ha!
One of the most beautiful songs ever!!!! Wish there was still music like this.
I was 10 when it came out. But it also was a time when the music reflected on the times.war, political. Many radio stations were baned to play this music even Motown. They put it to words in there music.now I don't understand the new and really don't care to.god bless all
Tommy James almost committed suicide the whole neighborhood was losing their sons in Vietnam he really cared about them!!
The Last Supper
I was 8 yrs old when this song came out.
Still love it !
Real music 60's rules
Still beautiful, and we're still marching for something or to somewhere.
Song came out in 1969
Popular band in 1981
THE BESTTTTTTTTT
Awesome lyrics...
I was listening to this when I was 6-7 years old. I was WAY ahead of my time ! Anthology I think was the 8 track I had with old school headphones 🎧 😎😎😎
My favorite TJ song by a mile (with "She" as a close second). Great message for those of us that had dads in Vietnam at the time.. Sweet Cherry Wine -- the blood of Jesus.
Oh yeah yesterday my freinds were marching out to war .Oh yeah listen now we aint marching anymore .no we aint gonna fight Only God has the right to decide whos to live or to die .To save us He gave us His wine of His Love and Spirit so intoxicating 💜💜💜😀Love these guys my nine yr old nephew Loved this song talked me out of only copy 😀💜💜 He was murdered at 30 but He was a child of God so Hes in Heaven this song makes me. Remember how much he loved this n me too .Thank you Tommy James n the Shondels 💜💜
I love this song. I was 13 when I first heard it. Many of my relatives were in Vietnam. War is horrible for all. Many screwed up for life . my Daddy was WWII Vet. I love our military but pray for peace.
Curious, the the lyrics are as fresh as they were in 1969. We humans still can't get it right after all of this time.
Back when songs made you think. Back then, music was art and it counted. Not it's nonsense. If you don't know what I am talking about, then go back and listen to the words of this song.
I love this music takes the blues away
We used Lavoris in our Bongs
This song brings back some great memories. People got along so much better...What the hell happen?
Only God has the right unless they enter our Country illegally. Then. GUESS WHAT? SQUISH SQUASH
Which illegal border crosser has the U.S. executed?
My grandmother loves this song
I believe that this song was written by richie grosso from south philly. Anyway its a great song
