Tom Jones - Polk Salad Annie Lyrics

Some of you all never been down South too much...
I'm gonna tell you a little story, so you'll understand where I'm talking about
Down there we have a plant that grows out in the woods and the fields,
and it looks something like a turnip green.
Everybody calls it Polk salad. Now that's Polk salad.
Used to know a girl that lived down there and
she'd go out in the evenings to pick a mess of it...
Carry it home and cook it for supper, 'cause that's about all they had to eat,
But they did all right.

Down in Louisiana
Where the alligators grow so mean
Lived a girl that I swear to the world
Made the alligators look tame

Polk salad Annie
'Gators got your granny
Everybody said it was a shame
For the mama was working on the chain-gang
What a mean, vicious woman

Everyday before suppertime
She'd go down by the truck patch
And pick her a mess of Polk salad
And carry it home in a tote sack

Polk salad Annie
'Gators got you granny
Everybody said it was a shame
'Cause the mama was working on the chain-gang
Whoo, how wretched, dispiteful, straight-razor totin' woman,
Lord have mercy.

Sock a little Polk salad to me
Yeah, you know what, yeah, yeah

Her daddy was a lazy and a no-count
Claimed he had a bad back
All her brothers were fit for
Was stealing watermelons out of my truck patch

For once Polk salad Annie
'Gators got your granny
Everybody said it was a shame
For the mama was working on the chain-gang

Sock a little Polk salad to me
You know I need a meal miss
You sock a little
Hey, hey, hey, yeah, yeah
(Chic a bon, chic a bon, chic a bon bon bon bon
Chic a bon, chic a bon, chic a bon bon bon bon)
Sock a little Polk salad to me
You know I need a meal miss
Sock a little Polk salad to him
You know I need a meal
Chinc, chinc, chinc, chin, ling, ling ling

  4. F.... F....

I dont know why tom felt that he had to sing every song that elvis sang? This version sucks. Elvis is so much better. I like tim but he should have had more signature songs and a better bunch of songvwriters.

  5. J.... J....

This version just plain out rocks the others. Forgive me ELVIS...

  6. D.... D....

Elvis owned this song. I like Tom's version and Tony's, but Elvis just couldn't be topped when he was on.

Not a "patch" on the original! Bring on Tony Joe White!

  19. o.... w....

Not even near the original! Bring on Tony Joe White.

  20. W.... t....

Tom Jones legendary singing fits a lot of songs, but this is way too intrusive! Nothing beats TJW´s version.

  21. C.... M....

Elvis #.1.with Polk Salad ..not even close

  22. M.... C....

not being funny but he knows fookall about it? ....Elvis Rules! x

  23. A.... S....

only tony joe can do this song

  24. A.... S....

    Tony Joe White best.

  25. j.... m....

Hard to believe Tom is English.

  26. P.... P....

    Tom WOW Jones!!!

  27. A.... B....

There’s poke salad and gators in southern Wales?

  28. g.... ....

actually the best version I ever heard was by a small band in Port Huron Michigan back in the late 70's, Harold Casey and the Telstars, Harold's brother Billy sang the song and believe it or not none of the big names could ever match Billy's version.

  29. J.... a....

Elvis------1000% even Tonyjoe didnt do it as good as Elvis--

  30. A.... J....

best bit is the intro.. then Tom spoils it...
Tony Joe White.. he lived this song before he wrote it.. Even Elvis couldn't reach Tony Joe's emotion.. Tom is just totally over doing it.. but that's not unusual.. for him..

  31. S.... P....

Sorry Tommy can not do it like Tony Joe

  32. t.... i....

This sucks compared to the original.....

  33. F.... F....

Every song elvis sang so did fucking tom

  34. I.... P....

Yep big Tom does a credible version but Tony Joe White's original version is off the scale

  35. B.... R....

I like Tom Jones, buuuuuuuut Elvis version the best.

  36. D.... S....

OMG! Southern soul Tom Jones style, wowza never heard him sing like that before!

  37. C.... O....

I've listened to The original version as well as this and Elvis version. The honest truth is Elvis version is the weakest of the three. You can make an argument for the original version and Tom Jones version being the best. Tom's version is done at a different tempo from the original. However his voice takes this song to new heights that the original doesn't. Either way the original and Tom's version are both pretty good. Elvis sounds a bit for lack of a better word flat and uninspired. For the record I like BOTH Jones and Presley.

  38. p.... ....

Elvis' version with the introduction of the big band trumpets really brought this song to a new level!

  39. J.... C....

    Thanks Reid Mansell
    Grat song, great upload!

  40. J.... C....

    One one my fav song...

  41. J.... C....

Best version Elvis "On Stage" álbum...
Second best version Elvis "MSG" álbum... Ghanging the rythdmn and adding de bass solo along with tutt's perfect work...
Tony Joe White is of course the original and is very very good but Elvis put more energy in the song... Pure Elvis stile... Territori... And the king'voice... Is far better...
Tom Jones as usual is great and strong but in the art of to sing is not only a cuestion of hit high notes...
There is much more than this...
Sorry friends... Is only my opinion...

    J.... C....

I 'm a great fan of the three artits...

  42. s.... b....

tony joe white did it best but tom jones is fun!

  43. l.... d....

elvis on MSG simply the best

  44. C.... R....

Way better than the weak Presley versions, but not a spot on Tony Joe's original version.

  45. A.... ....

Sounds like an episode of Hong Kong Phooey for chrissake. Tony Joe White - no argument is easily the best.

  46. K.... N....

not bad but Tony Joe White does it better

  47. S.... K....

Cut it up Tom Jones....Cut It Up!!

  48. A.... G....

Elvis' version on the Madison Square Garden album is the best!

    A.... G....

'Prince From Another Planet' or 'As Recorded at Madison Square Garden'?

  49. S.... T....

    POKE salad

  50. A.... R....

tom done a great version his way ..he seems to be injoying him self..and why not..Elvis done a blinding version..but u can't be the original.. hats off to all three...

    This one ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vkYVWA6yzY

  53. E.... N....

3 yrs later & I'm still getting comments to my 1st post. of which I still Know to be correct! TJW is unarguably a fantastic song writer, but like with most songwriters/singers, he cant sing a lick. Nor did he have the Best musicians in the world backing him. Leave the singing to 'singers'. Whether its EP's live, or rehearsal versions, or TJ's live or studio versions, they All smoke any TJW version away. TJW version sounds like a 'demo' for EP & TJ, both of whom perfected it in 2 totally different renditions. So to y'all who say TJ copied EP, or vice-versa, Bullshit! Your dead wrong! Right from the opening licks(Jerry Scheffs throbbing bass vs Big Jim Sullivans chicken-pickin' lead), they sound like 2 different songs. Additionally, when 'rockers' say The King didn't 'rock' in the 70's, all us 50 mil King fans point to Polk Salad, among many, many others.(Burnin Love, Suspicious Minds, Patch It Up, Promised Land, T-R-O-U-B-L-E, Way Down, Raised On Rock, Steamroller, Whole Lotta Shakin, Muddy Waters, For The Heart, I Got A Feekin In My Body, Rubberneckin, etc, etc etc.) 1st & foremost is POLK SALAD! ThankYa, ThankYaVeryMuch!!

  54. S.... M....

yeah Elvis was better then Tom. but Tom had his own style. so did Elvis. they both liked a really admired each other a was friends. Elvis loved toms Welsh style a Tom loved Elvis southern style a Elvis loved Tom version of green green grass of home. he loved that song so much he had to record it a when Elvis did it he nailed it. Tom version was good to both are great singers but I happen to love Elvis more. he's my fav singer.

  55. J.... G....

I love Tom Jones and this is a cool version. I think I still love the original by Tony Joe White best.

    J.... G....

Yup. I like it done in both versions. Elvis did it quite well too. Found a few just now in my Likes 👍

  56. s.... ....

  61. H.... K....

No one can hold a candle to Elvis. Sorry Tom

  62. a.... ....

    BEST VERSION !!!

  63. M.... ....

Tom is Great, But Elvis was the KING, thats why Tom copied every song that Elvis made a hit first...

    M.... ....

Elvis also sang some songs that Tom put out first. I think it's safe to say that both men covered some of each other's songs and songs that other people put out first, like this one, Polk Salad Annie. It was Tony Joe White's hit first. Some people prefer Elvis, some Tom, some like both. They are both great entertainers....

    M.... ....

Ever read the Albert Goldman book 'Elvis'? Goldman claimed the opposite: Elvis saw Tom in concert and copied just about every move Jones did, except the tight pants. Elvis said it wasn't right to flash your pecker in tight trousers like Tom Jones did. Jones' moves were natural, Elvis was cleverer and adopted Jones' act in many ways about 1969-70.

    M.... ....

Goldman hated Elvis and never met him. He waited for a celeb to die before writing a negative book about them. He did the same about John Lennon and Lenny Bruce. He also wrote an unflattering article about Bruce Lee. Goldman was writing a book about Jim Morrison at the time of his death. He never met or knew any of his subjects his books were about. A vile disgusting man.

    M.... ....

@Sean Ryan He carked it on an airplane I believe. However, a lot of the stuff Goldman said of Elvis was not untrue. In 1987 in LIFE magazine, Goldman's cover article claimed Elvis probably killed himself. Albert G said that he was fooled by all the stuff about Ginger and the big engagement ring and wedding plans. Elvis wanted out. The publication of Elvis: what happened in JUne 1977, would have stood as a helluva good catalyst to check out.

  64. M.... K....

Why isn't today's music hot and good like this...?

  65. M.... M....

    Best version hands down!!

    M.... M....

    At least someone agrees!

  66. .... ....

  67. M.... M....

Tom covered EVERYTHING better than EVERYBODY.

    +frank ruano Elvis...Overrated. Elvis sucks.

    f.... r....

+violentjett being operated is different than saying he sucks, someone who inspired greats like the Beatles are impossible at "sucking" lmao I myself don't think Elvis is THE KING of anyone's the king it's gonna be little Richard, ,chuck berry etc , but Elvis hardly was bad enough to suck

    f.... r....

+Jack Hamilton I agree....being operated sucks. lol. dumbass.

    f.... r....

+violentjett ye such a dumbass for making a predictive text mistake you Cretin 😂, the fact you replied with no relevant points just highlights your failure hence you having to resort to the most petty and common of topics to dwell on ......nice try dumb dumb 😉

    D.... S....

Darlene Simkins I prefer Elvis 👈🌟💞

  71. D.... B....

    Super Tom ❤️️❤️️❤️️

  72. j.... ....

TOMB USUALLY HAD SOMETHING ELSE STUCK IN HIS MOUTH.

  73. s.... ....

Tony Joe White's version will always be the best, but Tom can most definitely sing his ass off!

  74. P.... ....

This is alright, white soul, but the original version is so dark and deep and I like it like that.

  75. T.... ....

Yeah, nice but it's not Elvis. Sorry Tom

  76. P.... ....

Nothing compares to the original Tony Joe White version.  Nothing!

    P.... ....

Not even the King, I teh you wut

  77. n.... m....

    Rock on Tom!!!

  78. J.... ....

I never really liked and/or appreciated this song until I heard this version.  Funny, Tom Jones rocks "Are you gonna go my way" in a way that i can feel more than the Lenny Kravitz version too.  God Bless you Mr. Jones !

    J.... ....

Just checked out Are You Gonna Go My Way...so killer!!!! Thanks for the heads up.

    J.... ....

    @Reid Mansell You're welcome !

  79. M.... ....

In my opinion Elvis' version is easily the best.

    M.... ....

Marakesh7 tom jones coppied evrrything elvis did

    M.... ....

Frank Furfaro they were friends, son. By the way: Toms version doesnt sound like Elvi's version did. No Copy-Cat!

    M.... ....

Read your history, son...Elvis used to drive him and Priscilla 400 miles from home to Vegas just to catch a young Tom Jones do his thing and a retired Elvis was heavily inspired to make a comeback as a direct result of watching his new friend, Jones...in Tom's version here, he hits notes that Elvis and just about every other singer back then could only dream about and with the lung bursting power to match..

    M.... ....

Actually, the original artist is pretty badass.... Tony Joe White.

    M.... ....

    Elvis' version is electrifying....

  80. T.... F....

Just saying. As a male. I can totally understand why the ladies love Tom. That fucking vocal makes love to my earpussy.

  81. E.... N....

Mr. Mansell, apparently you haven't heard, what the song writer, Tony Joe White, as well as 50M ELVIS fans believe to be the definitive 70's Prime King Live Classic! Don't like it 'live', then try "That's The Way It Is" studio version with Only 4-peice rhythm section &/or dress rehearsal versions! On a scale of 1-10, Any of these, as well as TJ's, are all "11's"!! Rrrrrrock don't get any betta than Da King & Da Voice... The Hillbilly Kat & The Tiger doin' POLK SALAD!!

    E.... N....

    Grande amigo de Elvis
