Thrice In Exile Comments
So I'm not the only one who is confused by where the downbeat is in the verse, right? When it first starts, listening to the main riff and the vocals, it feels like the snare is on the offbeat, but then when the chorus comes in, snare is clearly the downbeat-- yet the timing of the drum pattern never really changes in the transition between the two. On the other hand, if I try to hear the snare as the downbeat in the verse, it doesn't feel right at all. Was this intentional?
This is my favorite song of all time. Feels like I could have written this.I'm sure I'm not the only one.

This song hit me hard and and at the core during the homeless times in my life. Thank you Thrice!
I’ve loved this song for 10 years. Now I’m a Christian and I love it even more! Can’t wait to go home
Happy birthday Beggars
This is one of my favorite songs by Thrice! I can relate to it and love it so much after all those listens. Never goes old.
This Album was in my regular music rotation about 5 years ago when my Mom passed away. The day she died, as I drove away from Hospice, this song came on. I felt something release in my heart and I was flooded with hope. I felt my faith increase. I must have listened to this song 100 times that day. So, Dustin Kensrue, if you ever happen to read this comment someday, I just want to say thanks. Your thoughtful poetry comforted me on one of the most difficult days of my life and continues to bring me comfort every time I listen to it. God Bless.
some reason the vocalist reminds me of kurt cobain.
I LOVE this. Sounds like if Depeche Mode went in this direction.
For so long the song Creep by Radiohead has haunted me. Every time I heard it, I would feel like I'm not where I'm supposed to be in my life. This year I finally started listening to Thrice again and I found that I missed out on 5 albums. Now that I'm all caught up, this song has replaced Creep and I finally feel I'm where I'm supposed to be.
Crazy how music can effect people
Essa letra, mermão....essa letra..!!!! ♡
Can't get enough of this song ❤
Thank you guys for making music for people like us...'not all who wander are lost' - Tolkien. See you at the end, at the Gates.
Just a great band! Guys you're doing amazingCongrats from Argentina
echt hammer die band...gefällt mir gut...
These guys rocked for years. You all young fucks are just seeing them. Check their old shit out. I wasn't to popular for liking them 10 years ago now their the shit. Funny world we live in
So underrated
Kcryptonite
I believe this song. Is about Cain. After Cain killed Abel he was cursed to be a Wanderer. Cain even tried to become a city planner to settle down, but God gave him the heart of a Nomad and even kept him safe from harm.
Norma jeans a Christian band too actually
I am an exile - a sojourner; A citizen of some other place.
All I’ve seen is just a glimmer in a shadowy mirror,
But I know one day I’ll see face to face.
I am a nomad - a wanderer; I have nowhere to lay my head down.
There’s no point in putting roots too deep when I’m moving on.
I’m not settling for this unsettling town.
My heart is filled with songs of forever -
Of a city that endures, where all is made new.
I know I don’t belong here; I’ll never
Call this place my home, I’m just passing through.
I am a pilgrim - a voyager; I won’t rest until my lips touch the shore -
Of the land that I’ve been longing for as long as I’ve lived,
Where there’ll be no pain or tears anymore.
My heart is filled with songs of forever -
Of a city that endures, where all is made new.
I know I don’t belong here; I’ll never
Call this place my home, I’m just passing through.
one of my favorite guitar tones. ever.
Does anyone else think this song reminds them of pearl jam? in a good way. I hear so many similarities and this is one of my favorite thrice songs.
Reminds me of Vitalogy.
I could see that but their new stuff reminds me of kings of leon
Berri Txarrak brought me here.
The song that introduced me to Thrice
This song is definitely one of Thrice's best in my opinion. I love how the hope of Dustin's lyrics is so accessible. While Dustin definitely comes across as someone who is firm in what he believes in as far as his faith, he writes in such a way that anybody can relate. I think we can all relate to feeling like we are longing for more in this life. It's just so beautiful that he references a city that endures. Never ending. All is made new. Everyday.
This song is a prime example of the beauty of this band. I have memories from when I was in high school listening to this song and it always brings me back. Thank you Thrice for being so damn awesome.
^You hear them. You hear this song. And you know: This is in every way not meaningless.
2:00 Am. I am doing my Thesis to become a teacher. Just two days left to finish it and show it to my tutor. Will I finish it?
I just wanted to write something. Nice band, I remember a lot of good moments listening to them.
Hope someday see them live. And I also hope get my degree.
Thrice is probably going to WOLOLO me into being a christian one day. I love these guys.
I just realized what this song is about after all of these years.
nonono wololo
its been 2 years since you posted that. what are you waiting for?
On a serious note, it doesn't work that way. Getting saved is easy--they may soften your heart, but salvation is based off, to use a legal term, "a good-faith-belief." That is a belief you come to by evidence, but also you must "yield fruits meet for repentance," which is a scary terminology that has been abused. Repent means to "go from one belief/mindset to the next." What is required of Christians is to stop trusting in themselves to be "good enough to go to Heaven." So, to "yield fruit meet for repentance," in context of the New Testament, is synonymous with, completely dropping any attempts to save yourself. In other words, a saved person will not say and should not even worry about saying, "Just in case, I shall ask for forgiveness before I die."
No, salvation is not based on any works. You get it without works--you don't even need to pray. And once you get it, you can't lose it. Now, that being said, spiritual witness does also count. A biblical faith is not: "my family is Christian and it makes no sense for there to be no creator." It is best summed up as: a personal relationship with the most High. But, that being said, even this saying is misleading.
Proof of Gods existence is all around us , from the conformity in nature , to complexity of the human eye and entire human body , also God himself has revealed him self to us through the Holy Scriptures , his law is written on our hearts.
Like Paul says in Romans we all know God is real , but we suppress the truth
Like trying to hold a beach ball under water , it always pops up
If you slow down and look around you can see His finger prints everywhere ! Good luck to you in your journey through life ! I pray you find the path to Jesus !!
God bless you !!!! Have a great day !
“All these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it. They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth. Obviously people who say such things are looking forward to a country they can call their own. If they had longed for the country they came from, they could have gone back. But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.”
Hebrews 11:13-16 NLT
JD7708 amen
I don't need gods place, I need my own, gods done nothing for me, why should I bend a knee, the only time i'll do it is when someone is down, and i'll try to pick them up, along with myself.
11kirky the problem with your thinking is that you view God as a genie that gives you whatever you want, and because he’s not that, you think you don’t need him. Well heads up, He’s gonna show you how much you need Him.
And that's why Trump is our president. 2020🤘😎👍
@Happy Happy Nightmares Trump and his fervent supporters haven't shown or spoken of much love or respect for the exiles, the sojourners. Caging the children of the downtrodden, those who seek refuge and safe passage away turmoil and violence, isn't exactly in line with this song - nor is demonizing all peoples of color from less fortunate places outside of the US. You know.. those "shithole" countries.
This song really has a deathcab for cutie vibe to it.
It really pains me that I won't see you guys in Santa Anna in October because I'm not in the country...
Please keep the this kind of songs running...
My song when people give me a stare.
Fuck this era of Thrice
+camnok haha
and fuck you too
Haha creative
Steve, on a scale of 1 to 10, how mad are you?
I'm just passing through
I remember my cousin telling me to listen to this. When I did listen to this song, I immediately started to like this.
Such a great band!! So versatile, and meaningful!! Still amazes me that they don't have like 10 million views!!
new album 2016!!!!
listening to this in a dark room
De lo mejor¡¡¡ THRICE Saludos by Ecuador :D
I've been looking everywhere for a copy of the In Exile promo single CD, does anyone reading through these comments happen to own it or know where I can find it? Awesome song.
I remember the first time I heard this song. I was so far away from home and scared. This helped me through some of the darkest times. Sometimes I play this and it is the only way I can look back on that period of my life and smile.
Bought the beggars album for my girlfriend for xmas :) What a masterpiece!
Haha "for your girlfriend" sly move ;)
@Brady Dryer Yeah, he obviously wanted some ass ;)
An orgasm to my ears!! Love this song!!
I fucking love Thrice. Dustin Kensrue, you sexy talented motherfucker.. I can not wait for new Thrice.. 2015 is gonna be a great year!!!
Is there new music coming from Thrice next year?! I hadn't heard anything!
They released a teaser pic for 2015 plus Dustin had mentioned in a interview that they would be doing some work. :)
Not only will they be touring with their old stuff, rumour has it, they will be working on new music!
@flightlessbird33 yea......lol that's what I stated in the original comment :) about new stuff anyhow
Very enjoyable, a musical masterpiece.
Dustin's voice stays young and smooth ever since the start of Thrice
@Kaleb Cooper I wouldn't say that. It's gotten more and more husky over time and his timbre is lower now, which I like to be honest.
It could be from smoking. I'm pretty sure he smokes. Maybe that and just age.
Because he's blessed bro
I am an atheist and I don't get the Christian vibe from these guys(I do know that they are). I do however feel a since of hope from these guys. When I think about it on the simplest of terms I suppose that hope is at the core of all religions.
Indeed sir. Rock on.
@Billy Keith Dustin writes really brilliant lyrics that everyone can enjoy, even if they're influenced by his faith and the bible.
He's also really down to Earth and open minded. He's the type of Christian any Atheist could be friends with, and in the end, isn't that what we all should do? Look past those differences and connect through other means?
I agree man. I find that the net/social media is better when used for positive communication. Thanks for being cool.
I started listening you Thrice long before I accepted Christ, their music did give me hope and I now have a greater appreciation for Dustin's lyrics.
For here we do not have an enduring city(earth), but we are looking for the city(heaven) that is to come.
Hebrews 13:14
You're correct about that. Where do you put your Hope in is one the most important existential questions of existence. You can put hope in man, in yourself, that you can win the approval of others or be succeeful if you play the game of life just right.... but I feel it would be a far cry from what God created you for.
You're very introspective, and good ok you for noticing this about the band
Beneath daily habit and routine is the utter foreignness of the world in which many find themselves estranged.
Incredible song. One of the best I've ever heard.
490.000 views? This song should have millions.
used to play this song on taptap...great song!
Wow one of the best songs ever made and only has this many likes. Shame.
yes i know the song is biblical but, i feel this way in the physical ow God is preparing me for mission work such that america doesnt feel like home atm i'm ready to move
this wont go loud enough on my headphones. pretty disappointing
This album and The Artist in the Ambulance are my favorite Thrice albums.
Mine too!!
One My Favorite songs to listen to while im driving through the mountains.
Did that today driving up lookout mountain in Chattanooga!
one of my all time favourite songs. God I L O V E Thrice!!!
So glad I started listening to this band again they NEVER disappoint me and have so much range. One of the best bands of my generation for sure,
Very good song
One of the best songs ever.
The land that ive been longing for as live where there will be no pain or tears anymore, is more than likely heaven. Atleast it makes perfect sense according to the bible. Plus the fact that he says theres no point in putting roots to deep when hes going to move on anyway, makes me think he believe that after this short life is over hes going there.
Im not trying to debate, i answered just incase you were really curious.
Still so glad I was born into the era of Thrice, all of us are truly lucky not to have been born in the 2000's where the media is saturated by generic edm and pop artists. Artists with talent are slowly dying out (career-wise), and while there is merit in the uniqueness of electronic music, there are few tracks that have a beautiful mix of timbre and meaning. A mixture that gives us the chills, built by talented musicians like those in Thrice. Thanks guys, you've made my life that much richer!
Hope they`ll get back together one day ... miss them a lot!
yeah it is!
This song rocks. Good stuff, first time I've heard them. :-)
seeing how society lives these days I'd rather be in exile -
This is totally badass! I'm just wondering how I got here from these guys. watch?v=m7ZFnZapzKk
the whole song
This song is about the NFL
There seems to be a debate here about the lyrics. Are these lyrics religious? Why?
The whole song or any specific lines?
Lol what?
This song is about:
(Philippians 3:20 ESV) But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
(Revelation 21:5-6 ESV) And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." 6 And he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
YOU GUISE. THIS SONG IS ABOUT DRIZZT DO'URDEN
I love this song so much that I have tatooed it's lyrics in my skin
Agreed! They really did change my life and how I think... Feels so empty knowing they are still not back yet. I really hope they come back soon!
JEBUS SABE ME
love em too. but music doesn't change your life, it's upto you
Punk..Punkcore..Metalcore....rockabilly/folk? The evolution.
I can't stop laughing.
this would be good in a zombie movie.
i am shaking from so much awesome in a 3:54 long song.
I went to high school with Dustin and Teppea used to skate with Teppea back in the day off my friends block. He was bad ass on the skateboard too... Glad he picked up the guitar though. Irvine produced some talent!
I miss Thrice so much that it gives me feels.
I wonder how many people go there just because of Dustin.
The Drummer is a Male just like Me!!.
unfortunately people get so caught up in whats wrong and right we end up appearing judgemental and forget about loving one another because Christ loves us. im a christian and one of my closest friends are athiest. just to make a point. ALSO, we became friends through Thrice.
I typically preach my hatred toward most organized religions. I have Thrice tattooed on my leg. I feel ya brother.
<3 1 of my favs
oh my god WHY does everyone have 69 in their name?? youre obviously never getting laid
Yes! hahahaha
Christian
Tap Tap Revenge Tour...
when this came out I hated it. I thought Thrice let me down. I grew up and I love it now. :)
what type of church they attend? I mean what religion?
