Many old hymn tunes are best suited to be sung at dance speed, not dirge speed. We have been expecting Jesus for a long time, but it feels even longer when sung like this. Please - just because it's an old tune, it doesn't have to be sung slowly!

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (December 15, Advent 3), we sang this as our Opening Hymn. Ditto for me as I filled in at a local Lutheran Church. It is #254 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. However, it is to the tune, JEFFERSON, from W. Walker, Southern Harmony, 1835.

I came for to enjoy the music--and it is good music, not the specious theology.  This is not the place to controvert Christian theology., but to celebrate the messge of Christ.

Here's some atheistic nonsense: Once upon a time there was nothing and nothing happened to nothing and then nothing magically exploded for no reason creating everything and then a bunch of everything magically rearranged itself for no reason what so ever into self-replicating bits which then turned into dinosaurs. And they all lived happily ever after. The End.

Here’s some christian nonsense. According to biblical mythology, God is Jesus's father and Mary his mother, implying that God impregnated Mary to make Jesus. Jesus is also supposed to be the same thing as God so Jesus impregnated his own mother with himself (that's why I like to call him Jesus Motherfucking Christ, along with the fact that I am a Samuel L. Jackson fan). This is an absurd story. Why impregnate your own mother to make yourself? Jesus was just a human with a few good ideas.
