"this couch.." was so tight but pleasant living sounded super generic to me, this however seems to be a little better. not nearly as good as their older stuff though.

Pleasant Living was similar enough to This Couch. This Couch was pretty mathy and the poppier stuff was coming out but the production was great. Moving to Antarctica was real mathy and the production quality was improving. Waves Rise was super mathy and the production wasn't great compared to their major labels stuff. They recorded Waves in one of my good friends garages. I'm not sure if you're familiar with their D-Cups material, but they were covering emo-pop bands back then.

If the "pop" stuff bothers you, I can assure you it was always there. We played shows together in high school and Dylan would cover the "Snickers" theme song from commercials via 2006 or 2007. Have your own opinion, but think about how their lives have changed since they made the music that most resonates with you. There's probably a reason why their sound has transitioned. And it's not selling out to the masses. The still drink Hamms and eat terrible fast food. And they're still bad at throwing Joe Namaths.
