Forgot all about this song for years but now that I've replayed it, it sounds incredible!
Love all the early Thin Lizzy stuff and looking forward to re-discovering it all again. RIP Philo ...... poet, singer, musician, genius. Thank you for your legacy man!

  5. N.... H....

    Lindo tema

  6. j.... b....

Yes this is one of my favorite of all my favorate songs by Phil and the Thin Lizzy boys, This is nothing less than totally brilliant, excellent words by the poet, top rate playing by all the lads, this tune has not aged a moment from the very first time I heard it all those years ago. It is crazy that you can have been listening to a song for 40 years and all of a sudden you hear something that you had not picked up on before, this happened to be a few years ago when driving along listening to this song, I recall hearing Eric saying many years ago that he admired Hank Marvin of the Shadows, and this you can hear on Eric beautiful guitar playing in this song

  7. J.... C....

    Truly fab pics

  8. l.... ....

love lizzy and phl but i find the arrangements and the instrumentation (is there an orchestra there?) almost unlistenable

    l.... ....

This is one of only two Thin Lizzy songs (the other being Shades of a Blue Orphanage) that featured a Mellotron .

  9. R.... M....

He liked to project an image of toughness but underneath that veneer was a true Romantic and a Poet.

  10. J.... N....

Phil was a genius with lyrics. This is one of my favorite songs from my favorite band of all time.

  11. j.... m....

Thin lizzy - the honesty is no excuse

Up till now I used to pass my time
Drinking beer so slowly, sometimes wine
No God, air, water or sunshine
And honesty was my only excuse
I took your love and I used it

Up till now my youthful stage
A useless rage, a torn out page, a worn out gauge
A dirty shade, a big charade, a has been made
And honesty was my only excuse
I took your love and I used it

    I never, I never, I never

Up till now my love life
Few sweet kisses, a little missus, a fork and knife
A happy home, a hand to hold, a land to roam
And honesty was my only excuse
I used to take life in my own hands and I abused it

Up till now I used to tap dance
Take a girl by the hand saying
"I need your, I need your romance"
Oh I had me many chances
And honesty was my only excuse
I used to take your love and I'd abused it

Up till now the path of life was fair enough
Enough was fair, all was right
And now I know, I see the light
And honesty was my only excuse

  12. j.... b....

This is a total brilliant song this has not aged 1 single day since it was first heard by the greatest band that ever existed with the words of the Master Phil Lynott, God bless all those boys with very special gifts

  13. c.... ....

    A heartbreaker.

  14. j.... h....

    Beautiful !!!

  15. A.... O....

    Diamantes
    They..are.forever

  16. A.... L....

Prob the best string section every

  17. A.... L....

What a great song this is. My favorite from the first album

  18. J.... T....

That man wrote some truly fantastic songs. Brilliant.

  19. j.... b....

how sweet in this song from the rocking Phil, Eric and Brian, it is a brillint tune. the magical words of the master wordsmith of Phil the man himself. If you listen you can hear some of Hank Marvin of the shadows guitar style, Brian did say that he was influenced by 6he very might Hank Marvin

  20. j.... b....

Is this not the greatest song by Phil and his boys. No, it is another might brilliant meaningful colossal song, right up there with the very best but then again all Thin Lizzy songs are top notch tunes that will live on and and on way into the future of mankind

I have no problem the hero the might Phil Lynott and all his boys in the very great Thin Lizzy band plus their brilliant artist Jim Fitzpatrick. Phil, his boys and their music comes to my mind several times each day and from the very beginning. Phil invaded my mind from the very first and has refused to go away. He has stuck to me like glue and will not let go, if he told me he was going to go away, I would refuse him permission go so it looks like we will be stuck together for the remainder of time and I would not have it any other way. it is my story and i am stick to it

  24. M.... M....

I think the Eric Bell years were fantastic. Second best guitarist they ever had, after Gary. Even Shades has a number of really good tracks. Thanks for posting this. Always loved this song.

  43. O.... ....

    love the bass

  44. S.... M....

I went back to listen to Thin Lizzy to see if I had missed any great music from the early 70's and found this song. Honestly most of Thin Lizzy's dueling guitars doesn't move me to much, but the first 3 songs from this album ending with this song is utterly sublime. If they had followed in these first steps i would be a walking talking Thin Lizzy fanatic and going door to door to bring their majesty to all the land. Like Otis Redding mixed with Dylan.

  45. R.... O....

This is simple awesome great instrumental , Phil voice is the best in trhe world until now.

  46. M.... S....

    no dislikes !!! ......great solo.

My all time favorite Thin Lizzy song. Not their best album, but this song is absolutely spectacular! RIP Phil. How I wish I could have seen you live.

  53. v.... s....

    James Hetfield's favorite song ;D

  54. N.... ....

One of my favourite songs as well, from the very first second when I heard it. Divine music! Phil was a genius! By the way, I DO love "Shades of a Blue Orphanage"!

  55. Y.... ....

@metamorphosis67 agree 100% - although I can´t pick a definite favorite - too many great songs on their debut :-)

  56. G.... T....

my favorite song from this album!

  57. k.... b....

One of my favorite Lizzy songs. As I watch this and listen to the great words of Phil Lynott, the tears come easy. I was 9 years old when I heard The Boys are Back In Town. I have been into many bands over the past 44 years of my life but only once have I ever gotten a tribute tattoo to one of them. That tatto was to the "Wild One" himself, Philip Parris Lynott. RIP Phil. I miss your words and music everyday. \m/ \m/

  58. A.... I....

    MISS YOU

  59. M.... S....

Eric bell was such a great player !

  63. P.... ....

He is everything to me,i thank my bro Tommy for bein the image of Philo ,I was six when Philo died, still have a private cry every January in homage. Gettin married next year to my dream man, but at what point do i play this favourite song of mine?

  64. m.... ....

I don't care what anybody says. The first Thin Lizzy album is their rawest, most soulful, most jamming & greatest. And this is the best song off that album & by extentsion, the ultimate song in the entire Thin Lizzy catalogue.

    m.... ....

    Definitely not.

  65. I.... D....

This may be my favorite Thin Lizzy song ever...Eric Bell was such an underrated guitar player...and they generated so many great, inspiring guitar players, each with their own identity and style, but I think a lot of folks overlook the first 3 albums too often...classic tune, ty so much for posting...

  66. N.... T....

This song brings back back memories for me that i haven't even had yet. And it makes me sad because i never got to actually be with the decade of kids i know i belong with. i'm 16.

  67. S.... C....

nice hint of soul in this tune...what a song!!

  68. J.... S....

  72. a.... ....

I saw this fella half a dozen times in the 70's...Had all his LP's ...still have them. All my mates were into Quo and Queen..they didn't see Lizzy.
No one else makes me sad to see and hear them...Phil was a total genius.Sarah..my only daughter was named you know why.The man was before his time.A poet that sang the words.I keep coming back to Phil Lynott.

  73. p.... ....

I love this!!!! This is one of my favorite songs period. It's a shame that the band's first 3 albums are often overlooked. I think they showcase Phil's talent even more than the later records partly because he was so young and already so good. I mean he was probably 21 or 22 when he wrote this song, right? Can you imagine being so young and writing lyrics like this? Amazing. Great video, great pics, great sound. Thanks!
