Tom T. Hall - A Bar With No Beer Lyrics

The beachcomber works by the ocean all day
He gets what the tourists and the sea throw away
He's hot and he's thristy and the words hurt his ears
When they tell him he stopped in a bar with no beer

It's lonesome away from your kinfolks at home
By the campfires at night where the buffalo roam
But there's nothin' so lonesome, so morbid or drear
Then to sit on a stool in a bar with no beer

There's a dog on the sidewalk for his master he waits
But his boss is inside drinkin' wine with his mates
He hurries for cover and cringes in fear
Ain't no place for a dog 'round a bar with no beer

Now Billy the barfly, first time in his life
He went home cold sober to his lovin' wife
He walks in the kitchen, she says, you're early, my dear
He breaks down and tells her, the bar's got no beer

The owner is anxious for the beer man to come
There's a far away look on the face of the bum
The waitress is cranky, she says, it's lonely in here
What a terrible place is a bar with no beer

Well, I've had me some trouble, I've had me some pain
Been locked up in the cold and left out in the rain
I fought with the law but there's one thing I fear
To get stuck in a town in a bar with no beer

I'm Australian, and I know EXACTLY where Tom T. got this.  This is based on Slim Dusty's song "A Pub With No Beer".  Some of the verses are almost exactly the same.  They were great mates and Tom wrote songs for Slim on a few occasions.

    r.... ....

Slim Dusty recorded this back in the 1950's ... I don't know where you get 1970 from!!

    r.... ....

I know thatSlim recorded it in the50s ,I said I recorded it in 1970.

Slim Dusty is one of my favorites , when He died in 2003 Australia lost the best ,and yes he recorded Pub with no beer 1957 , I recorded Bar with no beer ( comedy version) 1970. Sorry JW for getting off the subject matter , TomT is also a favorite of mine

I meant some of Tom T.'s verses are nearly exactly the same as Pub With No Beer.

    r.... ....

Actually it was Dan Shean who wrote the original poem.

Hmmmm....I think a bar probably wouldn't stay in business for very long if it didn't have any beer...at least not in my neck of the woods it wouldn't!...hehehe!.. Anyways, this was Tom's so-called "swan song" on the Top 40 charts, as it was his final chart entry on the Top 40, making it barely to #40 for 1 week back on June 29, 1985...still a great song for Mr. Hall, who racked up an impressive 41 Top 40 singles between 1967-1985...thanks a bunch for posting and sharing this with all the nice people J.W....and please have a beautiful holiday season filled with happiness, joy, and much, much love! Take Care! Ms. Elizabeth :)
