Tom Paxton - Leaving London Lyrics
With a dark and rolling sea
Between my love and me
I keep walking thru this cold hard town
While I wait for better days
I could use a place to stay
If I could beg, steal, or borrow
A ticket on some boat or plane
I'd be leaving London tomorrow
To fly to my young love again
Up at dawn to change my shirt
And to wash away the dirt
Then it's over to American Express
Not one letter did I find
No, she didn't send one line
Though I know she had my forwarding address
Was so full they barred the door
And I sang a song she knows quite well
But it wouldn't take too long
To make up another song
For a lonesome and a last farewell

Heavenly voice. One of my favorite musicians
Beautiful Song l Love. Tom💗💓💞🌹💃💃💃💃💃💖💗💓❤️❤️❤️🥤🍷🍷
I used to go to see him every year at thr Free Trade Hall in Manchester back in the 70s.GREAT DAYS
Paxton has such a wide range of songs... Bottle of Wine is great but this song brings back memories. Years ago my friend and I played in a band that covered Scottish/Irish/Canadian folk tunes as well as many of Tom's songs and Leaving London was always my favorite. I'd like to share my take on this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu1KowaP3JE
All his love songs are about his late wife, Annie.
Jeffery Matuszak For his (late) wife, yes, but her name was Midge. You may be recalling John Denver’s first wife, Annie.
So beautifully sad.
In the late 60s and early 70s a friend (Keith Aitken) and I were lucky enough to work with Pan Am. Whenever we could we would go to Tom's concerts, no matter in the world they happened to be. When in London we also used to visit the Troubadour. Did a couple of numbers there on open mike nights. Great memories of my youth. Do the young to-day have such great memories?
+thedaddybear uk Not at all. I'm 21 years old and sadly most people my age are unaware of the beauty that exists in music like this. Their fond memories involve alcohol, amphetamines and dance music. I don't have anything against drugs or alcohol, but today's youth lacks soul.
+Fred J Sad but true. I think the problem to-day is that there is just too much on offer. When I was 21 mobile telephones didn't exist. No home computers and internet. Not many answerfones around either. If you wanted to talk with friends, you had to meet face to face. Different world.
The Troubadour (mentioned at 2m07s) has been forced to close because neighbours were complaining about the noise... a bit like moving in next door to an airport, then complaining...

That's excellent news! One day I'll go look!
I have this on a old double album of Tom's, great to hear it on You Tube, Thanks for posting it.
So beautiful
a good voice!
Yes, the Troubadour, was a great, great folk club in London, in Earl's Court on Old Brompton Road, about a 5 minute walk from the Underground Station. I used to hang out there years ago, when I visited London.
The main room when you walked in was where they sold all kinds of coffee's. I always ordered their great cappachino. The music rooom was downstairs & I once read my poetry there on stage on poetry night. Music was great, so many folk singers played there! I used to hang out there a lot.
:* about to blaze up this amazing
I really love Tom's music, such clarity of voice,
Brilliant. I haven't heard this for years. Thanks.
I read in a jacket liner once that he wrote this for his wife...I'm not sure, but I think they've been married a long time.
@rodneydeb1 The Troubadour still exists in Earls Court .. still good live music downstairs, tho' a bit 'trendy' and pricier up in the coffee/bistro area these days.
Don't know about the girl, but I presume it is the "Troubadour" in Earls Court, which was a bit of an artists and musicians hangout in the 1950s and 1960s, he is referring to
Good to see the original thanks for posting. Anyone know the background to this? Was there a pub in London called The troubador? Does the woman exist ?
