Thomas Dolby - Blue Is A River Lyrics

Blue remembers
Blue like a planet to a spaceman
Blue river of my tears

Like the heather on the hillside
As they drove us from the highlands
Like the iceflow from the Arctic
Where we landed in Newfoundland
There's a colour to my sorrow
There's a name for all this sadness
Like the ocean in between us
I am blue

Blue is a river
Blue remembers
Blue water running clear
Blue like a planet to a spaceman
Blue river of my tears

So I came here to the city
Where the dream burns like a furness
And I dazzled in these dark streets
Like a diamond in a coalface
Till the cold wind from the islands
Blew a storm cloud across the new moon
Like the gunsmoke above the houses
In my home

Blue is a river
Blue remembers
Blue water running clear
Blue like a planet to a spaceman
Blue river of my tears
Blue river of my tears

Thomas Dolby Blue Is A River Comments

The lyrics by Dolby lead into MacMasters fiddle playing. Anyone who knows about the sparsely settled and longest settled part of North America, Atlantic Canda, will appreciate this.

When you know what Cape Breton music is, you know it's not boring. It's beautiful. They did a fantastic job. Can't express - and dancing too! Wow!

  3. W.... O....

Is he using some kind of phoney vocal harmonizer bullshit thing?  Sounds just awful.  If I were here would have walked off stage.

  4. M.... J....

    what tune is this?

  5. I.... G....

I'm with you, Doug. There's a lack of fit between the two bits....even though both are great.

  6. D.... P....

each one to his own i suppose, but it's the 1st 1/2 i like best...great harmonising & slow fiddle.. with a difference !!

  7. D.... P....

    lovely !!!

  8. G.... ....

Absolutely wonderful fiddle playing. The best part definitely starts from 5:25, skip right to it, as the music from the on gets incredible!!

Christ! I thought she was going to poke an eye out when she really got going! That or kick TD's keyboard over!

Natalie Macmaster & Thomas Dolby - Great together.

the vocal layering gave it a very haunting tone that one just has to ponder. though there are parts where the technology's flaws shine through

A Dolby se le cae el teclado y suena bien...
grande la chica de Nueva Escocia también!!
Desde Chile saludos master Thomas thanks for your music

The brilliant thing about TD is that he doesn't see the need of pigeon-holing music. Does this tune work? For some yes, for others, no. Does it matter? Not really. The point is, enjoy what each has to offer and the true value in it will shine. Some of the best music I've heard is slow and plaintive. In my mind, that's what's happening in the first part of this tune. The rest is like the awakening of hope. It is new; it is fresh; it is good. Cheerio

Natalie is so brilliant, and to think, Thomas Dolby has his own thing going...but their styles are like water and oil, that voicing is like, what the? huh!?

  20. W.... ....

wishing i could step dance now...

  21. B.... K....

Simply beautiful and amazing!! Thanks for sharing.

  22. M.... D....

Yes, indeed it's a pity the vocals weren't up to scratch as the song is beautiful - of course the fiddle's there as always

  23. c.... ....

I think the vocal layers are pretty cool. Could be a bit crisper maybe. Isn't this a bit like Imogen Heap?
