Tom Paxton - Packwood Lyrics

When I asked Senator Packwood
How he planned to cast his vote
He grabbed me by the neck
And stuck his tongue down my throat
It’s just his sensitive way
Of saying, “Do it my way”
Time to find another job
Bye, bye, Bob
He went to New York City
Had a lot of success
Saw the Statue of Liberty
Stuck his hand up her dress
It’s just his sensitive way
Of saying, “Have a nice day”
Time to find another job
Bye, bye Bob

This song has been a staple of my repertoire for perhaps 50 years.
It's a lovely song, sung gently and unrushed.

This guy had to be the most versatile songwriter that I know of, he wrote beautiful ballads like this one, protest songs, kid's songs and even comedy songs (such as bottle of wine) - amazing diversity. A truly under-appreciated talent.

It's a lesson too late for the learning
Made of sand, made of sand
In the wink of an eye my soul is turnin'
In your hand, in your hand

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
Well, I could've loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind

You've got reason a plenty for goin'
This I know, this I know
For the weeds have been steadily growin'
Please don't go, please don't go

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
Well, I could've loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind

As I lie in my bed in the mornin'
    Without you, without you.
Every song in my breast lies a bornin'
    Without you, without you.

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
Well, I could've loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind
That was the last thing on my mind.

This track appeared on Many Elektra Records Albums, e.g., Folksong '65 (later reissued in 1990 I think). It is a wonderful song as done by Tom Paxton.
