They Might Be Giants - The End Of The Tour Lyrics
There's a girl with a crown and a scepter
Who's on WLSD
And she says that the scene isn't what it's been
And she's thinking of going home
That it's old and it's totally over now
And it's over, it's over, it's over now
I can see myself
At the end of the tour
When the road disappears
If there's any more people around
When the tour runs aground
And if you're still around
Then we'll meet at the end of the tour
The engagements are booked through the end of the world
Never to part since the day we met
Out on Interstate 91
I was bent metal you were a flaming wreck
When we kissed at the overpass
I was sailing along with the people
Driving themselves to distraction inside me
Then came a knock on the door which was odd
And the picture abruptly changed
At the end of the tour
When the road disappears
If there's any more people around
When the tour runs aground
And if you're still around
Then we'll meet at the end of the tour
The engagements are booked through the end of the world
So we'll meet at the end of the tour
This was the vehicle these were the people
You opened the door and expelled all the people
This was the vehicle these were the people
You opened the door and expelled all the people
This was the vehicle these were the people
You let them go
At the end of the tour
When the road disappears
If there's any more people around
When the tour runs aground
And if you're still around
Then we'll meet at the end of the tour
The engagements are booked through the end of the world
So we'll meet at the end of the tour
And we're never gonna tour again
No, we're never gonna tour again

They Might Be Giants The End Of The Tour Comments
When I was younger, when this album first came out, I thought this song meant TMBG were calling it a day. I was sad. Then they released Factory Showroom and I was no longer sad :)
The first time I saw TMBG live was in support of this album, so it has a special place in my heart. Also, Black Francis opened up for them. How lucky was I?
I'm in a mood and this song sums it up. thank you guys I needed this.
We'll meet at the end of the tour...

This song fucking ROCKS!
this music is usng during the time of cartoon planet in tbs and cartoon network too
very fitting end to the album
For fun, play Linnell's House Of Mayors directly into this track. Best segue ever.
Thank you for this.
Such a good song
Thanks Rian Johnson
this reminds me of "House at the top of the Tree"
love this
I'd just like to point out that this song is just after Stomp Box in the album.
4 peoples' tours have not ended.
I thought the slogan for the radio station WLSD was "Your Hallucination Station!" It's one of those rarefied stations that you can only pick up through the alien transceivers in your fillings.
I've figured it out!
It's a car crash song...
BUT IT'S FROM THE VIEW OF THE CAR!
"Driving themselves to Distraction inside me" is what lead me to this theory.
"Never to part since the day we met
Out on Interstate 91
I was bent metal you were a flaming wreck
When we kissed at the overpass"
It took me over twenty years to realize this. (Some of their songs are so surreal, I just figured, well....)
The intercity or charter bus sideswiped the band's tour bus from the right side while going under an underpass. At this point, the tour bus fell in love. Apparently, there was some damage, since the tour bus was bent metal and the charter bus was a flaming wreck. Although perhaps this was figurative, since no injuries are reported and the charter bus passenegers dismounted to wait for a replacement bus. And the band members themselves were driving themselves to distraction as they usualy did.
I was astounded to realize that all this
is in the song.
Um...I don't think think there was a replacement bus in this fantasy. The singer in the first verse wants to go home- "the scene isn't what it's been and she's (the girl) thinking of going home....and it's old and it's over", etc..
So that girl with the crown and scepter....well the Johns could see her (the only girl with crown and scepter I know of ) every day if they walked down to the Brooklyn waterfront near where they lived (Williamsburg & vicinity). That's the Statue of Liberty of course; it represents freedom/liberty, makes perfect sense that she's kind of calling them home to NYC.
When the song was written (1994) things had already soured between TMBG and Elektra. I think they went their separate ways in 1995. And interestingly, things came to a head when Elektra tried to add an additional date to...yes...The Tour...in Japan, and the Johns refused to do it.
So, the band wasn't too thrilled with having to do these tours, and, as I understand it from watching the documentaries on TMBG, the tours weren't making any money either at this point. So, I think, in the fantasy of "bent metal, meet flaming wreck", "you let them go" means....for good.
Dude, I've said this for years. It's about a tour bus that falls in love with another tour bus when they get in an accident. That's so TMBG
All time favorite TMBG song
"The End Of The Tour" is an absolute masterpiece.

At the last TMBG show I went to, Linnell said it's about a band who is getting older and keep saying that this is their last tour, but then never really retire. He compared this song to the longevity of The Rolling Stones.

Do you have a comment on ever tmbg video on youtube?
You're one to talk about having comments on every TMBG videos, Steevious.
8 now bitch
that's really healthy and reasonable man
You are going to hit their cars with yours while playing this song at full volume?
Maybe they will use this song in the new movie coming out of the same name. The trailer has some R.E.M. song on it tho, go figure.
Maybe WLSD is Withdrawal LSD
Name of a radio station according to the TMBG wiki
LSD has no addictive qualities and causes no withdrawal symptoms.
He's talking about tour so obviously he is making a pun about or a reference to LSD. Using the W to make it sound like a station.
Its an actual radio station for christian music
Everything is a Christian station now. The goddamned Mormons, 700 Club, and New Life Evangelists are buying every goddamned FM slot that isn't currently being used. I miss the days when Christian Radio was contained to AM radio.
This song is about a drunk driver who kills a young girl in a crash
@Edgar Allan shakespeare That is a very interesting interpretation that I had not heard before. I had internalized a detailed story about this song being about a fatal crash that they passed in their van after playing a show (in Western Massachusetts, I believe), and later learning that the occupants of the vehicle had been in attendance at said show (this isn't referenced in the song, but is rather the impetus for writing the song). However, I can turn up no evidence of that story with cursory searching, and I can't remember where I heard it (it's been a rather long time). The fact that Interstate 91 runs through Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont kind of argues against a reference to folks from the Pacific Northwest, but I suppose it could be that they were traveling on 91 when they heard about Cobain...
@zhvugnah One of the Johns went to UMass Amherst for a while - Rt 91 is right over the river in Northampton. Local legend actually places the bridge referenced in "Ana Ng" as the old railroad bridge that parallels the Rt 9 bridge over the Connecticut River.
I always thought it was about They Might Be Giants' own inevitable breakup.
The way the girl with the crown and the scepter feels about the music scene is the way the band will one day feel about itself. The car crash is John and John's tight-knit partnership--the two changed each others' lives drastically and have since become inseparable. The Tour itself is They Might Be Giants' career. In particular, the line "The engagements are booked 'till the end of the world, so we'll meet at the end of the tour," comes of to me as them saying "We'll still be around, possibly for a long, long time, but one day, it's gonna have to end."
It's a really sad song, no matter how you spin it...
Interstate 91 runs through Vermont.
I read "Interstate 91" as 1991. and "the day we met" as when American pop culture recognized their hit song, Birdhouse. They "were scared" and the public (their needy fans) were "a flaming wreck", when they came together (kissed at the overpass)
..... 1991.
CTY YOU HAVE A NICE BUTT
cty we love you
@Ariel Uy CTY I'LL LOVE YOU 4EVER!!!!!!!!
I purely came here to look for cty people, and i found some. LAN.2
CTY WE LOVE YOU, came here with pctyd (just finished nevermore year)
this songs is clearly about Jerry Garcia death...........
I don't get paid anything. At all. The adverts aren't my doing. I just upload them 'cause I like the band, and other people do too.
Maybe because you upload it with adverts, meaning you get paid to put their music on your page? Just a thought.
A lot of TMBG fans dislike John Henry. I maintain that it was one of their better albums. This song... can't explain how powerful it feels. If I could choose a song for ending credits to an amazing story, this would be it.
i have bought this album on cd more than once over the years, so i own it. sniff it!
I was sad the day I found this last track skipping in my CD player and I hadn't the money to buy another one. Happy again now that I can hear one of my favourite TMBG songs. Thanks
Dude. Exact same reason why I'm here. Crazy.
WLSD is also the name of a Southern Gospel and Religious radio station, so you're right (juskiddinplzdunsueme)
Guys, TMBG's music group don't like me putting TMBG's songs up! If I get one more strike, then I'm off here! Tell the Johns, spread the word! I don't wanna go. Not again.

One "dislike"? someone must be on WLSD...
THIS SONG GIVES ME ALL THE FEELS
This was my first TMBG album, at age 13. Blew my mind to the back of my bedroom. Hooked for life ever since.
It is probably the most profound moment in Gigantic when Michael McKean does a reading of these lyrics.
I started listening to TMBG when Lincoln came out, but end of the tour has to be one of my top 2 favorite songs of their's.
This is on my little 512Mb mp3 player, and i listen to it almost daily. (i have a little one cuz i lose things, so buying small expensive mp3 players isn't good for me)
My sister had this cd when I was in 5th grade I used to listen to it all the time haha!
One of the Many TMBG best!
this song deserves THOUSANDS of views!! brings back so many memories...
