Tom Waits - Downtown Lyrics
red pants and the sugarman in, the temple street gloom, drinkin' chivas
regal in a four dollar room, just another dead soldier in a powder blue night,
sugarman says baby everything's alright, goin' downtown down downtown.
montclaire de havelin doin' the st. vitus dance, lookin' for someone to chop
mink, all the traffic in the street but it's so hard to think, goin' downtown
down downtown.
frankie's wearin' lipstick pierre cardin, i swear to god i seen him holdin'
hands with jimmy bond, sally's high on crank and hungry for some sweets, she's
fem in the sheets but she's butch in the streets, goin' downtown down
downtown.
it's the cool of the evening the sun's goin' down, i want to hold you in my
arms i want to push you around, i want to break your bottle and spill out all
down downtown.
red pants and the sugarman in the temple, drinkin' chivas regal in a four
dollar room, just another dead soldier in a powder blue night, red pants turns
to sugarman and says everything's alright, goin' downtown down downtown.

Where the hell is one of the best songs on the album... In Shades? C'mon. If you ain't got it, don't post it. Nice thought, but the full album includes In Shades in the #2 spot.

"Drinking Chivas Regal in a four dollar", great lyrics.
Very cool stuff. Our group's lead singer is largely influenced by this stuff. Check it out if you get a chance. Cheers!

Synesthesia, anyone? ;P
rocknroll poet you got everything right, what an artist i am totally amazed and religously grateful for tom waites take on life.he's the Da vinci of my generation. the one comment about this song being a "redundant narcotic beat". dude take your classless ass uptown. you couldn't even play in the same room with these muscians much less match wits with the poet of endless time. snobs , hate em.
I think "redudant narcotic beat" is a compliment! The song certainly is narcotic, it makes you drunk...
You know when a mind relies on a soulless ear or a soul withouth fellings, they make comments sounding like farths
I'm a fan of originality and Tom Waits is in a class all by himself ! I still want to know "What's he doing in there ?" I mean Genius! Come on Step right up, lets have a Jockey full of bourbon and go Downtown ! Tom Waits made it in the R&R hall of fame w/out even trying.

I enter a bar and I'll smell is deodorant and cheap perfume, bought because of some pretentious advertisment...I want to enter a bar and smell cigarettes,REAL cocktails and long drinks and I wanna hear the stories of the people on the bar while TOM WAITS is blasting out of a real jukebox...

"Heartattack And Vine" (1980)
From which album is it?
@renoraider2 Ikinshpelwurserifatzwatcherdiggin?
ozzyhendrix...St.vidas dance is uncontrolable jerking of the body from nerve impulses. Could be sombody jonesin' for some kind of fix, cause they're coming down off something powerfull. To me, the name, it gives the impression of a washed up tranny movie star. This album seems to be about all types of "after closing time" freaks that occupy the streets & alleys of the city.
Sounds like a good traffic generater
This "Downtown" beats the one on Rain Dogs by a country mile, but the Rain Dogs number was all that ever came up in my YouTube searches...'til now. My greasy, nicotine-stained trilby's off to you, EverlastJazz.
God he was hot.
STILL IS!
my favorite tom song ever, seriously appreciate the upload my friend.
Only the greatest poet of the rock n' roll era.
"Montclaire de Havelin doin' the St.Vitus dance", there's something I don't get.
Underrated Waits song, my favorite of his downtown songs. Makes living in the city seem wicked in a way that no one can resist.
