Todd Snider - America's Favorite Pastime Lyrics
Dock Ellis didn't think he was pitching that day
Back in 1970
When he and his wife took a trip to the ballpark
A little bit differently
So by the time that he hit the bullpen
That's about the time coach Murtaugh came and said
Doc, you're pitching today
Taking the mound, the ground turned into
The icing on a birthday cake
The lead off man came up and turned into
A dancing rattlesnake
The crowd tracked back and forth
In waves of color underneath the sun
That ball turned into a silver bullet
I took a look all around the world one time
I finally discovered
You can't judge a book
Three up, three down for three straight innings
In a zero-zero tie
As all those batters names come ringing
From a voice out of the sky
Hallucinating Halloween scenes
Each new swing of the bat
His sinker looked like it was falling off a table
But nobody was hallucinating that
I took a look all around the world one time
I finally discovered
You can't judge a book
By the top of the seventh, he was up one-to-nothing
And giving them Padres fits
By the bottom of the eighth, he was up two-to-nothing
And they still hadn't got any hits
With one out left to go in the game
The batter looked like a baby child
That birthday cake was shaking
Them waves of color was going wild
By the time that he mowed the last man down
He was high as he had ever been
Laughing to the sounds of the world going around
Completely unaware of the win
And while the papers would say he was scattered that day
He was pretty as a pitcher could be
The day Dock Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates
Threw a no hitter on LSD
I took a look all around the world one time
I finally discovered
You can't judge a book

Todd Snider America's Favorite Pastime Comments
What year is this?
Was looking for a "different" rock song about baseball... Nothing wrong with Centerfield and Glory Days (barely mentions baseball anyway), but I like to look for the forgotten or obscure songs, 'cause they're so much more fun! Then I was reminded of this one... Hell yeah!
Check out Dan Bern - Golden Voice of Vin Scully and Warren Zevons - Bill Lee (if you haven't already)
Yep , true story !
one time I driving and tripping I thought I was doing 110 and I was just doing 10 it took along time that day to make a beer run lol
I did one of those on the NYS Thruway around the Fonda exit. I was the passenger. I asked the driver if he wanted me to drive. You should have seen his face. He tried to rip the steering wheel off and hand it to me.
Todd Snider RULES
cut your ducking fingernails damnit
Not Steve Mann but pretty damn close!
Kinky : I find Snider a better singer, & a more musical player...appropriate notes...less show - off harsh / loud notes. - Different tastes.
I wonder who wrote their songs first Todd or Chuck Brodsky http://youtu.be/wg9DXRP4Ywo
+Michael Scourby I dunno but I thank you for the link! I
Never heard of Chuck before, didn't enjoy his voice, but his song and storytelling were fantastic... made this baseball fan smile. :]
Chuck's music has made the Baseball Hall of Fame ... a helluva storyteller.

great great talent, hell I'm a Republican and love him........imagine what the rest of America would think if this guy ever got any love
Frame 313 I'm not sure what I am but I voted Republican this past year and I relate a lot. to you and this fella with the gitter.
Wait until you listen to Kool Keith.
Abso-fuckin'-lutely true.
of course an argument could be made for Townes Van Zant and Guy Clark as well
Great lyrics ... "Nobody was hallucinatin' that ..."
In the same league with Paul Simon, Lyle Lovett ...
Some drugs use people, some people use drugs... Doc USED that drug. ;)
fucking brilliant !,i hate him.
@1ahole72 i agree.....i love how he tells the story and.. then sings the song.....as good as it gets to me
@1ahole72 Well just goes to prove no matter what you say, theres always someone who wants to start a fight on the internet. Goodbye troll, I have discussed to much with someone on the Youtube comment board more than I should have. Hopefully you'll learn not to take things so personally.
@1ahole72 Well your name really does show who you are. I guess it's easy for people to be elitist on the internet. Just tossing around names even though I didn't say anything negative to begin with.
@1ahole72 I'm sorry did I hurt your feelings? I said hes alright, sorry if I don't praise the gorund he walks on like you do. And what does this have to do with intelligence, your just being an ass.
@1ahole72 I know a couple of other good musicians, hes alright.
The amazing thing about this song is it's based of a true story
THANK YOU JESSIE...For bringing these wonderful artists, singers and songwriters ( who don't want to sign ) into my livingroom. Keep Em Comimg.
