Tom Paxton - Bottle Of Wine Lyrics

Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine
When you gonna let me get sober?
Let me alone, let me go home
Let me go back to start over

Ramblin' around this dirty old town
Singin' for nickels and dimes
Times getting tough, I ain't got enough
To buy a little bottle of wine

Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine
When you gonna let me get sober?
Let me alone, let me go home
Let me go back to start over

Little hotel, older than Hell
Dark as a coal in a mine
Blanket too thin, I lay there and grin
'Cause I got a little bottle of wine

Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine
When you gonna let me get sober?
Let me alone, let me go home
Let me go back to start over

Pain in my head and bugs in my bed
Pants are so old that they shine
Out on the street tell the people I meet
"Won'tcha buy me a bottle of wine?"

Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine
When you gonna let me get sober?
Let me alone, let me go home
Let me go back to start over

Well, a preacher would preach, teacher would teach
A miner would dig in a mine
I ride the rods trustin' in God
A-huggin' my bottle of wine

Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine
When you gonna let me get sober?
Let me alone, let me go home
Let me go back to start over

I went to the zoo for an hour or two
And the weather was pleasant and fine
While wanderin' by a gorilla said hi
Did you have a little bottle of wine

Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine
When you gonna let me get sober?
Let me alone, let me go home
Let me go back to start over

While strugglin' through to meet the latest guru
I was the two-hundredth person in line
I turned to a friend and saw the same in the end
Why don't we get a little bottle of wine

Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine
When you gonna let me get sober?
Let me alone, let me go home
Let me go back to start over

Jolie bouteille, sacrée bouteille
Veux-tu me laisser tranquille?
Je veux te quitter, je veux m'en aller
Je veux recommencer ma vie

Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine
When you gonna let me get sober?
Let me alone, let me go home
Let me go back to start over
Je veux recommencer ma vie

I saw the words "bottle of wine, fruit of the vine" in a book I am reading, knew it was from a song but couldn't think of which song. Of course I found this on line. I really like Tom Paxton but haven't listened for a while.

I hope he was joking when he said that the French pretend that that song is French because that song is sung in French by Graeme Allwright who sings Leonard Cohen's songs, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Tom Paxton and a bunch of other guys he translates their songs in French, sing also some in English  and had success in France doing it since the early 60's, and every Graeme Alwright fan knows that these songs are not French songs.

  23. j.... ....

Hehehe... Actually I only knew Graeme Allwright’s French version so far; it’s great to hear the original. I don’t think people who discover the original French version of “My Way” are so happy (search for “Claude François, Comme d’habitude”).

    j.... ....

You will have to know French very well to appreciate Claude Francois song Come d' habitude to appreciate it. Claude Francois was honored and very happy that his songs was sang in English by Frank Sinatra.

@ThePartienmer I always assumed the French lyrics could not be as smug and smarmy as Paul Anka's English lyrics - please tell me I'm right ... !

"Graeme Allwright (born November 7, 1926) is a singer-songwriter. Born in Wellington, New Zealand, he moved to France in 1948. He began to perform and write folk songs a few years later and was eventually signed by Sonogram.
*****In the 1960s, he translated into French a number of songs written by Leonard Cohen, Tom Paxton and Pete Seeger. He remained active through the 1970s.******"
