Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Feel A Whole Lot Better Comments
I'm from San Francisco! I wish 9 and 1966! Petty get a better job! I think Petty really worship this song! Through his voice! Haight-Ashbury!!!!!!!!!!!
That's awesome
Nothing sounds like a 12 string Rickenbacker! Such a great sound!
This version and Charly Garcia’s version are awesome
Great cover! Still can't believe he's gone!. RIP, brother.
Even though I heard the Byrds hits live in ‘65 on the radio—
I didn’t hear this tune until the 90s, and it blew me away.
Great cover of a great Byrds' song. Nice one Tom! "We LUVV Ric 12 string!"
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love this song and Tom Petty, but this is about as close to the original as possible. That being said, it's a tremendous version.
A superb version of one of the very best of songs, the Byrds had this as a great hit and this is a wonderful tribute to them. Possibly could not be bettered! Well done guys and RIP Tom.
Miss this Man. R.I.P. Tom. Love All your Music.
Great cover by a GREAT, Himself,.......Great sounds of the 'RIC'
This take is GREAT, totally nails the song, but I'm surprised no one's noticed that Petty is playing, and always did play, a 6-string Riki. Roger McGinnis played a 12-string on the original recording and that guitar was his trademark but Petty still gets that chimey sound because he's playing through a Vox AC-30. Both guitars are awesome - especially in combination with that amp.
The local store here just started carryin Vox. Even cheap gtrs with the worst pups sound pretty good thru the 30.LOL. Wonder if He or Mike used the Byrds jangle box on this and Free Fallin?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oInx4_FkGE in spanish.. mucho mejor :)
Fantastic version by Petty & HBs..….Byrds & Petty......….both classic & timeless.
Always thought he sounded like a cross between McGuinn and Dylan
Thank you Tom for all all your great music. PC the Boy Cat.
J’ai 2 amours, Rory G. And TP
Suena tan parecido a la original! Pero esta vez lo siento, me quedo con los Byrds
Took my son and friends to see Tom and the Heartbreakers. Unforgettable experience that Tom bridged the generation between my son and his friends. Blessings Tom.
Now heaven sounds even better. And earth too
More, please ...
The reason why oh, I can't say I have to let you go, baby and right away
After what you did I can't stay now
And I'll probably feel a whole lot better when you're gone
Baby for a long time (baby for a long time) you had me believe (you had me believe)
That your love was all mine (that your love was all mine) and that's the way it would be
But I didn't know (but I didn't know) that you were putting me on
And I'll probably feel a whole lot better when you're gone, when you're gone
Now I gotta say (I gotta say) that it's not like before (that it's not like before)
And I'm not gonna play your games any more (and I'm not gonna play)
After what you did (after what you did)I can't stay on
And I'll probably feel a whole lot better when you're gone
Oh, when you're gone, oh when you gone, oh when you gone
Tom Petty nailed it
Awesome cover
Great Version! Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers & those Rickenbacker 12 string jangling guitars!!
The Byrds and Gene Clark nailed it...My favorite rock&roll song of all time. Tom gave it a good shot though.
a size for Petty's performance
Love this version!
The powerful drum sound locked on to a punchier bass guitar is the big difference from the 60s Byrds version.
Goodbye to a real outlaw artist...you will be missed...
A good cover, but can't touch the original. Too flat....
His specialty... dressing up and singing other people's songs.
Btw, his vocals are awesome too 👍
GREAT JOB!!! I loved this song (still do) ever since I first heard it back in 1966 as a 12 year old. The guitar solo by Tom Petty sounds almost identical to the original one on the Byrds track. My hat's off to Tom Petty.
If you really dig the Byrds' recording(like I do), man, you've got to love Petty's cover totally - & I do !!
My favorite Petty tune
I remember the day I discovered this and my brother-in-law’s collection.
I didn’t realize the Byrds had done it. It made my respect level go up immensely for everybody involved.
powergirl901 Right, it was on the Byrds’ first album “Mr. Tambourine Man”. IFAWLB is one of my faves!
Felt like one of my best friends died when Tom left.
Tom nailed it
took the words out of mouth....
A great cover of The Byrds 1965 classic from Pettys 1989 solo album Full Moon Fever done with a lotta love and care.
Love this
Gene and Tom 2 greats.😑
I love this song no matter who sings
It.
Mr. Petty had a love for the Byrds Music that really showed in this version. We miss you Tom....
And The Beatles.
And 29 people are what? Awful human beings?
idiots they are....
Maybe just deaf AND Blind
Feel a whole lot better was fresh in mid 60s when the Byrds sang it for the first time , it sounded fresh in 90s in TP's first solo album and it will sound equally good when a highly talented 10s band( say War on Drugs) plays it but one condition- The Rickenbacker must be used by a good Chuck Berry school guitarist
Not as good as Gene Clark and the Byrds original; but not bad, even without the hook.
Two of the most noticeable sounds on this planet. The 12 string 'ric' and the 'tele.' Sweet
Great Tune!
I know I'll come off as preachy, but: if you're a smoker, stop. It's what killed Tom early, as well as George Harrison and many others. It's a stupid addiction, but it can be defeated. I haven't smoked since the day after George died. Don't miss it, and would probably be dead if I hadn't quit. Peace.
A great cover of the Byrds classic.
Nice cover of the Byrd's classic!
Supplies of our feature length documentary 'The Byrd Who Flew Alone' about Gene Clark (the writer of this song) are getting low. If you'd like to order one, better do it soon. @t
Rest In Peace. Tom Earl Petty. ✝️
Great cover ! R.I.P.
Full Moon Fever...just so enriching
The birds, Tom Petty, & George Harrison, inspired me to play the 12 string guitar even though I am a bass player at heart.
Tom Petty at one of his best performances. RIP !
Gene would have liked this version, neat tidy and fairly stripped back with the guitars, nice harmonies too.....
johnnybsteelriff , I think Gene Clark was Very happy that his song was recorded by Tom Petty and was a “ hit “ track on TP’s album. It never really got the higher profile it deserved when recorded by The Byrds but was always a popular song played live.
Very nice music! Thank you!
Covering a song from the Byrds is a gutsy move but tom petty nailed it.
It was probably a tribute to them. His music from 89 on had a bit of a Byrds feel to it. I think he collaborated with their music producer on ''Learning to fly'' etc...(Id have to google it to be sure)
@Gerry Dooley the byrds influenced him clearly. I never thought of that before reading your response. Thanks.
In his last public appearance apart from the 40th anniversary tour, receiving an award from Musicares he commented that the people whom he revered came into his life, in his words, showed up, and the 1st one through the door was Roger McGuinn of the Byrds. I remember McGwinn interviewed in the Peter Bogdanovich bio Runnnin Down a Dream given a copy of early Heartbreakers and saying, when did I write this? Answer; you didn't write this. … I know but when did I write this? Later on there is priceless footage of Tom having a truth attack confronting 2 'suits' who were trying to fit Roger Mcguinn into some weirdly inappropriate box and Tom going ballistic .. leading to the collaboration between the two men, King of the Hill that was their reaction to the story of John Philips of the Mamas and Papas.
My heart breaks when I think of how many people miss Tom. In my opinion an excellent cover can go one of two ways; either you put the 1st version aside, put your heart and soul into your own version and leave it behind or 2. you manage to absolutely capture the spirit of version one and of course here Tom does both. Most comments about his music are moving personal testaments or great observations; only one (pretty good for the internet) thoroughly annoyed me when someone or other wrote that Tom was a miniature Dylan. What rock was the writer living under??? Never mind. Also loved cover for John Sebastian's Oh, The Stories we could Tell, Hank Williams' The Lost Highway, where he deliberately did adopt the same sound and van Morrison's Your Mystic Eyes which I saw live and he OWNED that song it still gives me shivers.
@Gerry Dooley Respectfully I must disagree. Another person called him a miniature Bob Dylan (ouch) which … shows the writer wasn't fully acquainted with his music. If you look at the range of styles and subjects throughout his career with the Heartbreakers … Compare and contrast Wildflowers with Southern Accents with Mojo with Hypnotic Eye, just pulling things out of the air. Think about it. Tom Petty needs no-one to support his reputation, he was and will always remain a free standing structure. His curatorship in his role as The Last DJ on Sirius XM Buried Treasure bears witness to how intently he listened to, and was a fan of, many other musicians and the breadth of his musical interests and knowledge is mind blowing.
@Lats Niebling He was excellent at tributes and always acknowledged his influences, unlike his older daughter Adria who, when he was still alive, stole the choreography from a Czech modern dance troupe while producing Beyoncé, and was called out by Rolling Stone Magazine, clearly a serious violation of Tom's ethics. Learning to Fly however was produced by Jeff Lynne and caused some trouble among other band members because they'd been used to a longer more proactive roll in previous albums.
I saw a cartoon in a newspaper showing Tom walking up to the pearlie gates and he sees George Harrison & Roy Orbison standing there to greet him, & he says I can't believe I beat Dylan here!
I can see Tom saying that,, he was very COOL & his music will live on!
Felt like I lost a member of the family ,or and old buddy.
also great historian 4 the early days of rock& roll..✌
Good bye, Tom. You were one of the good ones from that period in time when Rock n Roll was freakin great.
Wonderful cover!!! And I usually am disappointed by covers....Miss you Mr. Petty......you will find your blessings....
in the next life......
In the 1980s I saw him in concert ! he was great ! what a bad loss for the music lnd .
Me siento mucho mejor!
😉and great bass
Seen him on my 40th Birthday at Coral Sky Amphetheater in 2005, also the last time I was carded to drink. Great night, great memory. RIP Tom ; (
Petty is faithful to the original. His voice even recalls Gene Clark's.
@Ricky Twelvestring one of the music mag's back in the day, when it first came out, methinks...
Tom Petty did this serious justice
Jonathan Vernot just what I was thinking.
To me, Petty always sounded like a mix of Dylan and McGuinn.
One of the great aspects of TPs songwriting was space. Here, he gives an extra measure at the end each verse.
byrds,byrds,byrds
Tom left us way too soon.. RIP Brother!!
Damn it . Tom bless you.
No I don't feel better since you are gone. We miss you Tom
New Traveling Wilburys lineup:
Dylan
Roger McGuinn [replacing Tom]
Jeff Lynne
Julian Lennon [replacing George Harrison]
Chris Isaak [replacing Roy Orbison]
Chris Isaak would be perfect
Wouldn't Dhani Harrison be a better fit for replacing George?
An excellent version of the song with much reference to the Byrds' single. On top of everything else, the man had good taste.
Why do we always have to lose the great ones.
A coverdose!!!!!!!
I love Petty and the Byrds, but this sounds like Tom Petty recorded at a karaoke bar. It's an almost note for note cover, same arrangement. What a shame.
Hannah Miyamoto , yes VERY close to the original recording by The Byrds, but in that way a nice tribute to them and especially to Gene Clark . It brought that song into the awareness of a generation of listeners 20 plus years younger and “ proved “ its “ classic appeal”....... a timeless , straight forward, uncomplicated rock ‘n roll song. ❤️
This Dude still gives good vibrations to my soul!!!! See ya on the other side!!
Oh man Tom, I'd feel a whole lot better if you weren't gone.
God bless
Not many artists can do justice to such a classic tune like T.P. did here.
I miss you Tom
Heartbreaker❤❤❤🇺🇸
Great sounds quality
A great homage to the great Bryds!!!
Levante la mano el que llego acá por Charly Garcia... SI, YO!
yo!!! :D
Y yo también, una genialidad
Faithful cover of a great tune by a great band... love it!
Great song! Thanks for posting this!
Tom Petty lived such a wonderful life. Too bad it wasn't longer. RIP great musician.
Love this! Never fails to remind me of "That Thing You Do" movie with Tom Hanks and his look alike younger mini-me LOL This song should have been in the movie! Tom Petty & his band really fooled me I thought it was the 60's again. The youthful exuberance and mop top excitement of Beatlemania or something like it, masking the darkness and animosity of the "good riddance ...hopefully soon" lyrics. Wow.
Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne wrote and co-produced the title song. So many people took cues from the Canyon artists, especially Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan's own son Jakob with The Wallflowers (Bringing Down The Horse is still one of my all time top 10 records...no bad tracks on that entire album. Best record Tom Petty never cut IMNSHO)
ITS A GREAT COVER OF A COVER. SONG NEEDLES N PINS. SAME ROOT CHORD OF A WITH VERY CLOSE VIRIANTS OF A CHORD. SAME TEMPO.
I guess it's true that you don't appreciate someone until they're gone. When I was in high school Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were on MTV with "Don't come around here no more" every hour. I came to hate that song and had a dislike for the band. As I got older I heard more of their "albums" and found I liked a lot of what they did. I ever regret never seeing them live all the times they came to the Cleveland area. Learn from my mistakes people; Go to the concerts you want to even by yourself if needed. We are only here for a short time and you only get one chance at this. He was so humble, and so good. What a talent, what a loss. If you get a chance, check out the Foo Fighters tribute to Tom in Cincinnati. Gets me every time.
I still have an unused ticket for the at Cynthia Woods here in the Houston/Woodlands. I am sick that I didn't go. There was another concert Saturday night and didn't want to do two in a row. Stupid stupid.
8 people will feel a whole lot better if they just stick their heads farther up their butts.
RIP, Tom Petty . A Rocker's Rocker ! --------------------WolfSky9, 71 y/o
Luv u wherever u are Tom,
singing for God and all the angels in heaven or hell!!!!
Joao Ahrens -has to be heaven, too good of a person
Bless your heart, Tom
Gone but never forgotten Tom. Your music will live on forever. RIP Bud.
The immortal D chord riff, practically invented for the Rickenbacker 12 string. Petty was bequeathed the thread of Dylan's music from the Byrds....who lives today to carry it on? RIP Gene Clark, Tom Petty.
It's in A
yeah you tell em roger.....just figured this one out for our local open mic jam nite at players pizza penn valley calif....there's also a great tutorial on you tube....and yes it's in a.....bless you for all you have done for music over the years...@Roger Mcguinn
Rattlesnake Hearts Franz! 🐍🖤✨
Thank you Tom
La mejor versión que jamás se ha hecho de este temazo de los Byrds. Te echaremos de menos, Tom; ya nunca podremos verte en España.
The very best cover of this fantastic song of The Byrds. We'll miss you, Tom; we will never see you in Spain.
Oshtia tio no me lo creo chaval
So sad that he has gone. Thanks for being one of the coolest pop stars, Tom.
Petty pays tribute to his heroes-great version! Gene Clark would be proud...thanks for the memories Tom.
Gino and Tom is playing this song together now, with some help from George
As I understand it, at the time of Tom Petty's release of this song, Gene had been sober for a time. However, the influx of the royalties, from Petty's version, put cash in Gene's pockets. Leading to renewed alcohol and drug use. Just so sad, Gene was/is my favorite. Well along with Marvin Gaye, who was another sad story. But back to Gene, miss his music, thank god for Youtube.
I have been listening to Genes music for 6 months solid now and it just keeps getting better
