Thomas Dolby - I Love You Goodbye Lyrics

I would never normally go bowling
On a Friday morning in New Orleans
But I like to come here to remember
The kind of places you took me
Like the time we stole a Datsun
And drove all night to the Everglades
Until we crashed it in a big electric storm
And stood there listening to the bayou rain

The county sheriff had a harelip
Louisiana's pride and joy
He said politely as he cuffed me
"I never busted an English boy
But I will accept a contribution
To the Opelousas' Charity Ball
But you better drive this dirty Datsun
Into the Gulf of Mexico"

Under a Cajun moon I lay me open
There is a spirit here that won't be broken
Some words are sad to sing
Some leave me tongue-tied
(But the hardest thing to tell you)
But the hardest words I know
Are I love you goodbye
I love you goodbye

Typhoon Pierre delayed my plane till morning (Jusqu'au matin)
Let the bontemps rouler from your accordion (L'accordien)
Under a cajun moon I lay me open (Y'a un esprit partout)
There is a spirit here that won't be broken

(Simple words are sad to sing)
Some words are sad to sing
(They leave me tongue-tied)
Some leave you tongue-tied
(But the hardest thing to tell you my friend)
The hardest words I know
(Is I love you goodbye)
I love you goodbye
(Je t'aime, au revoir)
I love you goodbye
(Je t'aime, toujours)
I love you, goodbye

Thomas Dolby I Love You Goodbye Comments
  1. Laura L. Enright

Such a great song. My brother died in 1997 and I remember driving to work one morning days after with this song playing. Needless to say, what resonates the most is, "I love you, goodbye." Still cuts me open a bit 20 years later. But it's so beautiful.

  2. colinone12

For me his best ...stolen from Bruce Hornby but still .

  3. Pancho308

This one of my all time favorite songs...

  4. Raymond Abella

Oh damn, not sure, but for a minute there, I thought the guy playing the fiddle might be Michael Doucet from the Cajun band, BeauSoleil!

  5. lotusalivelight24

No such thing, as a ‘dirty datsun,’ btw🐳

  6. Christendom Defender

    ⏰ TIMING IS EVERYTHING 🔨

  7. e m

btw - the fiddler is michael doucet from the great cajun band, beausoleil.

  8. e m

the bowling alley he speaks of must be "mid-city lanes rock 'n bowl" on carrollton.
he's english, so i'll forgive him mispronouncing Opelousas, calling a parish a "county", the swamps the "everglades" and a hurricane a "typhoon".

    Rita S Lyons

Poetic license. The syllables had to fit.

  9. The wonder

Allstar lineup of musicians on this awesome CD... Michael Doucet, Jerry Garcia... one of my faves...

    what it brings back...

Never had chance to say goodbye.. Janet Lacy my hero, my rock, my Mother xxx

  13. John MacDonald

Tommy got some Bayou Tang and lived to sing about it

  14. fred linne

    beautiful love gone bad song...

    E Trent

Heard this for the first time in years just now... and some songs just hit you on a completely different level, depending on the circumstances in your life at that moment. This is one of them.

  15. Mark

Beautiful song. The end (5:40 - 5:57) gets me every time.

  16. thevarinator

This is perhaps Dolby's masterpiece among many. It is a song that I hear a new story from the music each time I listen. It puts you you in the picture starting from "you better drive that dirty Datsun into the Gulf of Mexico". What I don't like about this song, is that you can't send it to anyone or they think you are ditching them ....or yourself. Beautiful piece of matching lyric with instrumentals accurately. They tell each other's story...together ..or apart.

  17. John Williams

I've always adored this song! ❤

  18. Joachim Kane

atmospheric, enchanting, lil' dangerous, n'est pas? Very musical, intelligent lyrics... lovely mish-mash of a tune that will be forever a favorite for those of us blessed with good taste. Well done, TD.

  19. Andrew Boush

For 20 years I listened to this song and imagined the story it told, but I never saw the video until today. Thank you so much!

  20. George Bolger

    Classic

  21. Steffianna Baker

I love this song. Skated in a competition to it a long time ago. Great video. That's Kathleen Beller, his wife, with the long dark hair. Also known as Kirby on Dynasty!

  22. Amber Betts

one of my favorite songs of all time. seriously thank you to the very underrated Thomas Dolby!

  23. Alabama BizBooster

the drumstick against the rim sound ruins this for me.

  24. Eugene Morice

I would never normally go bowling...on a Friday morning in New Orleans...Whaaaat? Brilliant quirky, opening lyrics! !!

  25. RobertM

Is that Kathleen Beller in the video? Sure looks like her. Went to high school with her in New York. Not that she would know me if I tripped over her. Knew her father a bit as he was a math teacher in same HS. Just curious.

    G Morris

Yes, TD has been married to Kathleen Beller for years. Small world (but you wouldn't want to paint it).

  26. Jody Piper

I used to listen to this on repeat back in 1992-93 when I was 19 years old, poring over the classifieds of the Times-Picayune I had shipped from Louisiana to California, fantasizing about living in New Orleans – it never occurred to me how much was wrong with this song (Louisiana doesn't have Everglades, county sheriffs or typhoons) and it wouldn't have mattered anyway. It was the soundtrack to my daydreams back in the days when I had far more dreams than common sense.

  27. TJ Nugent

This is my favorite Dolby work. Every song is good. Very hard to do.

  28. 2020 Storage mg

Dolby genius and a timeless song.

  29. John Williams

Can someone please tell me why I cannot watch this video. "This video is not available" always displays in the window where it should play.

  30. John Williams

Could someone please please please tell me, why I can no longer see this video...? In fact, I don't think it's been available to watch on Youtube for over 2 years now. I think this song is Thomas's finest moment.

  32. James Scarry

    Another song that haunts me.

  33. lespaulfanofsparta

FUN FACT:  In his autobiography he sort of alleges the Backstreet Boys nicked the chorus of I Want It That Way from this song.  I don't really hear it until the end.  And then I definitely hear it.  Meanwhile I allege he nicked that piano solo from Bruce Hornsby.  LOL

    Dobby Dazzler

lespaulfanofsparta Unless I am mistaken that IS Bruce Hornsby playing those distinctive piano breaks including the lead piano solo....

    Scuppun

Clinton McRobert ... no it's TD. It's believed TD inspired Hornsby on The Way It Is. Who really knows????

    Dobby Dazzler

Scuppun oh yes, that sounds right. I knew there was a strong Hornsby connection there anyway. Both brilliant, but TD provided much of the soundtrack of my life during many many dark years. He is just wonderful.....

    DISCOGOTHTHEJAZZFAN

... And the bassline from Thriller! laugh (I came here from the autobiography, too)

  34. Rohan M 23

In 2017 first i saw this song in video. Before this i have been listening to it since 2015 but never got to see the video. OMG i never knew that this song was so lovely . Really loved this song . When i saw the start of this song i got pet shop boys song heart in my mind. Really i am so luck that i am a 90's kid. Now 27 . But still enjoy listening 80's and 90's songs. Love u 80's and 90's. Thanks for uploading it.

  35. Fran Cano

    Great!!!

  36. BluePedal

Notice the cross that is in a lot of the shots in this video. Love this video's overall look. The song is magical.

One of my favorite Dolby songs.

  40. Kent Taylor

    so underated love it

  41. D Cowart

I love the New Orleans vibe, only been there twice, but I have been attracted to the region forever. Cajun, Zydeco those women oh my god - beautiful. This song captures all that for me.

  42. Chris Rorer

thank you yes Thomas Dolby had more hits than she blinded me with science. its a shame most people dont know it

  43. Robert Wright

    Absolute perfection!

  44. Archepytus

There is a spirit here that won't be broken.

  45. Steve Cabrera

I believe his love interest in this video is actually his wife, actress Kathleen Beller. Some of you older types may remember her as Kirby in Dynasty (1982-1984). I was living in New Orleans during that time and my girlfriend used to kick me out of the house for her "Dynasty parties" with her girl friends.

    JOHN WILLIAMS

    That sure looks like her.

    Archepytus

That's what he say in his autobiography, The Speed of Sound.

  46. Dennis

A bit more enthusiasm please @0:38

  47. Saša Živković

I must agree with all this positive posts on this song (which is one of my fav, too) and TD in general, but "Budapest by blimp" is my real favorite.
Maybe because I live near Budapest and song has that feel like home for me, who knows...

  48. Gern Blensten

Dolby is a genius. And THAT BASS!!!!

  49. patcharisma

This Song (from 1992) must be the prettiest, Thomas Dolby ever did....
    (Pat, Switzerland9

  50. Oscar Arias

only 28k views for such a masterpiece, would anybody care to tell me where tomorrows musicians will get their inspiration from, oh yeah maybe from the current top 40, yikes!

    Saša Živković

By the time I'm writing this it's 32k but nevertheless what I wish to say is that it never came to my mind to search for this video (or any other TD video) because I'm so bonded to his music and not for video presentation of it. This is specially true for some other songs like "Budapest by blimp" and few others. They all have some other kind of "video" for me...

  51. ladycplum

    Damnit Thomas, you mispronounced Opelousas!

    SD Boy

Me too....never knew there is actually a place called Opelousas, Louisiana....

    ladycplum

@Arthur Medrano Like most places around here, if you're not from Louisiana, chances are you'll have a hard time pronouncing them right. We're weird that way.

    SD Boy

+ladycplum Yeah, I have good friends from Lousiana...have learned that even Texans have problems with understanding it. lol

    JOHN WILLIAMS

He mispronounced OPP-UH-LOOSE-UHS and NEW OR-LEE-UNS, he mentioned counties instead of parishes and he mentioned driving through the Everglades (which is in Florida). But hey, props to the "English boy" for trying. He even mentioned Rock-N-Bowl on the slick ("I would never normally go bowling on a Friday morning in New Orleans").

    #forgiven
    #Dolyisawesome

    Skut BoardSports

I think his geography is just fine. It would take all night to drive from Nawlins to the Everglades. He never said they were in the same state.

  52. Roberto Reflexive

The Man and his legendary music! Amazing output, following his music right from the start, always top tier work :-)

  53. Bfdidc

Brilliant and unjustly forgotten song and video. Thanks for posting.

  54. Sarah Reinbolt

    since HS... his sound resonates.

  55. col-t-walters

Thomas Dolby great 30 years ago when i first heard him and he has still got it man thanks for the clip

  56. beau cloer

    Great song

  57. Gerry Clemons

Have always loved this song and have always wanted to meet Thomas Dolby to give him a US geography lesson. He has a great feel for Louisiana. I can understand how the typical Brit would not no any better but I would have expected TD to know the the Everglades were nowhere near Louisiana. Call me anal but I'm a native north Floridian.

    dutraentertainment

+Gerry Clemons No, he drove all night TO the everglades, right?

    tiptoeburgIar

It should also be noted that there aren't any "county sheriffs" in Louisiana. They're "parish sheriffs".

    Saša Živković

+dutraentertainment: Absolutely right. I don't think TD would allow himself such mistake.

    Braun Haus Media, LLC

The story was written from the point of view of an "english boy." If taken in that context, the mistakes fit the character in the song. He's a guy out of his element.

    LisaMW

Poetry doesn't need to be lyrically accurate. :) You're missing the beauty of the words and how he puts them together.

  58. Gabmiggy

There is something very interesting, nostalgic and mystic about this Thomas Dolby's song. Some ''Je ne sais quoi...'' but I agree with ''laisse-le bon temps rouler!'' I can listen and listen this song over and over. Best!

    wareling

Gabmiggy 👌absolutely agree....takes me away to a time gone by and makes me so nostalgic

    jessie72176

I can also. The song is very relaxing, love the harmony

  59. Sheila Elliott

    Beyond Brillant!

    Erin Walter

    Agreed.

  60. maha77

flawless. amazing. melodic. beautiful. haunting. simply love this song and so much of dolby's music

  61. John O'Dell

as someone who has been messing with synths etc for 20plus years, Thomas Dolby is one of my demi gods....I remember reading about him in an early keyboard magazine where he travelled a great distance JUST to sample real crickets ( the ones in "MULU" I believe.....his skills are amazing....so many great sounds he has brought to our ears.

  62. composerdave68

Although I do really like this song, there are no counties in Louisiana, therefore no County Sheriffs...

    composerdave68

And they would never use the word Typhoon... it's a Hurricane.

  63. SomeOneElse

A spirit here that won't be broken. Yes !
I pray for Katrina victims, to this day.

    SomeOneElse

    And again today 8 12 16

    JOHN WILLIAMS

As a survivor (I'm not claiming victim), I thank you. :-)

  64. Robin Andersen

I love this song....absolutely love it...seems to me that the video is different from what I remember but maybe I am just forgetful...

  65. Erik Surbaugh

To Ryan: You'd better drive that dirty Datsun....

beautiful song. People ask what my favorite song is. I almost always come back to this one.

  77. mbluetyphoon

From such a wonderful song, I am so sad to hear about your brother. This video looks like it was lot of fun to be in, play music in, and be involved in.
I hope that your brother had alot of fun being in this video.

  78. mbluetyphoon

I am such a latecomer to this song... This song is absolutely beautiful!!!

It does remind me of Bruce Hornsby's "That's The Way It Is" and "A Love Bizarre" by Sheila E. and Prince.

Thank you, Thomas! I love this song so much!..

  79. luna reed

  92. James A MacAlister

Such a curious mix of Thomas Dolby and the Bayou. I never grow tired of it.

  93. Ben Culture

Really beautiful song; thanks for posting it.
I had never thought to check out Thomas Dolby, but today I decided to look for "Hyperactive" because I literally hadn't heard it since it was in heavy rotation on MTV (meanwhile, every frickin' "80s retro" radio program ALWAYS includes "...Science", and we're all sick to death of the song by now). After that, I saw a link to this video, and I was just drawn to the title. I really didn't expect such a . . . *pretty* song. It's great!

  94. tgear77

Please keep this one up. I keep adding this video to my favorites and then finding it deleted the next time I want to play it.
