Tom Paxton - Wasn't That A Party? Lyrics

Could-a been the whisky, might-a been the gin
Could-a been the three or four six packs, I don't know
But won't you look at the mess I'm in
A head like a football, I think I'm going to die
But tell me, a-me oh, me oh my
Wasn't that a party

Someone had a grapefruit, wore it like a hat
I saw someone under my kitchen table, talking to an old tomcat
He were talking about football
The cat was talking back
Along about then everything went black
Wasn't that a party

I’m sure it's just my memory
Playing tricks on me
But I believe I saw my buddy
Sittin' up in my neighbour’s tree

He was singin' a folk song
Sounded pretty good
Woulda sounded better if his wife hadn't made such a racket
Choppin' up my neighbour's wood
I think it was his wood pile
It could’ve been his door
I know she musta got three or four
But wasn't that a party

Bill, and Joe and Tommy
Went a little far
They were sitting in the front yard
Blowing on the siren
Of somebody's police car

And so you see, Your Honour
It was all in fun
That little bitty track meet down on main street
Was just to see if the cops could run
They run us in to see you
In an alcoholic haze
And I sure can use those thirty days
But wasn't that a party

They run us in to see you
In an alcoholic haze
And I sure can use those thirty days
But wasn't that a party

Recorded in London I think. Circa 1972. Great song. Witty jangly with Ralph McTell on the gee-tar!

This song popped into my head today and I had to come listen to it. Just goes to show us that we may not remember what we had for lunch yesterday, but the songs remain.

Nice to see Tom singing the song. Thanks for writing it Tom old friend!

Have always loved Tom and his songs. It wasn't till about 20 years ago that a dear friend of mine from CA confided to me that, not only did she know him, but also that "Wasn't that a Party" arose from an actual party at her house. My friend's creds are beyond reproach. Just sayin' - just adding to the mix.

    Cute Song

  8. t.... ....

i prefer the rovers version; it was a lot more lively and rocked.

    t.... ....

Hes pleading to a judge, dont think he ment for the song to be upbeat like their, version is

A good song, and a good performance from its original songwriter-- but I much prefer the Irish Rovers' cover version!

  10. S.... R....

Best version on YouTube. The Irish Rovers pushed the tempo a little too hard. I vaguely recall a version with a final verse that ended "... and throw another party!"

  11. S.... T....

We learned this song from my wife, who had performed it in a duo 25 years ago. I've never listened to the original until today!. Love the skiffle feel to the track. I guess we took a slightly different tack with our version.

  12. 1.... ....

Irish rovers version is more rockin

  13. 1.... ....

not quite the song I remember

  14. M.... ....

how come, they don´t throw such parties any more?

  15. S.... B....

This is the right version - i've missed it for 37 years. Only remembered the line: "Could have been the whiskey, might have been the gin ..."
