I think of a victim of an attempted murder or kidnapped/torture victim who had just been saved would sound like this, especially the hoarse sounding one, because the person would probably been screaming. They would be trying to piece things together, but not enough to be very coherent. Just random bits and pieces of conversation before the incident.

Here’s my take on the song:

The term “stalking horse” means to hide your true intensions behind a false pretext. Hunters used to use wooden screens in the shape of horses (stalking horses) to keep their hunt unaware of them. He even says the stalking horse “hides the guy”. When he says “in which the pony was a phony was a lie” he’s talking about how the person’s intentions turned out to be fake, a lie. “The bag which you drag behind your car”, relates to the stalking horse in the manor that whatever is actually “in the bag” is being concealed and dragged behind the car, in order to hide it from people.

Now I have two main theories:

1. I believe whoever the man is singing to his something from him and lied to him about it while keeping up a facade ( in a sense gaslighting him). When he finds out he is at first confused, but then it becomes not much of a surprise. He tried to make sense of the person’s logic, but ends up telling them to leave him alone.

2. He is talking to himself, is inner demons and thoughts. He might be trying to lie to himself, trying to make sense of what he’s done ( in which he feels guilty about). One part of him says it was a catastrophe, while the other part says it felt good. This could be why the song is nonsensical, it’s the the thoughts of someone racking their brain, not making sense of their own feelings. The second voice that chimes in could be his other half trying to make sense of his guilty half.

Hope this helps and makes at least a little bit of sense :) this is in no way official, just my opinion
