Tom Paxton - Mr. Blue Lyrics

Good morning, Mister Blue
We've got our eyes on you
The evidence is clear, that you've been scheming
You like to steal away
And while away the day
You’d like to spend an hour dreaming
What will it take, to whip you into line
A broken heart
A broken head
It can be arranged
It can be arranged
Step softly, Mister Blue
We know what's best for you
We know where your precious dreams will take you
You've got a slot to fill
And fill that slot you will
You'll learn to love it, or we'll break you
What will it take, to whip you into line
A broken heart
A broken head
It can be arranged
It can be arranged
Be careful, Mister Blue
This phase you're going through
Can lead you nowhere else but to disaster
Excuse us while we grin
You've worn our patience thin
It's time to show you who's your master
Don't worry, Mister Blue
We'll take good care of you
Just think of it as sense and not surrender
But never think again
That you can think again
Or you'll get something you'll remember
What will it take, to whip you into line
A broken heart
A broken head
It can be arranged
It can be arranged

Tom Paxton Mr. Blue Comments
  1. f.... ....

Was in search of a song with these lyrics that I recorded a bit of many decades ago, probably was the Clear Light version, but this was a nice surprise to see that Tom Paxton apparently got there first.

Thank You so much for the reference. I've been looking on and off for the other version since hearing it over 45 years ago.

I heard this by Clear Light, right after it came out. I like theirs and Tom Paxton's versions.

    A.... R....

Paxton wrote song...Clear Lights kicks ass.

Clear Light's version nails the truth of the song. Tom's version is so "light weight" that the message can easily be missed.....makes you wonder why Tom didn't put a point on his laser-like insight, but instead went for a "who gives a shit" treatment. Disappointing.

    P.... ....

Clear Light's version is a young man's version, heavy handed. Although I prefer Paxton's version of only his voice and his acoustic guitar, it's more subtle and so underlines the banality of evil. The lightweight treatment juxtapose the sombre lyrics. It mirrors how the permanent gov't/shadow gov't actually works.

I think Paxton tells the story just as well.

Just finished listening to Clear Light's version of this song. Let's just say that their arrangement is very adventurous!!
