Tom T. Hall - Ravishing Ruby Lyrics
Ravishing ruby, she'd been around for awhile
Ravishing ruby, she was a truckstop child
Born in the back of a rig somewhere near L.A.
Ravishing ruby, you poured a lot of hot coffee in your day
Just like her daddy said, said he'd be back someday
She was just fourteen, she grew up wild and free
And all the time she'd be waitin' on him, she'd been waiting on you and me
Ravishing ruby, she sleeps in a bunk out back
Her days and nights are filled with dreams of a man named smilin' Jack
That was her daddy's name and that's all she ever knew
Ravishing ruby ain't got time for guys like me and you
Ravishing ruby, a beautiful young girl now
Waitin' on smilin' Jack, he'll come rollin' by
And she wants to see him, she wants to touch him either way, dead or alive
Ravishing ruby, she sleeps in a bunk out back
Her days and nights are filled with dreams of a man named smilin' Jack
That was her daddy's name and that's all she ever knew
Ravishing ruby ain't got time for guys like me and you

Tom T. Hall Ravishing Ruby Comments
God I miss my Grandpa....
I only have one burning question what kind of a****** would dislike this music? Man your ears must be up your ass!
Wow Redding California and Tom T Hall what a mix what a way to write a song out on the road sipping on a cup of coffee thinking about things he comes up with this what a great song thank you Tom T for all the music throughout the years your songs are great
There was a guy named Jack Truesdale lived in the old neighborhood the song reminds me of Jack is a CB handle was smiling Jack
This song takes me back to a less frightening world.
Love this song
Aw Hell, that is just the bomb. Holy Hell. Perfect.
"T" nailed it with Ravishing Ruby (also The Year That Clayton Delany Died)
A great record that hit #1 on both the U.S. and Canadian country singles charts in 1973:
U.S.A.
#1 Record World
#3 Billboard
#3 Cash Box
Canada
#1 RPM Country Tracks
Tom T. was a regular on Dean Martin's Country Music program that aired on NBC in 1973. During one rehearsal Tom was singing Ravishing Ruby (apparently with some extra gusto) when Dean hollered at him, "Take it easy kid, you got the job!" As it turned out Ravishing Ruby became a favorite of Dean's. Later on he joined Loretta Lynn & Tom T. for some singing on the program:

Tom told this story on a Ralph Emery radio show that aired in January 1974.
I loved listening to Tom t hall when I was a Stockman. Wesley champion.
still awesome
Well never been to redding but I was hauling horses and stopped for fuel and food at a truck stop in Albuquerque and heard it for the first time. Good song, shame that can't sing or write music like this today.
A great song by a great singer.
We just bought a BEAUTIFUL CHROME..&RED...Silver Eagle RV..
Named her RAVISHING RUBY.😊
LOVE TOM T HALL!!.
brings back memories of a run down bar I used to stop in after work for a few,in Peoria Il..rough crowd..but like the insurance ad I've seen a lot so I know a lot
One of the greatest singers of the time.
I love this song and I have now registered my Malinois bitch with the name Ravishing Ruby
She had it rough but made the most of it. Thanks for posting.
GOD BLESS Tom T. Hall !!! Would love to see him again !!!
If I had to give Mr Hall a dollar bill for every time I have played Ravishing Ruby, I would be broke. It is one of my favorites by him. My daddy introduced me to Tom ‘s music back many years ago and said I would like him because he told stores in his songs, some sad, some funny, but all forever enjoyable.Thank you dad for the guidance, and you, Tom, for the writing and singing them.
You have come a long way from Olive Hill!
A great songwriter singer and a great American
Gives real credibility to his coin name of the storyteller. Love this song.
being a truck driver for 15 years; I can relate!
When I was kid i thought it was "Radish and Ruby" and I never understood what a radish had to do with the song.
Wel , i love that tune so much...
Great Great !
Is Tom still with us?
A lot of hot c___ in your day!!
Love this awesome song!!!!
Tom T hall is awesome!!
Smilin' jack was unequalled!!!!!!
Tom T. Hall... one of the very BEST country music storytellers!
THE storyteller as a matter of fact
💖my Tom T....
any time I want to enjoy the old stuff I break out my big old round hole flat top and play them myself..I quit the music business when country went "middle of the road" and then to country rock..now it's nothing but shit..you can't even dance a decent two step to the crap they play today
Not true no more. There's been a real revival with even a nice handful of contemporary artists doing fine by us all. Daryl Singletary, Mo Pitney, Amber Digby, Rhonda Vincent, Red Jenkins..There's a few good ones for you to start diggin' around. Oh, and don't forget Merle's kids Ben Haggard and Noel Haggard or Willie's kids. Whisperin' Bill Anderson and some others have really put in some effort that has been payin' off in new found interest in good old traditional country music. Cheers. Here's a great channel..

Love the song, and Tom T, A real story teller!!!!!!!!!
Great song......the country artists of today should listen to him and take a few lessons on what country should sound like....not the shit they put out nowadays.....
Completely agree with you
LOL. I absolutely agree. Tom T Hall is my my favorite songwriter of all-time and a pretty good singer... and today's music is shit.
Absolutely today's artists sound like they learned to sing by taking a correspondence course .
@Lemmy Cash Most of them lack emotion and feeling in their voices, due to the use of autotune.
Another big one for Tom T. Hall. And a great one. Keep singing country man. We just can't get enough of your songs and you singing them......
KEVIN SCOTT
brings back fond memories of my older brother that has past on. Our grandfather used to play this song to my brother when we were very young. It was his favourite and every time i hear this song i cant help forgetting the love i have for my brother.
The song is pure redneck poetry. God Bless your brother, friend.
I would be interested in hearing what it is about this song that 6 people gave a thumbs down to. Is it just to good a song? Has to be it right? I was like 11 or 12 when this came out & I took an instant like to it. Still one one my faves by him!
Understand if it isn't JUNGLE CRAP...the young punks don't like it!.
Haters be hating
recsec, Don't concern yourself. The down votes have always seemed to be souls that wandered by and did not understand a thing. Probably high or drunk or both. Honestly, this is not important at all. They most likely do not even remember the dislike.
She made a solemn vow.
still sayin "what'll be?"
This is a true account of a waitress at a truck stop in Redding, California where Tom T. Hall had stopped for some coffee and a bite to eat while on tour back in the early '70"s.
Life is madder than anything you can make up.
Are all Toms songs from reality?
Farley Hill - As Jennifer Sun stated in an earlier reply, many of his songs are of true accounts or based upon true accounts. The following songs that were written by Tom T. Hall are some that I know of that were real experiences in addition to "Ravishing Ruby": "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine", "Who's Gonna Feed Them Hogs", "The Little Lady Preacher", "Harper Valley PTA", "Salute To a Switchblade", "Ramona's Revenge", "The Three Sofa Story", "It Sure Can Get Cold In Demoines" and "The Year Clayton Delaney Died" to name a few. There are more. Search for Tom T. Hall on Google, as there are a lot articles out there on Tom T. Hall. He is a very interesting and humble individual, as was his late wife Dixie Hall who passed away two years ago at the age of 80.
I live in Redding Ca. crazy
I have been an admirer of Tom T. since I was a youngster. I even had a good friend that named his baby boy Clayton Delaney. Serious business.
This man wrote my story over and over and over again. There is just none better.
Finally found this song and the rest of Toms songs what a great writer of music its from the heart, love it and still sounds great today.
like to dance with someone....
Enjoy yourself .....
you are so funny..... makes me always smiling.. good night from here my dear friend.... big smile and warm hug
This song brings me back to Sierra Vista, AZ and playing it on the jukebox at several thirst parlors.
Jeeze..Musta been two streets back then..Fry Blvd and Wilcox..I live in Bisbee, showed up the first time about '79 and SV was a tiny town then. Sure ain't no more.
This is really one of my favorite songs of all time. I've been singing it for years and just had to hear the original again today!
One of his best songs ever!!
Summer of 1973. Tearing up the radio.
BTW, anybody else think Tom T. and Buck Showalter resemble one another?
Horsehide ĺ
Tom T Hall is the master.
Waiting on Smilin' Jack, he'll come rollin' by. So funny and so sad.
not that you should give a damn, but i think tom t is perhaps the best country singer, he surely is the best composer. i just think this is his very best song. listen to the words, listen to the country music, listen to the tex-mex music, pure skill.
Tom T. Hall was never a great singer, but he is my favorite songwriter of all time. Your voice doesn't have to be great when your songs are this good.
Classic
Tom T Hall is a supreme story song writer..
Perfecamente, and that is why they call Tom the Storyteller
Wasn't THIS was what REAL country music was all about?
My all time two favorite male country singers are Tom T Hall, and Bobby Bare. To me, they both embody everything country music should be about.
this man is so good
I remember all his songs. Those were the days of creative writers and singers.
50s 60s & 70s
Thank you for the post.
I grew up with him and his songs.... brings back a lot of memories <3
can't relate to anybody who don't like country music. this is AMERICANA at it's best
Loved this and still do, brings back great memories of the 70's .
I've always loved this song.
